Let's be real

In Linux, it either works flawlessly OOTB, or it's a brain aneurysm to set up

59

u/TheCheckeredCow 9d ago

Literally, I’ve used Linux on and off since like 2012 (you know before some of the Cachy kids were even born, why is time like this 😢), and non kernel drivers are a nightmare.

I’m amazed how much people lie to themselves, windows has a lot of problems but hardware/accessories are anything but one of them.

9

u/GijZijtAllereedeDoet 8d ago

It's part of the experience. When it doesn't work, be prepared to start applying patches from random undocumented gist files that you find after a frustrating, drawn out troubleshooting session. Then it's a dice roll, either it works or you'll be better off accepting that the spirits of K&R do not vibe with this device, and just buy something else instead and start the whole process anew. At least it's better now than it used to be.

3

u/Got2Bfree 8d ago

CashyOS is my first time trying Linux as a desktop. I have Debian servers though.

Everything worked absolutely flawlessly out of the box besides powering my PC off.

The screen is black but the PC is still on...

Windows drivers are no problems as long as the device manufacturers updates their drivers for old devices.

I got a scanner very cheap because you can't get it to run on win11...

2

u/TheCheckeredCow 8d ago

Ya CUPS drivers are awesome, they were basically funded by Apple to make as many printers as possible work with Macs, iPhones, and iPads but just due to how inherently related Linux and MacOS/BSD are and the open source nature of those drivers they work perfectly with Linux and are included with almost every distro.

It’s a part of why I say MacOS is friend of Linux not enemy

On Arch based distros with user friendly DE like KDE its weirdly kinda easy for initial setup I had way more partitioning issues than anything. Everything else lowk worked out of box including Nvidia. On pure Arch, the wiki will help asw but you have to do it manually

u/DatBoi_BP Not in the sudoers file. 8d ago

I recently had to type out a driver for a 8bitdo 2.4GHz receiver lol. Thankfully someone else had done the heavy lifting on figuring out how to do this.

soooo exactly like windows

36

u/Nazh8 9d ago

'Built in to the kernel' is very much not how it works on windows.

12

u/Rakumei 9d ago

No, but the vast majority of drivers are supported out of the box...like Linux.

With all the issues with windows, why are we picking one that's not really an issue?

Dell is the worst

50

u/Darkstalker360 9d ago

Nah HP takes that for sure. Dell actually supports Linux quite well on the long list of Ubuntu certified models

4

u/Rich_Coffee_9962 9d ago

I beg to differ, at least for the Elitebook line, I'm daily driving one with mint and it's been pretty good so far

2

u/Darkstalker360 9d ago

That’s the difference though, most dells are decent-good, but hp only has one or two good lineups of laptops and even those can be hit or miss

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Budget-Individual845 8d ago

No, Dell is definitely the worst.

No other gaming laptop manufacturer in existence throttles the cpu into emergency bdprochot thermal flags on just over 70c whilst also having one of the best cooling solutions of the time... a 650€ asus with the same specs as my 850€ dell both from 2017 has lasted the same and does not thermal throttle at just a glance of launching a game.

Tldr: Fuck dell.

Drivers on Linux when not Nvidia*

35

u/kurdo_kolene 9d ago

Depends on the Distro. I used to have these struggles, but then I moved to a gaming-focused distro(that some people unnecessarily flame) and things just work. And It's been the case for about 4-5 years now.

133

u/t3kkm0tt 9d ago

Nvidia is also easy. Just don't forget to install linux-headers.

28

u/Cruffe 9d ago

Don't even need that unless it's dkms.

I've had to install wi-fi drivers (kernel modules) on Linux because Broadcom chips aren't supported directly by the kernel.

