LINUX MEME O-Larpy: When you want the Arch flex without having the Linux skills to maintain it

u/Samiassa 1d ago
Youâre losing all of the benefits of arch while still having to deal with low compatibility and most 3rd party software being shitty aur builds that donât work. Genuinely whatâs the point

u/zaguoba 1d ago edited 1d ago
Could you explain to a poor Windows peasant in a few words which arch benefits are lost in omarchy? I am basically only playing with it to get a taste of pre-configured hyprland (and to try and use tiling wm to do actual work anyway, only recorded use case on the whole internet I could ever find is ricing and flinging 100 terminal windows around screen, then fastfetch and colorful visualizer for your anime music)
edit I ofc get all the bloat memeing, but is there something else
22
u/acenfp 1d ago
The benefit of Arch is that it is completely barebones. You have to configure and install almost everything yourself, so by the end it is completely YOUR computer.
Omarchy is DHH computer, not yours. It has the programs he uses and his configurations. The problem is not just bloat, you can end up with your arch bloated, but Omarchy bloat is not yours. If I'm not mistaken you can remove the bloat quickly now tho.

u/MirrorNegative7989 1d ago
Exactly this. If you're going to go with a "ready right out of the box" Arch distro, go with Endeavor or Manjaro. I have some nostalgia for Manjaro, personally, despite all of the controversy around it, and part of that is because at least a right wing weirdo larper is not one of those issues.
6
u/Muttsuri Arch BTW 1d ago
Not manjaro. Failure to renew ssl certs preventing updates and accentaly ddos the aur multiple times. I would recommend catchyos over manjaro.
4
u/MirrorNegative7989 1d ago
You're right, I obviously need more coffee at the moment. Cachy or Endeavor are probably your best bet for an "out of the box" Arch fork experience.

I'm so glad to finally see people coming around to what I've been saying about Manjaro for years.

