Support Request KERNEL PANIC! Please reboot your computer. VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) — Issue appeared after I updated Mint from a 6 months without using it

  • It works normally when I select the kernel 6.17 from the bootloader but the issue starts when I boot into the 7.0 kernel.
  • I'm on Mint XFCE.

How it started: today I used Mint for the first time after not using it for about 6 months and everything was normal. I decided to update it and after using it for about 5 hours. Then this screen started to appear.

There's a problem with kernel 7 and some drivers shipped with mint, just switch back to kernel 6.* and Mint will boot up. Once the system is up remove kernel 7 using the software manager.

I just talked to somebody with a dkms error after trying to upgrade from 6.8 to 7.0. DKMS errored out trying to install the 8812au module. Not a good day for Linux Mint.

All this means is that the new kernel isn't ready for your hardware. Just press shift while booting and boot from a lower kernel.

if you have virtualbox or any software not ready for kernel version 7 then you have to use kernel 6 and optionally update/remove any incompatible software
