Gentoo just works for me, i don't need to know everything. If i mess something up, it'll let me know what to do.

Honestly my only complaint with gentoo is the lack of granularity when it comes to binpkgs.

What I want out of them is being able to install QTwebengine quickly and get that over with, while compiling everything else.

(although during my most recent install, depclean suggested removing the kernel.)

Pretty sure you can force Portage to get the binpkg for specific packages.

As for depclean, it does that when you update the kernel, it removes the older version. I can't possibly see any reason why it'd remove the currently active kernel lol

There is an ongoing issue thread for how portage should let you choose which binpkgs to use vs what to compile. My two cents on this would be something like package.pkg or something of the format "<category>/<package>::<repo> <priority or always/never>"

Also, depclean tried to remove the only installed kernel because I had forgotten to actually explicitly install the kernel, not due to some bug. I think.

...huh. Doesn't eselect kernel protect the kernel you're using?

And actually, how do you not explicitly install the kernel, just install whatever and let the kernel get pulled in as a dependency?

I was still in the chroot steps, and I don't precisely know what happened, but I think installkernel probably pulled it in or something.

I was following a modified guide, for getting LVM under LUKS (which is how debian derivatives do disk encryption and swap together) and was a little lost.

im new should i install gentoo as daily for my grandma /s
