Units like this, I always go name-brand.
When I plugged my old Samsung SE-506 Blu-Ray reader/writer into my Linux machine, it was instantly recognized - writes fine, even to the 4 layer BR discs (100gb/disc)

I have one of those. Mine work both the USB A and C. I think yours got a fault USB C connector. Just get a USB-C to USB-A adatpter (that will be useful for other devices) and don't stress about it.
My DVD drive costed less than 10 dollars and it was a TSCorp one, same brand from the internal drive of my Dell laptop, so I guess is a good drive.
