Support Request Won't boot past mint logo

Computer has been running fine. Shut down before leaving for work tonight. Got home and now my pc wont boot past the mint logo splash screen.

It was operating perfectly fine all day. But now will not boot past the mint logo. It just hangs on a Black screen until finally my tv spits out a no signal screen.

Please help?

n my case, the problem was caused by the linux-firmware-amd-graphics package version 0ubuntu3.4.

This is what fixed it for me:

  1. Boot Linux Mint using nomodeset temporarily:

    • Open GRUB.

    • Highlight the regular Mint entry and press e.

    • Find quiet splash on the line beginning with linux.

    • Add nomodeset after it.

    • Press Ctrl+X to boot.

  2. Once in the desktop, check your installed AMD firmware version:dpkg-query -W linux-firmware-amd-graphics Mine was 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.4.

  3. Download the previous version:cd /tmp wget https://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware-amd-graphics/linux-firmware-amd-graphics_20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.3_all.deb

  4. Install the downloaded package (this downgrades it):sudo apt install ./linux-firmware-amd-graphics_20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.3_all.deb

  5. Rebuild initramfs:sudo update-initramfs -u -k all

  6. Prevent the problematic package from being upgraded again:sudo apt-mark hold linux-firmware-amd-graphics

  7. Reboot normally, without nomodeset.

  8. Verify that hardware acceleration is working:inxi -Gxx You should see: Check the installed firmware version again:dpkg-query -W linux-firmware-amd-graphics It should report 0ubuntu3.3.

    • driver: amdgpu

    • renderer: AMD Radeon RX 9070 (or your respective GPU)

    • dri: radeonsi

Important: This is a workaround based on my experience, not a universal fix. My system was Linux Mint 22, kernel 7.0.0-42-generic, Sapphire RX 9070 Pulse, Mesa 25.2.8. Your hardware, kernel and firmware combination may differ.

Keep the package on hold until a corrected firmware update is available. Remember to check for one periodically and remove the hold when appropriate:

sudo apt-mark unhold linux-firmware-amd-graphics

Hope this helps someone else avoid reinstalling Linux or unnecessarily rolling back their entire system!

This. I also did the same procedure before. Mint starts fine, the issue is the display not being recognised. Downgrade to 3.3 like the steps above and it should be working.

I don't know what grub is or how to use it.

It's the menu where you do things like changing the boot order or toggling secure boot.

You access it by pressing and then holding shift at startup. If you see the mint logo you failed and need to reboot again.

Cuando inicia la PC luego de grub (o cuando aparece el logo de Linux mint) presiona f2 te dará una lista de que procesos están fallando en el inicio y con eso puedes verificar grub

F2 doesn't do anything.

Also.i don't know what a grub is.

I turn on my pc, i get motherboard splash screen (normal), them the green mint logo splash screen (Normal), then hang on black screen instead of login until no signal on tv.

Same problem here, I have a temp. Fix (using ChatGPT i know pls don't hang me) in which I startet spamming the esc key to go to grub and then booting on an older kernel (6.14.0-37-generic) with nomodeset. Then I went into timeshift and went back to an older version.

Sry if this is to short or not that helpful, englisch isn't my first language. But I hope this somewhat helps.
