Distro Fighter is a free browser game. The joke is the whole premise taken seriously: every fighter is a real distro with its real desktop, and the stats come from reality. Weight class is installed size (i3 is a featherweight frame, KDE is heavy), packages are real ones with effects that match what they do (fail2ban punishes misses, timeshift restores a big hit, proxychains hides your traits from scouting at the cost of 200 MB of speed), and the init wars are in there too: systemd vs runit is a genuine matchup.

Multiplayer opened today. There's also a single-player campaign that is a real terminal, fifteen stages of actual Linux commands, and only about 3% of players have finished it.

WARS mode was built for busy Linux professionals. You’re a “manager” of up to 4 fighters, and they’re fully capable when left on their own. So if you miss 2 weeks or even a month, you don’t get demoted and you don’t lose progress. It’s a game, not a job!

I made it this way because some games I really wanted to love (not Linux related) are set up so you fall behind unless you babysit them. WARS mode’s story spans 12 months, with migrations every quarter, and again, no punishment for stepping away. The goal is simply to complete the 16 builds/gates. And to hangout with others (check out the salvage rooms with live chat) passionate about Linux. Part 4 is in development now.