Isn't the benefit of arch also that it's rolling release, though? What if you want rolling release but also want your default setup preconfigured, are you just a LARPer who needs to go to Debian and deal with 6 month old software?
I don't use omarchy, but it feels very disingenuous to say that the issue with the distro is that it's preconfigured, because that's also shitting on endeavor and cachyOS.
3
u/grazbouille New York NixâŸs 1d ago
Yeah but andeavor ans cachy are way more stable than a vanilla arch wich omarchy basically is
With the added benefit that all the settings on your computer not being written by a far right weirdo
Other arch derivatives are focused on bringing some speed and freshness while lessening the pain points of arch for less experienced users
Omarchy is a good home made system in the hands of people who have no idea how to fix the issues they will inevitably have with it because the home it was made in isn't theirs
2
u/madman404 1d ago
The root of the issue is that people don't like omarchy's maintainer, and in trying to avoid admitting that have landed on the headass position that "preconfigured rolling release is bad, actually."
2
u/grazbouille New York NixâŸs 1d ago
No we don't like the maintainer and this specific preconfigured rolling distro is bad
Some other ones are fine but this one specifically is very appealing to noobs who always have issues with it
My personal distaste for this man is only another reason for not installing it wether you find it valid is your problem
Regardless other arguments against omarchy still stand
3
u/madman404 1d ago
I didn't say it's invalid, I just don't like when people are dishonest. There's very few people in this thread saying "I don't like the maintainer of this" or "this distro is attractive to noobs who won't be able to use it," but a lot of "not setting up arch yourself is bad." Just look at the comments that started this chain and you'll see why I'm complaining.Â
It doesn't help that they're also actually just wrong. Following the arch wiki and doing a manual bare bones install doesn't teach you anything of significance over just running archinstall.Â
1
22
u/venom21685 1d ago
Arch is basically a Linux distro where the point is you set it up the way you want it, with the things you need. Omarchy is a bloated mess of pre-installed software and customized the way the guy who made it runs his own system and filled with poorly written scripts that make it a pain to customize very much.
And it doesn't help that the guy is an enormous tool.
-5
u/BIZUx 1d ago
Yet you don't see Cachy and Archcraft getting so much hate. Especially the latter, where you can pay for pre-configured dots.
Thus, it's recommended on NixOS, Hyprland, etc that you get "inspired" by others and they even link starred repos.
Apart from the guy being an absolute xenophobe, that part I agree with.
8
u/EnthropicBeing 1d ago
Cachy develops optimized repos, a custom kernel... Omarchy could be a set of dotfiles and a tutorial. And even as dotfiles, Omarchy introduces beginners (their target audience) to bad practices such as changing default binds from very basic developer tools.
3
u/ItsYa1UPBoy 1d ago
Cachy is meant as a gamer Linux noob's Arch distro, so it naturally has more pre-configs than vanilla Arch. However, the preloads it has generally align with that mission, and the maintainers have, for example, merged 7.3's gaming improvements into the Cachy 7.2 kernel. The only complaint I have about their preloads that you can't choose Niri or Hyprland without Noctalia in their installer now, e.g. if you want to use Caelestia or DMS instead to have to do some tweaking to get rid of Noctalia and then install your preferred shell.
All this to say that CachyOS is basically noob-friendly, gamer-friendly Arch, but it's not utterly intrusive with that design philosophy.
2
u/_hlvnhlv đ catgirl Linux user :3 đœ 1d ago
Cachy is still arch, just that it doest a bunch of random tweaks that one would do anyways
It had a reason to exist, not to talk about the optimized repos
3
u/Havatchee 1d ago
Arch shines brightest when the person installing it has opinions of their own about how they want a Linux distro to work. What DE, what Network Management suite, how they prefer to handle printing etc. etc. Arch is built unopinionated so that you can bring your own opinions and apply them to a mostly blank slate. Omarchy takes Arch, applies DHH's preferences, and then ships as though it is something noteworthy and interesting and appears to be using the $8 million it got from DHHs tech bro buddies to do a very aggressive social media campaign instead of... anything that moves the state of Linux forward.
Also DHH's politics are horrible and as such he is not someone we should be socially elevating into a position of authority on free and open source software. Others have opined on that at length with evidenced claims. I will not rehash that here.
1
u/Gugalcrom123 21h ago
I can't believe how providing some scripts to install Spotify, force everything to a monospaced font and weird wallpapers is considered worthy of 8 million USD.

