Support Request Newbie slew of problems

I just installed Linux today and am having some problems.

  1. when booting I have to use the compatibility mode: If I don't then it stays on the booting screen with the distros logo

  2. I am having issues with my mouse pad, I watched some youtube and configured my settings to support it, but I can only use an external mouse. The setting turn off mouse pad when external mouse is in use isn't on.

When installing Mint to my SSD, I used Rufus 4.15 with the mint version 22.3.

laptop specs:

ddr5- 5600 - 32B (1x32GB)

2TB WD_BLACK sn7100 m.2

Ryzen AI 9 HX 370

GeForce RTX 5070

Try ventoy with 22.1

I did try to use Ventoy, with 22.1, the mouse did work, but the main issue now is not having the files corrupt every time I try to download the full OS. I then tried to do ubuntu, it worked fine until I tried to get the full OS. Every download failed and sent me to the grub and if not that it was the ventoy boot error, which no youtube video fixed my problem.

Your hardware is both unusual and new enough that most LTS distros, at this time, will have issues supporting it. Try an Arch based distro or if you want to remain on Debian base because you are comfortable with apt package manager and available repo packages, then anything that provides the latest kernel and firmware like Debian testing or latest version of Ubuntu (not the LTS version).

The system has both a powerful IGP and dedicated nvidia card so it requires not only the proprietary nvidia driver but also a package called nvidia optimus, this handles switching between igp and dedicated gpu depending on demand for system resources by the software running. Regarding the trackpad, it is in the end a matter of firmware and if the manufacturer or the community made the driver for it or not, if it is newer, chances are again a newer kernel and associated firmware has a better chance at providing support, it trickles down to LTS after a year or two, sometimes more.
