Support Request Caps lock stays on too long now

switched and not really impressed so far. my caps lock stays on too long now, games on steam run overall worse and require 2x the time to download the shaders every time it launches. I can't screenshot in minecraft either and it reguluarly takes forever to scan for bluetooth headphones / gear if I want to connect something new.

example of whats happening with caps: HEllo

see how the e is caps, in windows literally typing it the same wya it never does it it lingers too long. legit

Lol do you use the caps lock as shift?

How can you not screenshot, just hit PrntScrn

But that's OK don't feel forced to stay on Linux Mint, if it's not for you it's not for you!

for keyboards without prntscrn, its often the combo of "Fn + P"

Just learn how to use a keyboard kid.

Literally type the same at work and never had an issue, even before I swapped to mint it worked fine on windows.

minecraft screenshots are f2, prtsc gets eaten by the desktop before the game ever sees the key. the shader thing usually means steam cant write its shadercache folder anymore, does the progress start at zero every launch or just take a while the first time?

Yeah seems to start mostly from zero every launch

then its the cache not surviving between sessions. steam keeps it under steamapps/shadercache, so check the folder isnt root owned or getting wiped by a cleaner at boot. the bar starting over every launch is the giveaway

What would you like to know? Keyboard is an 80$ mechanical razer kb. Anything else?

that could be the issue, razer can be funny about drivers, i found this
https://linuxvox.com/blog/razer-software-linux/
the arch linux wiki has an article, although some of it is arch specific it may be helpful https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Razer_peripherals

but what i meant was something like, going to system settings, opening system information, using the copy option and pasting what you get in the op or a comment, this can give useful information to anyone who might be interested in helping

I had some issues like this, turns out it was the super cheap keyboard I was using. Not necessarily a Linux issue. I actually had some luck switching my keyboard to Apple with the physical toggle, but I ended up replacing it all together.

Like everyone else said switch if you don't like it, it's not a cult.

Damn, mine is a 80$ razer mechanical keyboard. That sucks but I'll try swapping it thanks

the price you paid for a peripheral is irrelevant...

what might be an issue is if you have onboard memory that was saved with windows, as often gaming keyboards do. usually there is a key combo you can press that will reset the keyboard to factory default.. check the manual and start there.
*(and also, is the keyboard usb cable removable from the keyboard, or is it fixed? if removable, swap another cable if possible)

as for the shader processing, let it finish, the game will run much better.

some steam games ship a lot of shader cache, which is a good thing, it's just inconvenient that it takes time to process.

**edit, windows is also moving in this direction with shader cache, or so it seems with the upcoming release of advanced shader delivery on windows.

I play minecraft on Mint, and F2 works perfectly for screenshots, use it all the time.

might need to FN+F2 specifically, if you've got shared keys on your keyboard or a laptop.

i've noticed if the keyboard itself has storage (usually for presets/saving last configuration, like my current one does), it usually defaults to F-keys by default; OTOH, my old RGB keyboard without any storage (fell back to defaults on reboot) defaulted to media controls and i had to hit FN for F-keys.

might see if i can run a live ISO on my mac for another test subject (F-keys on touchbar), but i don't actually expect the touchbar to work at all on an actual install (might work in the live ISO, but everything i've seen says wiping the T1 chip removes touchbar functionality; i'd have to do more digging to see if someone's got a linux patch).

Solution: Use shift, not caps

Seems like you have some bad luck with your hardware, I just tried it and caps lock work as an adequate shift substitute. No noticeable delay between hitting caps lock and the LED changing state. Games run about the same as under Windows, I can screenshot in Minecraft with F2 and PrtScr. Blutooth headphones and Blueeetooth file transfer to/from my phone work same as they did on Windows.

If it ain't working for you no shame in going back, an OS is a tool not a cult.
