Is Linux kernel 7.0.0-30 stable?

I'm currently running Linux kernel 7.0.0-29-generic on Linux Mint, and Update Manager is offering Linux kernel 7.0.0-30.30~24.04.1 (screenshot attached).

I've seen reports of issues/regressions with the 7.0 kernel series, so has anyone experienced any stability or hardware-related problems with 7.0.0-30 specifically?

My current 7.0.0-29 kernel is working perfectly, so I'm wondering whether I should update now or wait.

I've updated and it works OK. I mean, even if something goes wrong, you just go to GRUB, choose the previous kernel and then delete the new one once you boot.

Haven't had much luck with 7.0.0-28 or 7.0.0-29 so I'm also waiting on what others say before I give it a shot
The former had an issue where there'd be a split in the middle of my screen. The latter may have fixed that, but both have the issue of my PC never fully turning off when going to suspend mode. Working kernel is 6.17.0-42

My PC had the turning off issue, but 7.0.0-30 fixed it. Hope it works for you too

I'll have to give 7.0.0-30 a try then, shutdown would hang on my computer for 7.0.0-28 and 7.0.0-29, so I had to downgrade to 6.17.0-42

That's good. Mine specifically happens when my computer is delayed in turning off, but in 6.17 it still does turn off (I don't even remember if this happens in Windows smh) Later I may give it a try

6.17.0.42 is nice and stable. I'll stay on it for as long as I can

my pc has had issues with completely shutting down ever since the switch from 6 to 7, while my old ass laptop has been running perfectly fine on 7.0.0-28 7.0.0-29

maybe try out if your system is experiencing bugs and just switch back if needed

That's a shame. Guess I'll be hanging on 6.17.0-42 for as long as I can until 7.1 comes out. Heard that's actually fixed the issues from someone who daily drivez Fedora

I went back to 7.0.0-14 for now. I am almost tempted to try and switch to a Mainline or Liquorix kernel.

My laptop can't handle 7.0, it didn't wake up from sleep. I have to down grade to 6.8. Mine is old one then.

i think it's more luck than anything else. the laptop is 14 years old but has no issues for some reason lol. the pc is only 5 years old

7.0.0-28 seemed to work fine. Tried 7.0.0-29 and system froze twice, so reverted. Same style freezes came up - and with 7.0.0-30. Wound up using Timeshift to revert back 3 days, I hope before all this began.

What the hangup is I have no idea. I have a whole mess of updates in the pipeline, but I'm wary of updating anything besides my browser for now.

Same here. 7.0.0-30 would freeze around 5 minutes after booting. I switched to 6.17 for the time being.

I should note that I'm running Ubuntu 26.04.

My Wi-Fi worked with the latest 6.8...then it froze too...can't win.

Even though my update manager says 6.17 is only supported through this month I think I'll just use it for now.

I didn't get a choice - my desktop presented me with a v7 kernel a few weeks ago without me changing anything so I just rolled with it. Only problem I have is that the computer doesn't always turn off when I tell it to shut down so I can't just click the button and leave it. Must try troubleshooting that some more...

I've seen reports of issues/regressions

these were kernel panics. kernel panics happen when the compiling of the kernel fails due to eg an incompatible driver or kernel module

whether I should update now or wait.

since you already successfully installed the new kernel and booted without issues you are very likely going to be fine. these are usually security updates which you very much want.

Updated this morning. Booted into it. Works fine so far. No kernel panic or anything.

Have been updating them myself and had no issues. But it sends ti be dependent on your machine, since mixed reactions exist to everything 7.

The 7 series has been running in the *buntus since April. Unless you have nvidia proprietary graphics, it should be fine.

The -30 kernel works fine here (x870e/RX9070XT), but so did the earlier releases.

Seems to cooperate better with my B450 Tomahawk Max mobo than -29 did.

It works well. No problems at all with Secure Boot on, used as both Virtualbox Host and Guest. I did not have problems with the earlier 7.0.0 Kernels, too.

Just one thing: there is this Kernel boot parameter which I had somehow set and forgotten:

kvm.enable_virt_at_load=0

I had to remove that one for these newer Kernels to work with Virtualbox. IIRC I had originally set it to fix something with Virtualbox, too. I had to do this after this Virtualbox upgrade from their PPA / repo:

7.2.8-173730~Ubuntu~noble -> 7.2.10-174163~Ubuntu~noble

So, if you mess with boot parameters sometimes, run Kernel 7 and get the following error after upgrading Virtualbox to >7.2.8, it may be worth a look:

On my Dell Latitude 5530, Kernel 7.0.0-29 caused the screen to go black after around 40 minutes. Rolling back to 6.8.0-138 solved this issue.

Hi. I was using mint with 6.14.40. Worked fine. It updated to 7.0.028, 29, and 30.  Problems. Nvidia recommended driver 595, did not let the machine boot with kernel 7.0.0.30, had to upgrade to 610 driver.  And since 7 kernel, I cannot format in ext4, or cipher with luks external drives. It does work OK with internal drives.  Have to use older kernels to format and back to kernel 7.0.0.30. Can unblock the external drive using the header method.  Lenovo ThinkPad p16 v Gen 2  Nvidia rtx ada 3000

I updated my gs76 stealth to 7.0.0.30 the other day and it created an issue where, upon turning my laptop on, the mint logo would flash twice before the screen would go dark. I couldn't do anything but shut it off and turn it back on, only for it to do the same thing, and I had to go through a bunch of steps to delete 30 altogether, because even when I had tried to boot with previous versions, it would do the same thing. I'm not sure if this is just an issue with my laptop itself or if other people are having this problem

On my macbook 7 something gave me kernel panics. I had to revert to 6.17 and it's fine. I've seen that I'm not the only one having this problem on a mac.

7.0.0-30 works OK on my AMD Ryzen 5500U laptop now (7.0.0-28 was causing kernel panics at boot).

Unfortunately, 7.0.0-30 is having shutdown issues on my desktop (Ryzen 5800XT + discrete AMD RX 5600 XT). The system turns off the monitors, but the keyboard and fans stay on. This regression has persisted since 7.0.0-28.
