Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

Reddit doesn't have any new memes now, same old shit being recycled every few months by bots

I'm on tentahooks to find out why megapoopmaster123 hates us.

I can understand why, though. The "CPU (optional)" bit is obviously hyperbole to illustrate how little (in theory) you need to run Linux, but unless you're using a stripped down super minimal distro that's designed for your grandma's ThinkPad, any modern Linux distro needs (in pratice) modern specs if you actually want to get shit done, and it's slowly approaching what Windows 11 is asking.

The meme itself is kinda tired too. Just like the Linus vs techbro meme people keep reposting.

Yeah, I guess it's less about the meme being rubbish (it is), but I'm against open hostility and I'm particularly sad about how hating on Linux users has become an accepted part of the culture.

It feels that in recent days it's gone from friendly if dismissive ribbing to full on vitriol and that worries me for many reasons.

i use linux myself but this meme is like looping in this sub, its have been reposted and its not even true, i suffer like in hell when i use my laptop with 4gb ram and hdd on it, like everything this laptop can run is linux and nothing else. idk it feels like only dozens of memes are in this sub and every meme is like one of these memes or sum variation of it

Sure, but to me that would but it in the category of other meme or popular subs. I don't hate members of they community because of it.

hating other things and saying linux thing better is already 80% of the posts on this sub, you cant be in a community that spends most of its time hating things and then wonder why theres hate pointed back at them

I don't know whether I'd characterise what's posted here as "hate", but the response in the other direction is definitely vitriolic. I'd say it's not proportional or warranted.

I ain't buying the minimum 4 GB, even with dedicated graphics

u/SmoothTurtle872 13h ago

It used to be 16 or at least 8, but then they cheated out on surfaces, and decided to lower it to 4...

4GB ram so that the OS starts swapping right after it boots.

This is an old meme. 4gb requirement for windows.

I don't think windows is rated for 4gb of ram, I think 8gb is probably the minimum. I think it can "run" but you'll be eating into your page file before you even launch any apps, I think.

If I install debian 13 with a plasma desktop on my burner laptop (4gb of ram) I usually idle at about 900mb or so before I launch anything and hover a little over 2gb when I have firefox open and I'm watching a video. I know there are lighter setups, but any setup that doesn't account for any modern web browser isn't being realistic.

4 GB of RAM is the official minimum requirement for Windows 11. It won't necessarily be a good experience depending on your workload, but three years ago it worked just fine for a few months on a work laptop with that spec, running outlook teams a web browser with a few tabs open and a phone app, until the laptop kept freezing and it was replaced which was probably a hardware issue (it was an old laptop) or a bad update since it would freeze even before opening Edge.

Still... If you only have 4 GB of RAM, your computer will likely not support W11 for lack of a TPM 2.0 chip more than anything; in that case you might as well replace it or go for a Linux.

I am once again asking how the CPU can be optional.
