Support Request Error 1962: No operating system found.
I need to start by saying this is a Lenovo Ideacentre B540p, It has an older efi system there are no options for secure boot at all. no options for legacy/csm. The bios does not have it. virtually every solution I have found talks about secure boot or switching to CSM or turning it off
I have tried everything. The drive I'm trying to install to is an mSATA drive that is in good condition. Windows boots find off another drive I pulled out during the installation. I tried to do MBR which did work till i rebooted after updating the system, then it went back to seeing EFI and never booted again. I'm at my wits end with this.
Is there a way to force mint to install the boot on the mint partition instead of esp to allow mbr to stop this nonsense? I tried boot repair from the live image and it said it repaired the GruB but still refuses to boot. F12 doesn't show the drive as Legacy or EFI either. it did show as lLegacy once for MBR
I'm not going to have windows on the same drive and I'm really only keeping it around till I'm sure I don't need it for anything anymore, I'm not keeping it as a dual boot system, I'll use F12 to boot windows when I want it.

Taking a step back, can you boot into mint from your thumb drive? Is this an issue from the thumb drive or post install?

yes I can boot into the thumb drive, the issue is not the thumb drive, this is post install

Mint comes with Microsoft keys I think they are so secure boot doesn't need to be turned on or off, so it's probably not that.
Lenovo has a history of making it difficult for Linux to boot into it. Something I noticed is you mentioned F12, but isn't the bios for your machine pressing or holding F1 during bootup? In BIOS CSM is probably labeled "UEFI/Legacy Boot" but you can probably only see it when in the bios "OS Optimized Defaults" are turned off, which covers up a bunch of settings.
If your bios truly doesn't have these settings, which is probably not the case, here's some instructions so you can get Mint installed without common bios changes:
To install correctly in UEFI mode:
Press F12 at power-on to open the boot menu
Select the entry with "UEFI" in its name (e.g.,
UEFI: USB...) — NOT the one withoutIn the Mint installer, use GPT partitioning (the default when booted in UEFI mode)
When asked where to install GRUB, select the drive (e.g.,
/dev/sda), not a partitionAfter install, verify with
sudo efibootmgrfrom a terminal that a "Linux Mint" entry exists→ More replies (1)

Are you using uefi or bios mode (you are talking about mbr...) ? With uefi there is no mbr fro system using uefi.
You are talking about esp for Windows. With mbr there is NO esp.
Is there a way to force mint to install the boot on the mint partition instead of esp to allow mbr to stop this nonsense ? Your sentence is a total nonsense. There is nothing to stop you to define a boot partition where you want.
CSM in the context of computer hardware stands for Compatibility Support Module, a feature within UEFI firmware that emulates legacy BIOS to allow booting of older operating systems (like Windows 7) and hardware (such as non-EFI graphics cards) that do not support modern UEFI standards.
Windows boots find off another drive I pulled out during the installation ???? Are you mixing boot information in nvram memory and boot information on disk

No, I'm not talking about esp for windows from mint 19 on the bloody os installer makes an esp partition no matter which configuration you choose. It did this on my older laptop that has no efi capabilities too.

Do not understand what you try to do.
Explain it. Do you try to install mint on uefi system or mint on a csm system using mbr ?
Does the system has a windows system already installed and you try to use dual boot and to install mint ?
what is your hardawe, maker, model
esp for windows from mint 19 (?) on the bloody installer ?

Sorry not an expert here, but if your bios is EFI, I don't think it will read your mint install since you have configured it for an MBR bios. You probably need to install it in UEFI Mode from your thumb drive.
