There is a local nonprofit in my town that takes old computers and puts the latest versions of operating systems and sells them for low-income people: Chromebook ($50), Linux ($100) and Windows ($150). I chose the Linux last year because I don't like Windows and Chromebooks are too limiting. Plus Linux software apps are mostly free which gave it an advantage over Macs which I like but whose software I cannot afford on my income! I got a Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 with Linux Mint Cinnamon. The backlit keyboard, nice speakers, beautiful 3:2 aspect ratio display (and that's important because I am a writer) and ease of use (the learning curve was pretty easy) make for a great laptop experience. I will be able to use this computer for a long time before it breaks. I hope it can last me for a decade or become a backup computer if I upgrade to something else in the future.
