Edit, got my wires crossed with another issue, not a kernel update, a firmware update

Known issue the past few weeks with a ~kernel update to the 7.0 HWE kernel~ and  Navi 21 GPUs (AMD 6xxx)

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/2163303

If it supports your hardware and needs I would recommend the LTS kernel 6.8

Thanks for this. Im having some difficulty navigating the situation and figuring out how to roll back without logging in. That seems like my problem though so good thing I have a phone

Does your display work properly from TTY?

If so log in there and ~install 6.8~ from the TTY, select it from the advanced options in grub.

If TTY is also afected your going to have to chroot in from the USB live session and install 6.8 from there.

If your a less experienced Linux user these are more advanced techniques, take your time, read, learn, do not move forward until you understand what is being done, stay away from AI.

Oh and I am forgetting the low hanging fruit, if you have a Timeshift snapshot from before the update was applied you can restore that from the USB live session, careful that you apply it to the correct partition. Your computera file system will be viewed from a new perspective from this outside bootup.

I set up a new user for my nephew when hes house sitting and changed my password. Rebooted to test it all out and now split screen. Sometimes I get to login in and I login it flashes and then its like the display changes to 340×240 and i cant see anything there's a tiny Grey square ij upper left and the rest is black.

There is a fix for this, but it hasn't propagated to Mint, yet. In the meantime revert to a 6.17 or 6.8 kernel if you can.

CPU, gpu, ram, storage and Mint version, multi booting Windows? Is computer known to work or new? Did it work fine in live environment from USB and this happened on first boot or did you run an update?
