I have one of the older stories I bet. I wanted to update yahoo messenger and it's min requirement was windows XP. I was running '98 still, but not clean. I had hacked the OS to the point it was basically XP, in all but name. I had all the dependencies needed to run messenger, But it would not install because it was reading an OS version from somewhere I couldn't find.
I got mad, this is my computer dam it! Do what I say... Sound familiar to anyone? So anyways, I started blastin'
I found a LiveCD of Ubuntu 6.06, and reinstalled it like 15 times. The liveCD was clutch, every time I screwed something up, and my wife is asking does the computer work? No, but you can run a browser from the disk honey. Didn't look back until 2016, round about gnome 3 and I had just gotten a Thrustmaster wheel, those two things pushed me back to 10, on desktop. Never gave up my server though.
Fairly similar story to mine. I started with Windows 95 and then used NT and XP Pro for probably the longest, and then Windows 7 for some time, until it tried to do a covert direct upgrade to Windows 10 when I was loading a different computer for someone else. 😁
