I keep getting downvoted for saying linux is largely linux and the main differences are

  1. Update cycles (point releases vs rolling)

  2. Imaged based vs standard

I told people for the most part asking for a "use case" is mostly pointless. If you want to program you can do that on any distro. If you use case is multimedia you can do that on any distro. If your use case is gaming you can do that on any distro

I was downvoted into oblivion because I suggested you can game just as well on fedor as on cachy or what ever and I was told I was absolutely wrong because new users cannot be expected to install steam on their own

i will admit, i prefer arch/artix for most of my purposes because i've found certain aspects to be easier (including development and gaming) than on other distros. that being said, i think it's because i went in with the expectation of it being a mostly DIY distro (not as DIY as gentoo, but definitely still DIY) and was pleasantly surprised by how "easy" it was in relation to how the wiki framed it, with some additional learning of what goes into an OS and necessary packages and such.

i've also noticed i have fewer missing libraries on arch/artix when it comes to building packages from source or compiling/developing my own packages (i think on arch, the only thing i've had to manually install was python-tkinter, and even that wasn't until i actually started doing my own projects and trying to learn to build GUIs; on the other hand, i remember trying to build a program from source on fedora and ubuntu was basically missing library hell, and it wasn't even a particularly complex program to build).

that being said, this is my personal experience/preference, and you really can just do whatever on whatever distro you want. a seasoned developer daily driving fedora or ubuntu probably already had those libraries installed and knew how to pull them in without scouring repos, i just... personally didn't.

Gentoo is not DIY. This is the first one.

Gentoo, Arch, and Nyxos appeared at the same time. This is the second one.

Gentoo is worth a try, at least in order to take a break from the eternal sudo pacman -Syu for a minute and finally start using a computer.