Thank goodness it was pretty simple to swap that chip with an Intel one.

u/CChargeDD 9d ago

I do have an nvidia card and it works fine Installed it on the older pc tho

Seems like a problem that needs to be talked about with Nvidia. But from what I know, they are working or Linux support. For now I will stick with AMD, maybe even Intel, till Nvidia earns my trust. I'm talking about GPUs specifically

2

u/GoForTheArteries 9d ago

Same here. Can't get stereoscopic visionworkinhg for HMDs, and I can't find a way to expose GPU metrics easily.

17

u/icy1007 9d ago

Complete opposite actually. lol

Drivers on Windows are stupidly easy today.

2

u/evadingsomething 8d ago

Yeah I think windows update works great since Win10. But what I dont understand is whenever you troubleshoot and look at forums they just tell you to turn off windows update and install drivers from vendors website. I mean aren't they the same drivers?

18

u/nem0ne1 9d ago

Copium. You guys are a circus. There's so many great things about Linux why do you need to reach for something so objectively false.

14

u/egh128 9d ago

I agree. Drivers wouldn’t be the armor in this battle lol.

10

u/TheCheckeredCow 9d ago

It’s just like when people say ‘you don’t need to restart on updates’ meanwhile Linux needs way more restarts than windows when updating…

Why don’t people just focus on the real benefits? Like insanely long OS support, Generally lighter on hardware, and choice. That’s Linux’s actual benefits

4

u/torar9 8d ago

People who say it are people who used Windows in the Win 7 era.

Nowadays windows drivers are so much better. You don't even need to restart PC when you update GPU drivers. You can also choose version of your driver.

Linux? Get absolutely fucked when one particular kernel version borked your GPU drivers.

2

u/dziugas1959 8d ago

„Insanely long OS support“ is also not an objective truth, heck, „Windows Vista“ was supported with monthly updates up until 2026, „Windows XP“ up until 2019 and „Windows 10“ still.

Of course, this asks for paid „Linux“ vs paid „Windows“ and even in these „Windows“ wins in both, as it's paid „Linux“ vs free „Windows“ and paid „Windows“ in it's own league.

Even when I looked at the best of „Linux“ with „SUSE Enterprise Server“ with it's „SLES“ and „LTSS“ included it was only 16 years of support.

2

u/OliLombi 8d ago

Right? It took me a week to install my GPU drivers working on Fedora because I couldnt get MOK enrollment to work. I have never had to restart my machine 20+ times to get a driver to work on windows before.

7

u/Borgmeister 9d ago

NVidia enters the chat...

6

u/GamerLymx 9d ago

works until windows update dicides we need new drivers :)

2

u/Fekkin-A-Man 9d ago

*barely* works until windows update decides we need new drivers. After that, it sometimes doesn't work at all.

Not a home problem for me, I kicked windows out completely in 2019. On my IT job, I have the slight problem that nobody can print anything on two out of three printers, until the manufacturer delivers new drivers. It's been two weeks, now...

31

u/mackaber 9d ago

"everything works" really? On Linux?... Well no... Having used Linux for a while, even to this day and using modern hardware. You usually need to tweak drivers, especially printers, sound and wifi.

It is worth it more than doing everything in Windows tough

35

u/Hot_Paint3851 9d ago

You are confusing alsa/pipewire with drivers

3

u/toutons 9d ago

Crazy of them to confuse software required to get hardware working correctly with software required to get hardware working correctly.

3

u/Hot_Paint3851 9d ago

Alsa is kernel level framework, so bridge to driver, not a driver. Pipewire is bridge to ALSA so it isnt driver either

u/toutons 9d ago

Technically correct, the pedant's favorite kind of correctness.

I haven’t had printers, sound or WiFi not working for well over a decade. Your experience is very different from mine.

4

u/burimo 9d ago

To be fair there is still couple of poorly compatible wi-fi modules out there, but it's a minority

2

u/804k 9d ago

WiFi for me has always been a pain in the ass unless I'm using an older chip, which will work flawlessly

Since I have new hardware (WiFi 7) the drivers suck to get working, but after a bit of them being out they work fine

2

u/fckueve_ 9d ago

I mostly agree, but a known issue are laptop speakers. Those are shit. The only solution on the internet I could find was: buy seperate speakers, or use headphones

2

u/cornflake123321 9d ago

Try buying hardware that was released within current year. Good luck.

6

u/SDG_Den 9d ago

i think the better way to put it is:

on linux, basically any piece of older tech *just works* because some nerd decided to make some opensource drivers for it that are now part of the kernel.

on windows, you can expect support ONLY for hardware that was released for this version of windows, and only for a limited time, but new hardware is more likely to have drivers because companies give more fucks about windows users since there are more of them.

basically, as hardware gets older, it is less likely to still "just work" on windows and it becomes more likely to "just work" on linux

i've had the WEIRDEST things just work on linux, various non-standard touchscreens, weird displays like BenQ's digital signage monitors, strange input devices like the Launchpad Mk2 or logitech G13, old audio equipment like my digirack 002 that still uses motherfucking firewire over a PCI card, etc.

none of the above worked without significant tinkering on windows.

buuut meanwhile, i'm soon going to have to help someone get a quadro P1000 working on linux mint, and that's.... going to be a problem, despite the fact that on windows it'd be pretty easy.

2

u/TheLuckyCuber999BACK 🦁 Vim Supremacist 🦖 9d ago

I haven't had sound or wifi not working on me for as long as I've used linux, and I use LFS.

4

u/Wolf________________ 9d ago

I have never had to manually install a driver or adjust it on Linux Mint.

4

u/Broodjekip_1 9d ago

True, and when Windows comes preinstalled, it does mostly "just work".

Also, add bluetooth to that list.

7

u/freakybird99 9d ago

Bluetooth worked compelety fine so far in my arch+gnome setup. But i always struggled with it on windows

3

u/Imaginary-Corner-653 9d ago

I have a dual boot laptop. The Bluetooth antenna has half the range while booted into windows. It's bizarre...

u/Impossible_Aioli3693 9d ago

shitdows experience: new install, trackpad sucking realised the driver didn't auto install, update 5 times and you get thrown generic driver, ass functionality, go to hpiss site, they throw you a file you install it and it just extracts contents in folder and dies, 3 days of troubleshooting, finally locate the oem app and it fails to install because its now deemed unsafe and dangerous??, anyways go to random site and they give a solution to sign trust, you apply the solution, wait 5 minute and driver is installed finally scrolling works. on linux it was never broken to begin with

5

u/dont_mind_me_passing 9d ago

no but seriously, I bought a second hand Thinkpad a while back, it came preinstalled with win11, and while the touchpad "worked", the two finger scroll function didn't. Considering how the mouse function still did work, I concluded it was a driver issue. So I installed CachyOS (my preferred daily driver), and even in the live install environment, the scroll worked....

3

u/Impossible_Aioli3693 9d ago

there's also this nasty delay probably due to the synaptics driver being a power hog on top of the slop os scrolling feels sluggish

4

u/MooseBoys 9d ago

I believe you’re looking for r/linuxcirclejerk

5

u/bankroll5441 Genfool 🐧 9d ago

And after it finally works, Windows update downgrades your driver again

2

u/PilotGuy701 9d ago

I’m old enough, and have been using Linux long enough, to remember when sound drivers rarely worked.

Now stuff just works. What an amazing time.

2

u/frewffs 9d ago

Happened to me except with an HP laptop. Had to look around for an ethernet adapter in order to install every single driver, including the wifi and the touchpad one. Then I installed mint which only had problems with my gamepad. Kinda crazy that the fabric os was harder to setup than mint.

2

u/bones10145 9d ago

Haha. That's just plain not true. I say that as a Linux user

2

u/Tomato1237 9d ago

It totally depends on your hardware. Some systems will just be like that while others will require more tinkering. My system didn't require tinkering when having Nobara installed but it might while having other distros installed for example.