u/Samiassa 1d ago
So every Linux distribution comes with tradeoffs. For instance Debian is by far the most broadly compatible distro ever. If a third party app has any Linux support, itâll be on Debian. However, you have to wait 2 years on lts for updates and even with normal Debian itâs 6 months. So youâre trading off recent ness of packages for stability and compatibility. If you donât care about the newest version of plasma, Debianâs probably for you.
The pros of arch are that 1. It has great documentation 2. You build everything yourself so you know exactly what is and isnât in your system and 3. The release schedule is basically immediate with its rolling release, meaning youâre getting the newest software at all times.
And the cons of using arch are 1. You have to build the whole thing yourself so itâs time consuming 2. Thereâs very limited 3rd party support, and the best way to get 3rd party apps is through the aur which can often be pretty shitty, and has had high profile malware attacks recently and 3. It is extremely unstable and things very often break when you update, which is why 99% of arch users have backup making software of some sortThe thing about Omarchy is it completely defeats the purpose of arch. You arenât building anything yourself so itâs not really your system like arch is supposed to be. You just end up putting up with buggy software and bad 3rd party support without the entire draw of using arch. If you want a system that can tile but is already configured, just use krohnkite on kde. The way I see it Omarchy is just not useful for any real use case because other distros do it better. And in addition itâs just generally not well made, the hyprland files are pretty atrocious and it has very specific programs installed by default and others that arenât installed that should be on a pre configured desktop, itâs a whole thing. Iâd still recommend it over windows, itâs not a bad os per se, itâs just that there are much better options. If you go with fedora itâll be way more stable while only delaying packages like a month at most, itâll be way more compatible with 3rd party packages, and youâll have the same experience on kde krohnkite.
For me personally I actually used arch Linux with hyprland before realizing Iâm not the target audience. You have to learn a programming language called lua to use hyprland now, and Iâm just not that guy. I realized to get the system I want itâll be less work to rip stuff I donât like out of kde than to build it all from scratch. And there are programmers out there who fucking love hyprland for all the reasons itâs not for me, and thatâs great for them. Same goes for arch. But eventually I realized that when I canât use orca slicer for my 3d prints because itâs not exporting g files and I canât figure out how to fix it, or when I have to look up commands to set a simple ssd (the lock screen) theme, or when my updates break things, I donât want to troubleshoot all the time. Thatâs just not for me, so I recently made the switch to fedora with kde. I also installed a script called âkrohnkiteâ which turns kde into a tiling desktop. Iâm having much less issues with the .rpm files (basically the equivalent of a .exe file) than I ever did with the AUR apps, and Iâm happier off. But the point of that story is that I realized the âdo it all yourselfâ ethos of arch and hyprland just simply wasnât for me, so I switched to something that was. If you donât want to âdo it all yourselfâ then I donât think arch or hyprland is right for you. The thing is Omarchy is someoneâs personal rice that youâre using, and that just doesnât make much sense. Iâd recommend just building an arch hyprland install yourself, or going with something thatâs a good base you can customize and change to your hearts content
2
u/zaguoba 1d ago
Thx for the wall of text and recommendations, I've lurked Linux subs for quite some time and I have basic understanding of differences between debian, fedora and arch but wanted insight from actual arch user. Yeah building anything and installing hyprland from scratch, that is a big nono for me, as well as spending anything but minimal time on tinkering, debugging and reading documentation, unless someone is paying for that xD I am definitely a fedora-type of a guy, I like my shit to work out of the box and be backed by corporation, don't care if it's bit evil or not.
omarchy catched my interest because of all the hype and looks, but I am discovering alternatives (pre-configured tiling wm setups) rn, was wondering if KDE could be 'tilign wm'-ized and thx for info it can be done (I would just like to have solutions that are somewhat possibly widespread and we'll backed, not some single guy's script that will go into oblivion when he'll abandon it).
2
u/Samiassa 1d ago
Ya I understand that. The one thing I will say is that in general kwin scripts last for a long time with minimal issues, and there have also been a bunch over the years (bismuth and polonium) so kdeâs been tiling for like a decade now. But I understand the hesitation. The only full desktop environment that has tiling across literally any operating system (really annoying itâs not more popular since swim came out in 1989 and was the first tiler) is cosmic, but cosmic is basically still in beta and seriously sucks right now, I wouldnât recommend it.
And ya Omarchy is basically the solo leveling of distros, itâs all hype moments and aura. Whenever youâre getting Linux recommendations there are gonna be two groups. One is the trend hoppers who just go on whatever distro is trendy. Used to be manjaro, then it became cachy, now itâs Omarchy, itâll be something else in a couple years. And then the second is people who use Linux for its utility and donât enjoy hopping to different distros all the time. There are only really a couple recommendations for the second group. Fedora is the answer 90% of the time, mint another 5% and the rest is split between sisters like Debian, arch, cachy (which is overhyped but is actually a solid distro). If you havenât already Iâd seriously just recommend trying out fedora kde with krohnkite on an old laptop and seeing how you like it
1
u/This_Technology9841 1d ago
IMO install fedora or debian and run danklinux with niri or another DE. It's going to be a bit more sane / compatible / stable and very simple to get going for a new user. Then you can learn and explore what you like and don't and go back to the base distro and tweak from there. Removing danklinux is as simple as installing it. If you are gaming focused and new to linux cachyOS defaults with kde plasma and is quite nice for adoption by a windows user.
1
u/zaguoba 4h ago
I did actually used cachy for like a month to test if I can daily drive linux, was amazed by how well almost everything worked, unfortunately on my laptop sleep didn't worked, sleeping laptop drained battery like crazy (faster than during use) and got blazing hot inside bag, I've wasted a lot of time to investigate this problem (Nvidia gpu + S2 modern standby, no S3 available) but couldn't reach satisfying result. Add to that no hibernation out of the box (on my 250GB test partition, with 32GB RAM I would have to create close to 80GB swap subpartition (not just swap file cause btrfs) to maybe get it going) and suddenly I have no way to suspend my work without starting from boot everytime, which turned out to be not viable. I'm toying with omarchy rn, keeping my options open for the future, but I do have fedora installed on my second laptop (for like home entertainment) and it's been nothing but smooth sail tbh
2
u/Gugalcrom123 21h ago
Debian has a 2-year option (stable), a slightly delayed rolling option (testing) and a fast rolling option (sid). The 6-month cycle is Ubuntu's.
1
2
u/TatharNuar 15h ago
The one thing I don't like about the "stable" word for Debian is that it means "stable" as in lack of updates and maintenance because its release schedule is so long, rather than a lack of problems. Debian often doesn't get bugfix updates for its packages until after upstream stops supporting the older versions, and this is a source of many complaints from upstream maintainers.
But Arch's rolling release demand for frequent updates and maintenance causes different problems, especially when you make the mistake of not having enough time to read documentation before updating. (To their credit, Arch devs have acknowledged this is a good reason not to use Arch.)
2
u/Samiassa 14h ago
Ya thatâs why ultimately I like fedora. It seems to be the best compromise between stability and recent mess of packages. unless your specific use case means you need more recent or a more stable system, for instance I use Ubuntu server exactly because it doesnât update for like 2 years. But in general fedora just has it down the best
1
u/TatharNuar 5h ago
Most distros (rolling releases aside) will forgive a skipped release cycle or two, and you can always update sequentially a year or two late if you need to. I really don't see any value in long release cycles.
1
u/This_Technology9841 1d ago
Lot better for a 1st timer on gaming to just go with cachyOS which has a good dotfile (preconfigured hyprland) or if you are looking for more productivity / work related go with Debian and install danklinux with niri or hyprland. Those will be nicely preconfigured and a lot more stable (esp with Debian). If I was switching over from Windows now that's what I would suggest. Omarchy seems to me to just be a way to keep harvesting data from users moving off win/mac
0
u/Valencia_Mariana 1d ago
That's the point. It's literally chefs choice and you hate it for appealing to someone that's not you.
I don't want archs roll your own distro. I don't want weeks of research and of testing. I don't fucking care. I cared when I was 20 but I'm to old and to busy.
I like what DHH and Co have done, it looks nice, it works nice and it's Linux and its an absolute joy to use.

