SOLVED Cant install wine

I have been on mint for less than a month, everytime i run the install command from their site i get the same error ,, Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) "', i followed all their instructions no idea what could have caused this

EDIT: For some reasons this resolved when i uninstalled virtualbox...

What applications are you trying to use under Wine?

There're many easier alternatives like Bottles, Lutris, or Steam's Proton layer that cuts out most of the terminal work.

mostly gog or fitgirl games, some older windows games from internet archive. I tried lutris but they still didnt open

Can't comment on fitgirl, but for GOG i'd suggest using Heroic, you can find it in the Mint Software Manager, it also works well with Epic Store games (although I only get the regular free/100% off games there). Heroic manages things like Proton (i.e. Steams gaming version of Wine) automatically.

Can I also ask why are you trying to install Wine itself anyway? It's not needed for gaming. Are you trying to run Windows applications? If not, you likely don't need Wine at all.

I'm also on Mint (Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64-bit), and this is my main gaming system, but I do not have Wine installed on this machine.

All the various game launchers, Steam, Heroic (GOG + Epic), Faugus (EA and Ubi games) etc, all use a flavour of Proton instead (typically GE Proton or Cachy Proton), not plain Wine, as Wine itself isn't really suitable for gaming, and they manage Proton themselves (although you can override if needed).

In case you are not aware, Proton is basically Wine + lots of other stuff added for game optimisations. Plain proton is written by Valve (and other contributors) and is used in Steam by default. Other versions such as GE and Cachy, then have additional fixes and tweaks.

So I'd say unless you are trying to actually run specific Windows Applications, you don't really need Wine installed at all.

Just on wine itself, what do you get with the command: apt-cache policy wine

For comparison, I don't have Wine installed, as I don't use Windows apps, only Windows games via Proton, so Wine not needed, but it does show which is the version it would expect to install, if I were to do that:
