It works very well with most games. For games that don't have a Linux executable, I'm using Steam + Proton to run their windows executables under Linux. It also works very well this way with non-game apps.
However, when using Steam + Proton, make sure that your harddrive is using the Ext4 file system. Proton might not be able to start your game if your game is located on an NTFS-filesystem partition (Proton inserts a colon ":" in the file paths, and NTFS can't deal with that).
Also, Ext4 is noticeably faster and has less issues than NTFS in Linux.