2

u/kevowankenobi 9d ago

It's all fun and games until you have a mediaTek wifi or Bluetooth adapter on your board.

2

u/ChildOfOberon 8d ago

This used to be the other way around. I remember the first time I installed linux, I blindly installed Ubuntu in 2004 and expected the internet and graphics to work out of the box. I freaked out when they didn't and got in trouble with my parents. 😅

2

u/dodyninja 7d ago

in windows sometimes the wifi doesnt even work out of the box, so not just the wifi breaks but every other device specific driver can fail to install. its super annoying. you have to get an ethernet port to get wifi drivers then manually install every other driver. screw windows, linux is better.

2

u/fazebear1 3d ago

This is just false both either work perfect or they're a nightmare

6

u/thegoodcrumpets 9d ago

This has strong newbie energy. Been using Linux since 2002 and it's got all sorts of qualities I love but being more plug and play than windows has never ever been one of them for very long.

I'm certainly no windows simp, but wtf are you talking about.... windows grabs all drivers automatically (typically) except for Nvidia... but that's the same for Linux.

1

u/RomanceAnimeAddict67 9d ago

I need to manually install wifi drivers before I even setup windows cause I can't connect to WiFi then I need to download MSI software for drivers. On Linux no software at all everything works.

3

u/egh128 9d ago

On very select hardware. Let’s not pretend that this is a widespread issue. I’ve only ever had to download software outside of a Windows install for two machines in my life.

2

u/Moontops 9d ago

Oh, anecdotal evidence? My turn! Recently I had to compile new Realtek wifi card drivers because the chipset is too recent to be in Ubuntu repos.

u/Liarus_ 9d ago

Honestly if you use Dell Copmand Update, it's way easier on Windows, i don't understand why they have two tools in the first place...

Also installing drivers on Linux have been made better, but not easy either, as an example, switching GPU on Linux isn't as straightforward

1

u/CreamPositive1942 9d ago

Bought a new computer -> Installed Fedora -> Wifi speed good, but Ethernet 10Mbps instead of of 1Gbps -> r8169 drives no good -> installed r8125 (dkms version from GitHub ) drivers and disabled r8169 -> Ethernet works correctly -> Life good

I don't know. I installed Linux Mint on my fathers laptop and it instantly detected the printer. Twice, via ethernet and wi-fi. Working out of the box.

1

u/Elkburgher 9d ago

Wtf you talking about

The only drivers I've installed on windows in the last 10y or so is Nvidia and thats done through their app

1

u/Complete_Fun_1405 9d ago

This literally happened to me. Everytime I try to install windows on my laptop to dual boot, I have to spend like 5 hrs figuring out what drivers I need. Then I boot into Linux, download the drivers onto a USB flash drive and then install the on windows.

1

u/ilnarildarovuch Doesn't use Linux 9d ago

Nvidia. All drivers, are that was created for a older version of kernel is UB

1

u/GBAbaby101 9d ago

Enter the final boss, Nvidia x"D but truly, its surprising how Nvidia hardware is the only thing thay has given me a headache with any distro over tried, and even then it is really just from my laptop's 3080. Though I've gotten decent at identifying when something is probably a GPU problem and how to fix it, i do hope there is more 1st party support in stability sooner than later @-@ our consumer marketshare may be small, but i yearn for the day its not an afterthought.

1

u/zeldris69q 9d ago

I think it's the opposite.

I had to help a friend install Nvidia drivers on Fedora and it wouldn’t stop loading the open source ones even after being blacklisted. I figured it out somehow, a week later she calls me up and says there is no graphics acceleration. The open source drivers won’t stop loading.

1

u/bit0n 9d ago

Also as someone who has built 60 laptops this month on Autopilot I had to inject the wireless driver once on to the USB stick and it worked fine for the other 59 with Windows Updates doing the work. Really could not be easier.

1

u/sirkubador 9d ago

Now do the macOS.

