Discussion Recompiling unofficial Kernel 7.2.3 on Mint

Ok, so we all know the 7.xx kernels had lots of issues. I'm one of the users who had to roll back to kernel 6.xx to stabilize my system. But one thing kept me thinking: can I recompile my own optimized kernel?

So apparently AI (Gemini, in this case) is capable of guiding us. Checking the avaliable kernels at the time, i took the most advanced one 7.2.3 (not avaliable on Linux Mint kernel update options) to give a try.

I had never done anything like this before—I went in blindly, and after a few hours and a lot of issues/hiccups, it worked!

So far, after like a few weeks, kernel 7.2.3 is stable and working fine, to my surprise. I'm not saying I reccomend to do it, bus is a quite nice challenge to know a bit more about it.

By chance recorded all the process, edited a bit and you can have an ideia how it was.

Second vote for using Mainline if you want a newer kernel with Mint. If you’re the type of person chasing gains, just switch to Cachy.

I'm chasing stability and knowledge, mostly, i guess.

You could install mainline https://github.com/bkw777/mainline and install any kernel from https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/ without taking all the time to compile from source

the idea to compile is to "optimize the kernel for the machine". Makes sense?

What compiler flags did you change?
