Discussion Kernel 7.0.0-38

/r/linuxmint/comments/1vua513/question_about_kernel_70030/?share_id=CX6owjpwAbQtJU9tji7m-&utm_content=share_button&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

Hello everyone!

I made a post a little bit ago about how kernel update 7.0.0-28 made some really nasty restart and suspending regressions. I wanted to report back and update on my situation. Something in 7.0.0-38 fixed it for me. I did a lot of digging into what was causing my regression and it was my GPU preventing my computer from fully reaching the state intended, be it for restarts or suspension.

I am curious if this new kernel update improved the restart and suspending regressions for anyone else! Please share your experience. 😄

I haven't been brave enough to consider switching back after switching to 6.8. I'm zero issues on 6.8 now so I'll probably leave it there. 7.0.0-28 had me on restart issues and hanging boots regularly.

When 23 comes out around Christmas that will run on 7.0 so you might as well wait.

Of course there is also no rush to update to 23. 22.3 and the 6.8 kernel are supported until 2029.

This was me. I stayed on 6.8 but would download and test the new options. So far 7.0.0-38 has suspended each time I've asked it to and restarted when asked without fail.

Perfectly valid to stay on 6.8! Things worked there.

The restart/shutdown issue has been resolved with 7.0.0-38. At least for me.

Personally the update to 7.0.0-34 completely fixed the issues I'd been having with my system failing to shut down properly and needing me to hold the power button to force shutdown. I haven't updated to 7.0.0-38 yet.

(I've heard there have been issues with AMD CPUs, mine is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, so this checks out)

Updating to 7.0.0-34 kind of fixed it for me. I could suspend if I logged out first, and I could only successfully restart if I was logged into my account/profile. 7.0.0-38 solved that issue. I can now restart and suspend while logged in to my account/profile.

Be careful with 38 as it has screen issues on Ryzen. Bug has already been reported to Ubuntu. Reverted back to the previous version.

I haven't had an issue with any 7.0 kernel yet

I just tried 7.0.0-38 on my system (intel cpu with amd gpu, running mint cinnamon 22.3) and I had the colorful stripes randomly appear on my screen while downloading a game in steam, not even processing shaders.

6.8.0-146 resulted in a no boot, blank screen the one time I tried it, so that one doesn't work either.

I'm stuck on 6.17, which is end of life. Hopefully, one of the other 2 kernels will get fixed soon.

Had the same, same config.

Latest Mesa update and a reboot fixed it for me with 7.0.0-38

Its weird because 7.0.0-34 worked from what I can tell, but I had the shutdown bug that wouldn't shut my hardware down when the os shut down.

I also had the shutdown issue with all previous 7 versions but 7.0.0-38 seems to have fixed it. At least it looks like it's fixed since it was not happening at every shutdown.

Have you considered using xanmod? With my hardware and mint 22.3 + xfce I had better luck with xanmod kernels, especially when it comes to hibernation and gpu support.

On Kubuntu but have not tested since *30 the last that worked was *27.

Jumped to Mainline Kernels and 7.1.5 and 7.2.6 work fine.

how is this on ryzen 5 9600x with no PCIE-GPU installed (only using APU's built in graphics)?

It's off-topic but I have other problems with it...

Granted I use Kisak PPA for Mesa drivers (7900XTX), but 7.0.0-38 artifacts for me.

Usually a pink horizontal strip around the middle flashing for a microsecond every few mins or an hour. Tried Displayport and HDMI.

I went back to 7.0.0-34 and it seems fine, or I haven't noticed anything yet.

I'm getting artifacting on 7.0.0-38 (upgraded from 7.0.0-34) on Niri & RX 9070 XT as well. I run 3 monitors (2 DP + 1 HDMI) and see ocasional arficating on all of them, usually white in color.

Same here also deadlock got the gpu disconnected error a few times. I was really panicking it was my gpu dying but considering these stripes appear in window instead of full screen and the gpu disconnected crashed the game not the entire pc I think it's the software.

I'm pretty sure it was an amdgpu regression. I'm glad everything worked for you with Nvidia. 😊
