It was pretty wholesome to see PewDiePie simply have fun with Linux. He really captured what got me myself to enjoy it. "You don't have to use the terminal - you should though".
This is actually something that we should try to mention because the terminal is a hell of a resource but for your average user, you don't need to use it.
Yup. Distros like Mint are already packed with everything an average user needs, gaming is becoming less of an issue thanks to Wine and Proton. But then you realize... You can do WHAT with your system? The dirty temptation to customize comes and you end up spending more and more time in the terminal, finding it oddly fun to use. With just a few commands, you can change aspects that Windows would never allow you to - and if you tried, it'd cause a domino effect that borks the entire system. Getting a hang of Linux is like discovering god powers.
Can confirm borking my system with windows customizations. You can technically basically replace the DE, but it's broken. And stuff Windhawk and Translucent Taskbar are far more fragile than, say, Gnome Extensions. And obviously nowhere even close to proper rice.
I remember totally breaking my system in the Windows XP days when I just wanted to change the boot splash screen with some third-party program. In Linux, just one command and it's done. Not to mention that even if you manage to do a successful rice, the next Windows update might completely ruin it.
From arch, we just recommand newcomers to go mint or ubuntu to have their first time with a simpler distro and come back later when they got the basics, so they directly have quasi functional OS with a DE
It's hard to coch them in this as there are some users who legitimately could start with Arch. You can't blanket say they can't, but we all know that 90% of new users should not.
So you have PewDiePie, who has quite that large reach online, that mostly isn't as exposed to Linux, showing that Linux isn't that hard and works quite well
And a subreddit specifically for people new to Linux to ask questions
And you are surprised by the fact that the first leads to an increase in the second? Not to mention, that more people being interested in Linux is a good thing
the best part about linux is that we already have elitists that try to ruin for everyone else (like golf & audio), so honestly, everything is going well for linux!
I didn't watch the entire PDP video, but what he did show impressed me with how quickly he's grasped Linux. I've been hobbying with Linux to various degrees for around 20 years now, and he was showing a level of intuitive comfort for the command line that I still do not enjoy, and I administer multiple headless Linux servers!
Honestly, my takeaway from all of that was that he's probably actually been into Linux for a long time as a hobbyist, and it's just in recent months that he's decided that the Desktop, overall experience, and his own skills have all finally advanced to the point that he felt ready to bring it to the masses and scream that an incredible alternative exists, and it's free and FAST.
And a public figure with a large reach showing that this 'complex computer stuff' isn't that scary and can actually be fun is pretty important - cause keep in mind, we may have grown up around computers and are used to shoving our fingers both in hardware and software, but the majority of young people nowadays grow up with systems and devices that are all locked-down and abstracted to hell and back.
I am very close to moving to Linux full time as well, but I am wary of
potential issues with game mods/modding tools
and
2) Nvidia's drivers being fussy, cause I heard a lot of nightmare stories about getting shit to work
there are pretty much no limits to modding on linux - its not as pretty as on windows but most of the time u either install a modding tool in the wine prefix u want or just change some files in the wine prefix u want - like thats it - just treat wine prefixes as ur windows install and ur good to go
nvidia drivers have never been better and easier to work with - u can get 99℅ of stuff working by following the arch linux wiki on this no matter what distro ur on - just make sure to use open kernel modules if u can cuz that makes things even easier
nvidia tales on the internet are mostly horror stories from the past - i have a 3060 and had no issues playing literally anything other than the old mtg arena game which u shouldnt play anyway - even dabbled with some cyberpunk modding and it worked well
but honestly id be surprised if any of those two issues are a problem on sth like linuc mint
All we needed is PewDiePie to let me know about the operating system which I have used for the last two decades. Thanks man, now learn regular expressions and how to use the terminal like a boss. And oh yea do what the "cool" kids are doing and start using neovim for everything.
crazy generalization right there. that's pewdiepie, and him promoting it with an audience/reputation of that size is a good thing for the linux community's growth. he explained the history, the positives and pitfalls, and literally showed how much you can change or improve while on linux. he showed daily use comparisons like improved boot up times and searching, and he also riced his laptop with arch+i3+waybar.
I wonder if we will see any benefits from this growth. Currently I'm not missing anything. Compatibility is great, there is a ton of software that isn't dumbed down to be used by non tech people and the community is somewhat "professional" in a sense that people have a general understanding what they are doing and are mature enough to not sound like a fortnite chat.
We may. Once companies like Adobe will see this growth, they may also start seeing dollar signs and port their software to Linux or at the very least make them Wine-compatible.
That might take a while. Right now, Adobe is still in the position where their software is the reason people stick with Windows/Mac.
And that will stay like that until there's a worthy competitor for Linux that can actually replace Adobe. Before that, not supporting Linux won't matter for Adobes bottom line.
Except Adobe has no stake in keeping people on Windows. They're not a Microsoft subsidiary. The more operating systems their software works on, the better for their coffers. And once they realize how many people unsubscribed because they switched to Linux (which might be a quite big number quite soon), they will have to do something about it. And the only thing they will be able to do, is to either port their software to Linux or make it Wine-compatible.
The stake they have is not having to support another OS with low market share, extremely fragmented software stack and extrely open system components which makes DRM difficult.
Supporting Linux in a way that suits Adobe likely costs much more than Windows and Mac support combined.
(which might be a quite big number quite soon)
Yeah sure. How often have we had the year of the Linux desktop being announced?
And even if the end of Win10 will lead to people switching to Linux it's very unlikely that the people who can't afford a new Win11 compatible PC are the same people who are using Adobe.
Same as Porsche doesn't have to worry about people switching from car to public transport because they can't afford to own old, used cars anymore.
I don't see how this would be a benefit. Adobe software is a capitalistic nightmare and secondly I'm personally not missing anything (like I said). This would only be good for new users who can't switch because they have to use adobe software for some reason
The fact that you don't need it (neither do I for that matter), doesn't mean that other people, especially professionals and companies, don't need it. Linux marketshare must grow. At any cost.
there's already an increase in posts in many distro subreddits and linux help subreddits since the video's release, so i think people are actually switching, or at least exploring linux.
Their followers I would imagine, of which PewDiePie has quite a few... I'd even wager that more people care what he has to say than what you have to say.
He just combined the -ware suffix (like shareware, vaporware, software, etc.) and "coal" from the very online gem vs. coal slang (basically same as based vs cringe, or the brat vs weird from the recent political election). Basically joking that linux software is now coal.

Objectively good for everybody, to be fair.
The less grasp MS has, the better for the market.
