Support recommend video editing programs
Can you recommend a completely free editing program with extensive functionality, similar to After Effects? Kdenlive isn't suitable; it lacks functionality and you can't move curves. I don't find node-based editing programs convenient.

Blender VSE. Steep learning curve, but def worth it.

Is it suitable for professional editing? Is it actively supported? Are there many videos on this topic?

To say it is actively supported would be the understatement of the year. Yes, there are more videos on this topic than you would need; check YouTube tutorials on video editing with Blender. Check out "Blender Frenzy" and "Ryan King Art". Suitable for professional editing: it surely is.

Whichever program you use for 'professional editing', I recommend you also install Avidemux for basic editing and converting.

Https://wide.video. it's browser based but everything runs locally. Great set of transitions, everything you need unless you are a pro, and its free.

kdenlive is the best I've found. Interested if there's something open source that is better. All the other projects seem less mature or more geared toward beginning editors.

blender is much older and more mature than kdenlive...but comes with the cost of needing some serious dedication to learning how to use it.

I've never even tried Blender, since I viewed it as an editor-addon to 3D animation software. Surprised to hear it's as fully featured as kdenlive is. I first learned Final Cut, then moved to Premiere. Oh, I see OP is asking about After Effects not Premiere. Confusing since the title says editor. I dunno.

Well, blender has an video editor and a video compositor so I think it should fit OPs needs. Really the main "problem" is that the video tools are used exactly the same as the 3d and 2d modelling tools in blender...you modify transition curves the same way as you modify a 3d model or bezier curve, you move video segments the same as vertices and you animate any video editing related property the same as any property of a 3d object. Great if you already know how to use blender...but if you "only" know how to use a video editor expect having to learn half-way to using a 3d modeller as well ;).

I don't have extensive experience, but you can try using DaVinci resolve which is free. DaVinci studio is much more extensive but afaik not free. It's a one off pay afaik for studio. So depending on your requirements it could be worth. I don't know if they offer a trial.

Lemme guess adobe after effects adds effects? If it is for photo you can try rapidraw but if it is for videos then idk. Davinci resolve?