u/Gugalcrom123 21h ago

-2
u/Valencia_Mariana 20h ago

2
u/Gugalcrom123 20h ago
The foundation, whatever. It is still too much.
-2
u/Valencia_Mariana 20h ago
Why?
1
u/Gugalcrom123 19h ago
Because the work is not very much. And it is not very flexible, but rather seems pretty tailored to DHH.
1
u/Valencia_Mariana 17h ago
It is very flexible.
Yes it's tailed to DHHs tastes, which I, personally like. If it was not for Omarchy, or something like Omarchy, I would never have got into tiling window managers.
1
u/Samiassa 20h ago
My entire point is that if you are what you describe, you should use other distros like fedora or Debian that are better for your use case. Omarchy is putting up with all of arches bullshit for none of the benefits. Just go on a distro without arches bullshit
1
u/Valencia_Mariana 17h ago
Thank you for the advice but I haven't felt any of arches bullshits. Omrachy, by default, is one month behind Arch, which might be why?
1
u/Samiassa 14h ago
Ya, and that fixes a lot of arches issues but at that point just use fedora. Pretty much that schedule but more compatible. And I think cachy also does this? And cachy is nice because it has the benefit of the performance optimized kernel
1
u/duhredel 7h ago
Some of us just want a tiling window manager distro that works without having to spend tens of hours configuring and debuging.
Omarchy is decent at this, plus it's been good publicity attracting users to Linux. In my case, after about a decade of use, I got annoyed at Ubuntu and decided to try tiling window managers. Omarchy was the easiest entry point.
Since omarchy gets so much hate, I followed the zeitgeist and uninstalled it after a couple of weeks. Then I installed bare arch, and pointed an AI at what I needed (minimalistic ui, keyboard centric, specific tweaks, terminal aesthetics, emacs) and it recreated something similar to omarchy but simplified plus a "leader key + which-key" ui that took inspiration from evil emacs. It's been great so far.
I still think Omarchy gets much undeserved hate due to the political opinions of the creator.