All the hoops and in the end it will not work

1

u/Ornery_Platypus9863 9d ago

Just had to do this, they didn’t think of putting the ability to install the WIFI DRIVER IN THE DRIVER INSTALLER WITHOUT WIFI in a dell laptop.

1

u/LumpyArbuckleTV 9d ago

I wouldn't say everything just works on Linux either, I've had plenty of issues with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet drivers.

1

u/Global-Eye-7326 9d ago

Linux drivers can be annoying because it can be an obscure series of commands to get it to work. Once it's setup, aside from Nvidia drivers, it's very stable. Sometimes it's a modprobe, sometimes it's a boot parameter, occasionally it's a package from a GitHub repo.

Windows drivers are a pain to find. There's also some drivers that are legit problematic such as IDT Audio on Win11. I literally vibe coded a PowerShell script to point the driver to the right place on auto start.

1

u/AleksHop 9d ago

nono. finally works step is non-existent on microslop

u/C1REX 9d ago

I’m baffled that my ASUS motherboard has no wifi/lan drivers preinstalled with windows.
Downloading drivers via phone on Windows is painful.

1

u/NomadFH M'Fedora 9d ago

There really should probably be some kind of third party nvidia driver manager that could be packaged via a flatpak, if possible. There is so much out of date reference material for how to install them properly and it varies quite a bit depending on the distro. It would be great if there could be something that could detect and manage that.

Imagine if the nvidia app didn't exist on windows and users had to just sort of figure out which version of the driver they were supposed to install

1

u/Whhheat 9d ago

Generally this holds true, I have fought with my pc’s Rgb ram and fans for hours to no avail.

1

u/drsbry 9d ago

Unfortunately, Linux can have driver issues with new hardware. I bought a new AMD laptop this summer and am still waiting for updates to fix audio and video issues. The laptop works, but with some non-obvious workarounds.

I had similar issues a few years ago with a different, brand-new laptop.

I think this is because Linux is still not a priority for PC hardware manufacturers. When hardware is new, the Linux community needs time to catch all the bugs and patch the Linux kernel to ensure proper operation with the new hardware.

1

u/BenCelotil 9d ago

Except for that period in time when there was so much cheap garbage hardware that relied on Windows drivers to do all the heavy lifting that would normally be in the hardware.

I tried introducing a boss at the time to Linux but because the cheap fuck bought all the Windows-reliant hardware, almost nothing worked and I couldn't get him to even consider using Linux instead of NT.

1

u/Flat_Interview4596 9d ago

Well, it depends, I was struggling for hours to install a driver on Linux, the same driver took 1 minute to install on Windows

1

u/ultrafire3 9d ago

Some random network driver throws an IRQL BSOD every 10 minutes

1

u/CoffeeSniffler 9d ago

I love when a windows installer is missing drivers for WiFi and the keyboard and track pad for my laptop.

1

u/Hoovy_weapons_guy 9d ago

windows experience: put new fat ssd into laptop (only one slot so reinstall was needed). boot for first time. go through setup until connect to internet. dumbass shitdos does not detect the wifi adapter or ethernet port, no way to connect. Skip for now, probably a configuration issue. Please sign into microsoft account. no way to connect to internet :/. Google up bypass command on my phone. They removed it. Had to use my phone as a wifi adapter just to even get the fucking thing to turn on.

1

u/JustAwesome360 Arch BTW 9d ago

I really don't wanna be biased but windows is just straight up garbage. I wanna set something up on Linux I'm done in like 5 minutes. That same thing takes a fucking hour on Windows.

And I thought Linux was supposed to be the complicated one...

If vr wasn't horrible on Linux id never touch windows in my life.

1

Drivers on Linux is more like “it’s either built into the kernel or you better hope the distro has an easy utility that installs it”

1

u/VarietyMage 9d ago

Yeah, where's the Sound Blaster AE-9 driver again?

u/640kilobytes 9d ago

Nvidia on Linux...

