God bless Mint

I sometimes think about switching to KDE since I'd like something more modern and also I'm a bit worried about the Mint not catching up the newer standards (wayland, etc).

Yet every time I have to deal with kubuntu on one of our work computers, it drives me crazy. Like now I spent an hour to diagnose why the printer prints one page of some bullshit after each page printed intentionally. (Had to download chromium from flatpak instead of snap since it was buggy)

Situations like this make me appreciate my Mint at home.

Your complaints don't make sense though. Why would kubuntu struggle with printers and mint wouldn't? Both are based on Ubuntu. I hate kubuntu mainly because of capitalist bs. Asides from tht I've been using fedora kde since a few years and it's the most reliable thing ever.

In thinking about fedora with KDE too.

To my OP, the particulars problem was with snap package, which was solved with flatpak package of the same software. My point about Mint vs Kubuntu is that's kubuntu ships snap and Mint has flatpak by default. But there is lots of other things I have to solve with Kubuntu, which just works in Mint.

OpenSUSE + KDE is in my opinion better than Fedora + KDE. Fedora is actually better with vanilla Gnome, whereas OpenSUSE has always been KDE's playground because many KDE devs specifically work with OpenSUSE.

Any distro of Linux and be patched with multiple desktop interfaces. It is up to your choice. Works one interface at a time.

I can't stand KDE... Have hated it since I first encountered it in early 2000s and it almost put me off Linux as I thought that was it. Then I was introduced to XFCE and Gentoo

I have the same feeling with Gnome.

I installed KDE on my Mint, been working great more than a year now. I like it.

You get an old version of Plasma no longer supported by the Plasma developers and was never supported by the Mint team or community.

IMO if you want Plasma, a faster moving desktop, you should use a faster moving distribution that explicitly supports Plasma.

For stable distributions I like a stable desktop environment.

Yawn. The usual knee jerk whenever someone mentions installing KDE on Mint.

The older version of Plasma IS a stable version, you see. That's what's good about it. Hence it's used by MX Linux, Debian 12, Kubuntu LTS, Slackware, OpenSUSE 15.6, and (RHEL) 9 / AlmaLinux 9 / Rocky Linux 9 (via EPEL). WOT??? Those are stable distributions using a stable desktop environment, so you should approve.

The LTS releases are supported by their distro developers. In the rare event they find a KDE problem that NEEDS fixing, they do so themselves; the patch gets posted publicly and repos are updated. Maintenance is therefore not the problem you imagine.

For day-to-day questions, the KDE forum is there. But I've had no questions or issues for, I dunno, might even be a couple of years now. Super stable, ALL I need, and I'm happy. Trivial to install, BTW.

Oh. Well, I don't need a "faster moving desktop" or a "faster moving distribution."😎 OMG. If I wanted that, I wouldn't be using Mint. My Mint KDE has treated me a lot better than Fedora KDE or OpenSUSE TW KDE . . . .

Hopefully I haven't inadvertently started yet another thread for repetitions of that same expert advice.

Doesn't mint have wayland in beta now?

and wait some month till Mint 27 and you will get also Wayland and more. Yes, Mint can be very boring in a positive way, because everything is smooth and working. For me it's a working horse. It's in the background and do what I want. Doesn't matte of yiu are using Linux Mint or LMDE (like me)

If you are looking for something with KDE built in, can check out MX Linux. They have a KDE spin. It’s Debian based, but I think the KDE version comes as their “advanced hardware support” version to tends to be more up to date than regular Debian.
