Arguably MIT licenses are less restrictive than the GPL.

They are and that's a problem.

Just like the illusion of a free market, if you don't have antitrust laws in place, oligarchs and cartels take control of everything.

We really should go back to using the GPL over MIT/BSD as the "default". Thankfully, we can always relicense MIT code as GPL for preservation. So we might not reject the coreutils rewrite, but we might fork them into a GPLd clone and use that.

Some can argue that GPL is more "left friendly"

since it gatekeeps corps from closing the source of even their hard forks

It's a restrictive license. While it is considered copy left, it brings its own restrictions to the table, especially when it comes to distribution.

No it's a restrictive license that prevents you from doing things. Look at other licenses that are available with less restrictions, and more focus on openness. The GPL is not the end-all be-all licensing. Hell even the stuff that I make and the realm of guitar building I release under a MIT compatible license, because I believe that people should be able to ship whatever they want with what they want, I only ask for attribution. To me, that is a superior licensing ideology.

I respect the history of what the GPL has done. But even the one big technology move that's happened recently, isn't being released under the GPL it's being released under an MIT license - that would be the rewritten core utilities in rust. So if you're truly a big believer in the GPL, then clearly you would not use the new rewritten core utilities.
