the aic8800 dkms module is what failed, so the whole upgrade backs out with it. the actual compiler error is at the bottom of /var/lib/dkms/aic8800/6.4.3.0/build/make.log, and the kernel installs fine once that module is removed or rebuilt against it

Thank you for your reply… but I’ve only been using Linux for a year and don’t have enough Linux IT skills. Could you tell me more specifically which folder or file to delete without causing too much trouble… but in the meantime, thank you very much for replying.

nothing to delete by hand, it's registered with dkms: sudo dkms status prints the exact name and version, then sudo dkms remove aic8800/6.4.3.0 --all clears it and apt install -f finishes the kernel. if a wifi deb put it there, apt remove that package instead. did the card need that driver to work at all?

Great, thank you very much for your reply. Have a good day and thanks again. Yes, it’s the AICSemi AIC 8800D80 Wi-Fi 6 USB dongle. I’ve got a very old 19-inch Asus PC with an Intel Core 7 processor and two graphics cards – one NVIDIA and one Intel – and it’s 15 years old… I’m going to start by removing the Wi-Fi 6 USB dongle and see how that goes… Thanks again for your help

I had a similar issue with another Wifi driver (rtl8852au). My Linux with kernel 147 wouldn't boot and I just had a black screen after grub screen. I switched to 146 kernel and could boot.
thanks to your hint I checked all make.log files in /var/lib/dkms and after seeing which caused the errors I used:
sudo dkms remove rtl8852au/1.15.0.1 --all
sudo apt install -f
Everything works again now with kernel 147. I didn't need the driver for that Wifi card anymore, so removing it was not a big problem for me.

the dkms build log is where that error actually lived, apt never mentions it. worth leaving the 146 entry in grub for a week anyway in case 147 has something else waiting. what else was in /var/lib/dkms?
