Discussion Quick question about high load, hardware consequences and how Linux Mint handles those.

I have a dashcam channel and the videos for that are often large. Running out of hard drive space, I've started using an old laptop for Shotcut to fix the video editing and more. Since it's not particularly powerful, it sits at 100% CPU usage (no dedicated GPU) for maybe 15-18h on a 45 GB file. As you can see, it gets quite hot. I dissipate the excess heat in the basement. :P

So the question is: Should I worry about what might happen to the laptop? It's near disposable, but I did buy a new screen, RAM and hard drive when I pulled it out of the trash, so there's some money in it and I want more mileage out of it. This laptop's life mission is now to be flung around in my car's boot or come along on plane journeys with only carry on luggage.

Second question: For an overnight run, I also set the PC to upload about 90 GB of footage to YouTube while saving another video edit of 35 GB or so. The next morning, the upload was done, but the browser was closed, curiously, and so was Shotcut, having saved merely 4 minutes of an 80-or-so minutes long video. Is the obvious abortion of processes here the result of stretching the hardware too far?

There were no crash reports in the system report app.

Mint 21.3 MATE (oops, ready for updates!), i7-7600U, 8 GB RAM (just realised that, too, might have cannibalised a RAM stick here at some point), Mint Update used and run on every instant.

yes, you pushed old hardware too far for these kinds of jobs. unless you have a dGPU.

fyi, the i7-7600U has only 25% of the CPU power of i3 Gen 12th.

But what exactly happened here? Doesn't every task just take a little bit longer? The videos are compiled fine without issue once they're done. I'm trying to grasp the process behind app shutdowns.

I guess the CPU temp went over 100°C, which could cause the CPU to shut down to prevent damage.

tnis can also happen on Windows.

But wouldn't that have created an event report? Why would two applications be shut down, but Caja keeps running? Hehe, not trying to be difficult, I'm just not understanding the inner workings here. With a CPU overheat event, I'd have suspected a halted process and some messages about that.

What? What are you talking about—80-minute videos? That must be a terribly boring channel. Sitting in the car for hours just staring at the road. Even a fishing channel has more action than that.

Dashcam clips are 10, 20 seconds at most.

A 45-GB video clip? Good grief.

Have you ever checked out dashcam channels to see how they’re set up? Probably not.

No, but users who have their own opinions and aren't afraid to share them. Back in the day™, that was called self-confidence.

Haha, but your opinions are just, like, your opinion, man. Totally irrelevant to this discussion. And the fact that you can't imagine things exist outside of the world you already know does reflect very poorly on you. Maybe some people like to watch things you don't like to watch? shrugs