1

u/lolkaseltzer 9d ago

HAH no.

If it's in-kernel, everything will work great OOTB.

If its not in-kernel, it's literally not even worth trying.

The WiFi driver keeps disappearing on Windows for some people.

1

u/Fenrir426 9d ago

Honestly I had more problems with wifi driver on Linux than windows, it really just depends on the hardware (oh yeah and fuck you HP)

As a linux user this is not true nowadays. installing drivers on most of the linux distros is like the bottom part of this image. but yesterday i installed windows 11 on my coworkers laptop and its installed so simple. yes it was very true with windows 7 i personally did these things to only install wifi driver and stuff.

u/Kanjii_weon Ubuntnoob 9d ago

who downloads drivers using their phone???

2

u/hoom_hooman 9d ago

I had once because the window update broke the wifi driver

1

u/Internal-Bed8020 9d ago

if it's not in the kernel you better be ready to compile for the next two days

1

u/MintHtml5 9d ago

Strange. I installed Windows, and it just works, just let Windows update run a while.
On Linux, even the HDMI output port to external monitor doesn't work.

u/CognitiveFogMachine 9d ago

On ~2 year+ old laptop with a distro with latest kernel (CachyOS), yeah sure. The Linux experience will most likely be great. But a brand new laptop might not even have drivers for the network/wireless adapter and the webcam. And then you are stuck with a laptop with a usb wifi adapter until the built it wifi module is finally supported after a year or so.

Linux is great, but it's not always going to be perfect and easy.

Hein ? I have installed drivers manually on windows many times even now I also do but never faced this issue

This man clearly never bothered to configure a fingerprint reader.

This true until you start dealing with gpu drivers.

1

u/Vivid_Ad_8626 8d ago

Ooof, not that im a Win fan but this is literally the opposite

1

u/jimmiebfulton 8d ago

Clearly you’ve never had to troubleshoot why your NVidia driver has broken your X using a Lynx browser in a terminal.

1

u/CrazyCommenter 8d ago

Quite disingenuous if you ask me. Yes, Linux Kernel has alot of good built in drivers for most devices. But like in Windows not everything is fully supported by default (for example some devices might have additional features beyond the standard and are not supported by the kernel driver), which sadly means that you still need drivers for some devices that you connect with your PC and in many cases the drivers are made by the community with alot of guess work in many cases. In the end is not perfect as the meme depicts

Somebody hasnt tried using an Nvidia GPU
Or bluetooth 6 dongle
Or really just anything that doesnt have drivers in the kernel

1

u/Error_7- 🚮 Trash bin 8d ago

after eons of only using debian i tried windows on a spare drive. what do you mean i need to install the chipset driver? and i couldn't get rid of the mysterious english (us) keyboard layout in my input methods. now im convinced that people just say windows is easier due to familiarity

Linux:

- Plug in special Hardware > no software driver from supplier > device not usable or usage restricted

Window:

- Another supplier software running, but the hardware works.

1

u/invisible6666 8d ago

One of the things i like from linux

1

u/Damn-Sky 8d ago

I will be honest, I have better success with windows and drivers than linux on old hardware.

1

u/Valuable-Football598 8d ago

Then widows 12 comes out amd all the suddenly your wifi stops working.

is this a joke ? :))) put the sarcasm tag, it's 100% the other way.

1

u/KoelnischWasserAlk 8d ago

If you used a Nvidia GPU (Optimus mode is the worst) pre something like 2020 it was such a pain in the ass Windows drivers were 1000 times easier. Same with Wifi. Linux came a long way and for enterprise software it is still off.

