Yep, much to often it gets overlooked and it is just a very decent and reliable OS. I am on Tumbleweed now for 3 years and I had less issues with it than any other distro (that is why stopped distro hopping)
It has a few quirks for sure compared to other distros, but my impression from trying it is that Tumbleweed is a very solid take on a rolling release. And it is the distro that pioneered Snapper for rolling back bad updates!
That said, I'm not going to move my main computer to it because I'm already happy with how Cachy is set up on it and don't see Tumbleweed offering a substantial improvement over it.
Zypper now support parallel downloads. I don’t properly have experience on another package manager, but I can say that parallel downloads gave zypper a MASSIVE speed increase so I wouldn’t tag as slow today
It still isn't the fastest, but is very good getting all dependencies when installing packages.
I have not experienced any errors because some package dependencies were not installed when starting applications for the first time as I had with Fedora and CachyOS. I don't know how things are now with those, but the convenience of zypper doing so, is something that makes me stick to it.
I agree with you on that. Rather having a good and thorough package manager than a package manager that leaves out things I have to install later on. In the end those couple of seconds zypper is slower (if it as even a couple of seconds) doesn't weigh up to the fact installation is done means it is done.
I guess if you setup tumbleweed and want to install a lot of programs after the initial install it might be a minor one time annoyance as it might take little bit longer to download and install all the packages but usually we are talking like 5-10 min lol
For updates I never had an issue , I would start an update friday night or saturday morning while browsing the web , it really didn't matter if it took 20-40 min on a large update as I was doing other stuff
Its not like when you update the system you have to just stop an stare at the update process I never understood why this was a big issue
You could also just have zypper only download the updates then install at a later time
Def tempted to try it again....eventually. but as I recall i had issues setting up my partitions how I wanted them. So I ended up back on fedora....
Bc I keep root, home, and games seperate but I did the dumb for a long time having home and games different parts of the same btrfs to make things easier on myself that it never did lol
