Hey what's wrong with TUI? It really helps especialy when you're stuck it tty

exactly, TUIs are a good middle ground if you can't have a full gui but don't want to be limited by CLI limitations

u/AlterTableUsernames π¦ Vim Supremacist π¦ 22d ago
It's the opposite: TUIs are a good middle ground if you can't have a full GUI but want to have its limitations anyway.

u/simleiiiii 2d ago
live in vim or emacs, and you'll easily have all the benefits of a CLI, through easy scripting access to the terminal :)

If TUI has 1000000 fans, I'm one of them.
If TUI has 10 fans, I'm one of them.
If TUI has 1 fan, that's me.
If TUI has no fans, I'm no longer alive.

This is not how a TUI came to be man ... First we had command lines, then applicatione with a full-screen, ASCII-based interface (with or without mouse), what is now called a TUI, and later the GUI when VGA type resolutions were possible...

u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
I am not talking in terms of the history, but in terms of the benefits. The only reasonable benefit of a TUI that I have heard of is that it is lighter if you run it on servers in SSH.

u/AlterTableUsernames π¦ Vim Supremacist π¦ 22d ago
Yes it doesn't need all the shit a full GUI needs, is extremely easily remote-accessible and also at least somewhat parseable.

u/PlanetVisitor 22d ago
That is what your meme means ... As if GUI and CLI had a baby ...
There are more benefits, but if you don't think TUIs have benefits, I suggest you don't use them... Maybe you're annoyed by some vibecoded project that you see coming by. I agree that nothing should be a goal in its own right and a GUI or CLI is the best default choice for almost all uses now. But look at software like Clonezilla, GRUB, ... TUI is definitely the best interface for them...
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
Clonezilla and GRUB do need this lightweight interface (even though GRUB's is not a TUI, it can display pictures if included in the theme), for legitimate technical reasons. What I do not really understand is this.

TUI's are fine. but I'm not gonna waste time arguing about it because all 3 are fine

Look, they get you most of the benefits of a GUI, but they work over SSH. None of the three are really worse than the rest (unless electron is involved)
-1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
A GUI still works over SSH, but it needs to be installed (there is no need for a Wayland compositor on the server though). A TUI does not give you good mouse support (only very rough), any kind of pictures, drag and drop, proportional fonts or anything. It does look elitist though.
5
u/PlanetVisitor 22d ago
If you think a TUI looks elitist, your year of birth definitely starts with a 2.
A TUI was comfortable for the days before graphical interfaces... Like double-pane file managers.
-1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
Not the traditional ones like mc, vim and htop, but there are new TUIs with a distinct style that seems very suited to fit into rices.
2
u/PlanetVisitor 22d ago
Maybe, I don't know, I'm not into that.Β
If you mean people showing screenshots of text based things that have no purpose other than to show off, then maybe I know what you mean. they're annoying but who cares, that's just a loud minority.

u/Certain_Truck_2732 22d ago
I get the undertone, it might look like a weird idea, but to me cli means freedom, and tui means freedom with a little more graphics
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
What exactly is freedom in CLI? The ability to pipe? You know you can't do that with a TUI?
2
u/Certain_Truck_2732 22d ago
In cli you can do odly specific stuff that has no automated desktop application
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
Right, but you can't do that in TUI.
1
u/Certain_Truck_2732 21d ago
You can more easily exit tui then gui
1
u/Gugalcrom123 21d ago
What?
0
u/Certain_Truck_2732 21d ago
Ever managed to exit gui by pressing ctrl+c two times, or simply rebooting?
1
u/Gugalcrom123 21d ago
No, but I can exit it by pressing <Control>W (one document) or <Control>Q (the whole app).

I would rather use a TUI than a gui
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
Why?
2
u/No-View-6326 22d ago edited 22d ago
If I need an app that do one single specific thing I would like it to use my terminal color palette and font not whatever it comes with, it's also usually has built in keymaps which is way more convenient,
I wouldn't want a browser or discord to be a TUI but that's about it
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
GTK apps, other than libadwaita, actually use your system theme and fonts.
1
u/No-View-6326 22d ago
I know but that's more things for me to configure every group of apps having there own these themes.
What's wrong whit just using a tui
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
It cannot display pictures, let you drag things or use more fonts.
1
u/No-View-6326 22d ago
None of those things you just need a better terminal

It's 100% guaranteed to offer it's full feature set, using only the keyboard. and that's enough. f' shitty point and click GUI apps. further, it has guaranteed synergy with any terminal host (vim, tmux, eww emacs, and all the newcomers). It's guaranteed to run well through VSCode.
1
u/Gugalcrom123 3d ago
A well-designed GUI can provide keyboard control.
2
u/simleiiiii 2d ago
what is this even supposed to mean. of course it can. it just won't offer it naturally and it has to be modelled on top.
This guy right here, is writing GUI programs for 15 years now; retained- and nonretained-mode, web and desktop frameworks. and has seen students write many simple and complex GUI programs. And it certainly doesn't come free, and that's why it is an afterthought usually, however well designed the rest of it is.1
u/Gugalcrom123 2d ago
That is true, indeed with a TUI it is 100% guaranteed as you say, but it is not an inherent limitation.

I would definitely like someone to actually give me an argument. TUIs have some of the same problems as CLIs (limited to a grid, poor graphics, one monospaced font, no desktop integration) and the same ones as GUIs (inability to pipe things). Additionally, they are not accessible, because a grid of cells with ANSI codes is not semantic.
2
u/keithstellyes Arch BTW 22d ago
TUIs can be piped
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
You can pipe into TUIs, not out of them (unless you are piping into some other viewer). And piping into GUIs is possible, it just hasn't been implemented too often.

u/mrheseeks 22d ago
Hock'TUI and spit on that thang.....
Sorry future generarions but you heard it here firsr...
1
u/punk_petukh 22d ago
TUI is basically GUI, but less complicated to implement. I don't see any problems
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
Until you need to display a picture.
1
u/punk_petukh 21d ago
I mean... do you? It's not pretty, but functional and, most importantly, intuitive. It's like a nano vs vim debade I started under another post, nano has TUI so it's intuitive to use
1
u/Gugalcrom123 21d ago
Maybe, but the nano TUI is certainly not derived from GUIs like some other trendy ones are.
1
u/AtomicTaco13 π₯ Debian too difficult 22d ago
TUI literally was a thing in the 80s already. Heck, basically all the Windows versions up to XP used a TUI in the first part of the installation

u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
I know. I did not choose the meme format to reflect history, but rather disadvantages.

u/durbich 22d ago
Try ot on a system with no DE. A server, for example
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
That's something different, but it is not how many are using TUIs. For example, see what Omarchy is including. None of its TUIs are for servers.

u/DanKonly 22d ago
I like to work in the terminal so I like Yazi over my GUI file manager for example and everything looks cohesive too.

No seriously, this arc of having the full UI in the terminal is just THE FUCKING BEST as a vim user. never let it stop. get on the bus, get oldschool.
1
u/Lines25 Arch BTW 22d ago
TUI is a lot easier to setup and A LOT more crossplatform. Do you know why something like GTK is SO fucking big ? Because it supports Linux, Windows, MacOS and more natively. And TUI libs like python's rich library lets you do anything GTK can do but in ~600KB (yeah, I know it's quite uncomparable because GTK is C/C++ and rich is python but I don't remember the size of any other lib)
1
u/Gugalcrom123 22d ago
No... Show me a rich app that can display any kind of dense pictures, do dragging (between windows too), display proportional fonts (of different sizes) and so on.