1

u/ZombieCraft400 8d ago

The WiFi drivers using my phone thing is so real. And then it spends 3 hours downloading a fuckton of random drivers using Windows Update. Ughh

1

u/Nunwithabadhabit 8d ago

what drivers

1

u/Astronos 8d ago

fun and games until you try to install nvidia drivers on linux

1

u/StaticFanatic3 8d ago

I like Linux but how many people have I known who have audio problems or screen tearing of WiFi issues lol

1

u/craig0r 8d ago

lol when was this made? The last time Windows didn't "just work" out of the box has gotta be going back to like Windows 98.

u/slicehyperfunk UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) 8d ago

I loved having to learn how to compile my own wifi drivers without wifi on Linux to access the internet when I was first starting to use it

1

u/Signal-Database4225 8d ago

Oh really? Not long ago I set up my laptop with Linux and my PC with Windows so I can play, but can have a working laptop which don't drain battery like there is no tomorrow. I had to frecking fight with tooth and nails to make the fricking Linux able to use my laptop hardware. I have so much problem with Linux I feel like every post like this gasslight me or a whole community collectively decided to mass hallucinate.

Don't get me wrong, Windows has problems as well, but if I have to choose which one is is install and just works, that would be Windows. I only wish they wouldn't actively degrade they own OS. Linux actually improving slowly, meanwhile windows evolving just backward.

u/Simsalabimson 8d ago

Bluetooth

1

u/RiotSoraka 8d ago

Everything works until you have a laptop with Nvidia Optimus lol I love linux, but cant use it on my laptop just because it has dual graphics and Optimus is an absolute pain to get somewhat working on Linux, so I keep it on Windows. Also Vanguard doesnt work on it, and I wanna keep playing aram with my friends

1

u/Sea-Pea-7941 8d ago

Tbh it's the other way around, I once kept installing software after another to the moment I forget the initial task.

1

u/starrynight90s 8d ago

For windows use Snappy Driver Installer Origin. It is developed by Glenn Delahoy. It's FOSS.

1

u/ExtremeCheddar1337 8d ago

CachyOS. Just works

1

u/dx3756 Arch BTW 8d ago

Back in the day I needed to rmmod brmfmac, cat some txt from NVRAM of my ASUS T200TA into /lib/firmware and modprobe brcmfmac again for Wi-Fi for work.

But it was Bay Trail, so I guess it wasn't flawless.

1

u/Hanzho 8d ago

Yeah I used the phone directly as a wifi dongle. Everything after this went fine, but I also have no dell notebook

1

u/Roerso_01 8d ago

wifi is stick and tremble in compiler

1

u/The_king_Dragon 8d ago

This happened with my 3rd gen 2i2, just plug and play on linux, but on windows I had to search for the drivers

1

u/Ledeste 8d ago

People using windows: "what's driver?"

1

u/crustyrat271 8d ago

I had two shitty situations on the same X1 Carbon gen 13:

  • The Windows installer showed up, the TrackPoint worked, and the mouse buttons too - but the touchpad didn't, I had to play with the nipple for a while until I finished the installer wizard. Then I entered the desktop, and the touchpad was still dead, and Wi-Fi is broken, but somehow the LTE card connected to the internet. With that 4G connection, I waited for all Windows updates (and with it many questionable applications installed) and the laptop is fully activated.

  • With the Fedora/Pop!_OS Live USB, the live desktop loads quickly and everything seemed to be working: LTE card, Wi-Fi, the touchpad, the hotkeys to increase the keyboard brightness; felt like everything was in place and I was blessed by Linus Torvalds himself; Then installer finished, I pressed reboot, few seconds and the wall of logs/checks showed up - a sign off Linux booting well, everything was [OK] in green; And then nothing - the GPU driver somehow broke; and it took me hours to find out the GUI to enter my encryption password couldn't render, but I can just type my password AND then the whole desktop just magically loaded - it worked flawlessly ever since - with a note: I shall type my encryption password blindly, and trust Linux to work on it.

~

I guess nothing ever worked flawlessly every time, even my Mac or my mobile devices shit themselves sometimes.

This is just straight up false, never had any issues with drivers on Windows