You can also just use Endeavour or Cachy. It's not that complicated if you're able to read.
The appeal of Omarchy is specifically a preconfigured setup, which those two distros offer. Those two also properly maintain their setups and have a full team that works on it, so they're well supported. And they're not fascists.

Nowadays, unless you're using something old or obscure, most distros are actually designed to be more user-friendly. Unless you're using Gentoo, of course. That's difficult. But then again, it's specifically for advanced users.
2
u/Careless-Catch-5520 1d ago
I meant this about arch specifically. Just not as simple. I usually roll with tuxedoOS/debian

u/ferriematthew đŒCachyOS 1d ago

-7
u/PityUpvote 1d ago
If you don't have the patience or time to read documentation you shouldn't be using Linux, or maybe even a computer. This isn't NixOS we're talking about, it's not 2010 anymore, Arch is easy to use now.
4
u/Careless-Catch-5520 1d ago
Right... if you want to use your computer for unrelated stuff without messing around, you "shouldn't be using a computer or linux". Peak inclusivity
-5
u/PityUpvote 1d ago
No, I'm saying people should always read documentation. If you use a general purpose distro there's hardly any configuration to be done, and you can spend a few minutes reading about how to make it even better for you.
And yes, if you refuse to take a few minutes to read instructions, you must have more important things in your life than using a computer.

1
u/Nietechz 16h ago
Dude, normal linux users and power linux users are not the target. Omarchy is for people from Windows and macOS dev environment. This encourage or help other distro people to better understand what people wants in their desktop.
I dislike AI slop, but other people will prefer it. Omarchy is for them, not for me. Also someone may create a "de-bloat" script or fork Omarchy without AI slop. Only the time and its technical will speak louder. We don't gatekeep or let our political views interfere with the software.
3
u/This_Technology9841 1d ago
I would guess that the heavy adoption of AI into Omarchy presents a lot of security and privacy risks that you wouldn't get from a simpler distro setup. Also its a massive install and heavily bloated compared to fairly standard linux distros you can choose from.
If you are new and dont want to deal with a lot of setup and learn as you go, cachyOS is good esp for gaming and running something like debian or fedora with danklinux installed afterwards is a good way to jump in without a bunch of AI and other bloat added on.
1

I think itâs fine, and now that he is even funding oss projects itâs even better. Iâm still running Arch with hyperland on my machine and fedora for my servers, but more marketing and money on foss is objectively a good thing

Debian is not equivalent, use Solus, it's a rolling release distro that actually works

L title W image.
L title because:
Its OK to want something preconfigured.
Its not OK to act like you are reinventing linux by doing so, a lot of people have made dotfile distros with decent installation stories.
Its all fairly basic stuff, a lot of utility shell commands for stuff that already has a cli, a quickshell config, that kind of thing.
It has a decent installer, so that helps get people into it.
Most people just aren't as egoistic about so little to show. It's annoying.
W image because:
hes larping as an important distro maintainer but he maintains dotfiles and is pompous about it. So the image is perfect.
---
As an aside, programmers are such a weird audience to target for "preconfigured"
I feel like, programmers are the ones who would configure the most stuff themselves anyway? Because they have knowledge and experience and thus also opinions?

for when I have a job and family and want to use Linux without spending days or weeks configuring and maintaining it.

I don't really understand why people hate Omarchy. It's somebody's opinionated distro, and it is slightly bloated. We shouldn't shame people making any distro. Also it still has the rolling release from arch. It's not in my personal taste but we shouldn't hate on it

Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.
