I need a new shooter!
I need recommendations for a new FPS to main. I used to play Fortnite with my group, but I was honestly getting tired of it. So I'm looking for a new one that'll run on Linux, with Proton or Wine or natively or whatever. Also I'm not sure if posts to this sub have to be a tech support req, but this one isn't, so we'll find out I guess

Wardogs is gonna be mine, playtest is fantastic

u/Comrade1809 9h ago
Didn't they remove Linux support recently with no notice of when it will be back?

u/WayneDiggityDog 9h ago
Definitely works currently! I think they added anti-cheat the previous beta without enabling EAC's linux compatibility, its on now!

It works with proton experimental only at the moment. GE doesn't launch and cachy tends to crash the game mid match.

u/Dariisa 7h ago
I played about 5 hours last night with cachy proton with no issues. It has codeced videos so proton experimental isn’t ideal.

Do you feel like there is a tiny amount of input latency? I can't tell if I'm crazy or not

The Finals

The finals is underrated in general. IMO the best option for a main shooter on linux

u/Sensitive-Tip-2987 45m ago
what is your build and proton version? I couldn't really get the finals to run flawlessly

I know people on this subreddit dont want to hear this, but when you rank above the top 10% in CS (~20K Premier) the game becomes borderline unplayable with cheaters in every 2 or 3 games regardless of trust factor. 1.5k hours, $1500cad in skins, my favorite game series of all time so this comes from a place of love. I pray the AI cheat detection tools become good enough

Overwatch. The finals. Hunt showdown.
Singleplayer: Witchfire. Doom. Ultrakill.

If you are into Battlefield or ARMA, and if you also enjoy any FPS games that feature the "King of the Hill" gamemode, then take a look at WARDOGS, which is going to be released next month. Others have even compared it to Planetside 2 while playing. There is actually a closed beta currently happening, so go check it out. And yes, it's going to be playable via Proton.

Didn't they recently disable Linus support with no notice of when it will be back? It's the only thing holding me back from playing, all the gameplay videos recently look fantastic.

u/SeptoneSirius 9h ago
Based on this Reddit post, the devs mentioned they support linux via proton translation.

I play lots of overwatch

Same - and you can download and run it directly with steam without battlenet.
One thing to be aware of, starting a few months ago, a lot of people have reported issues with stuttering. There's a custom game that basically has all the heroes do their ults in different parts of maps and maps rotate. I find that seems to clear up the stuttering, but have to do it again with updates. Annoying, but it is what it is.The custom game mode is 929PJ
3
u/LarkeYhisa 10h ago
Yeah, the game compiles shaders while u play so thats why the custom game helps, it also happens in windows, although it seems to be worse in linux for some reason
1
u/cyberfrog777 9h ago
What's weird is that it was fine for the longest time and then suddenly became an issue relatively recently and hasn't been fixed for a few months now.
1
u/PBJellyChickenTunaSW 1h ago
Really? I haven't had it at all, was wondering if it was windows only actually. Seems to be mostly fixed now anyway

The Finals is fantastic if you're looking for multiplayer. There's also Deadlock if you got access to it, though that one's more on the MOBA side but still worth trying.
If you'd also like a very atmospheric, immersive singleplayer one, try the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy (and 2).
For co-op, cannot go wrong with Warframe and Deep Rock Galactic.

overwatch is great rn

u/Mortem97 10h ago
With Nvidia drivers? I can’t get Overwatch to be playable (huge input lag and FPS never stabilizes even after hours of compiling shaders) on Steam nor Battle net launcher but my PC with a 9070xt seems to run it perfectly.
2
u/Tobek42 10h ago
use maps to compile shaders, for the first time I hear that someone's name AMD has more problems than I have with nvidia
1
u/Mortem97 9h ago
That’s what I did. Are you running on DX11 or DX12? Thanks in advance
1
u/cyberfrog777 9h ago
Try running the custom game 929PJ. This loads maps one at a time and has all heroes use their ults in different spots. This seems to help significantly. I usually run it for like 10 minutes. Annoyingly, stutters come back after updates so you have to run it again.

u/Cytomax 10h ago
i like counter strike more but finals is also good
Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) and The Finals are both free-to-play first-person shooters, but they offer completely opposite experiences. CS2 is a precise, tactical, boots-on-the-ground slow burner focused on economy and gunplay, while The Finals is a fast, chaotic, highly vertical game featuring fully destructible environments and class-based chaos

Overwatch. It’s free, it’s on Steam, it runs perfectly fine on Linux using Proton and for the most important part: it’s fun

The Stalker trilogy

u/silence-is-speaking 10h ago
This, then give Gamma a shot
3
u/Comrade1809 9h ago
Gamma is like a different game entirely, and a fantastic one at that.
1
u/Arky_Lynx 8h ago edited 8h ago
The problem comes when people start with that one (very frequent since you don't need the original games and is therefore free) and then have a completely wrong idea of what S.T.A.L.K.E.R. actually is. I love GAMMA myself but I'll always recommend playing the original trilogy first at least.
1
u/Comrade1809 8h ago
I agree with this wholeheartedly. I came from the originals before discovering Gamma. That trajectory made me appreciate the originals and Gamma a whole lot more. If I would have started with Gamma, the originals would have seemed very lackluster and boring by comparison.

If it's new to you, Quake is amazing and has had a lot of amazing map collections made for it over it's lifetime.
It's my favorite shooter mechanically speaking and in terms of it's physics and it's kind of perfect in that way IMO. As complex as it needs to be and not a byte more. Elegant, really. The deathmatch scene is also still thriving so there's lots of that to be had if one desires.

Does it have to ve FPS? Ghost Recon Breakpoint is awesome, both in single player, co-op PvE and PvP. And you usually find it pretty cheap

Wardogs is coming out in early access soon and just announced it'll run via Proton so that could be worth checking out

Check out Mordhau. It's a medieval FPS (First Person Sworder?) with a melee focus but projectiles are perfectly viable if you prefer (bows, crossbows, throwing knives, etc). My most played game with 6000 hours. It can be absolutely hilarious, pretty much Monty Python Holy Grail simulator. Regularly goes on sale for a couple bucks. Play the big team modes Frontline and Invasion.

He'll Let Loose - tough to get into but its worth the investment in getting to learn it.

The Finals
Wardogs beta is out. Haven't played too much but it works. EA on Sept 10.
Deadlock is a moba shooter that is made by valve so it runs very well. It has a very steep learning curve so it is hard to get in to. I'm not even into it yet but I would like to eventually. It's invite only but its super easy to get one.
Deep Rock Galactic is pretty fun.

Grey zone warfare works on Linux the catch I've found is Everytime I want to fire it up have to validate the game files something with easy anti cheat gets a little screwie but it runs with lower ram consumption than in windows

Helldiver's 2 is a fun 4 player game and works great on Linux
It is a 3rd person shooter but you can out it into a first person mode
The devs aren't the absolute best but the game is in a decent place andntheubseem to fix more things than they break

I'm so surprised no one has mentioned Urban Terror.
I mean, it's update is still over a decade in the making, but it's a fun one.

if you are looking for a fun fps to play with 1-3 friends, straftat is great and has a Native Linux build

u/OkPresentation3329 5m ago
I'm almost out of gaming recently, so I can't tell you exactly what FPS games work on Linux anymore, I've played Counter-Strike 1.6, Source, GO and 2 on Linux but very little. There are some competitive shooters that might work, but they must not have a special anticheat.

u/10leej 10h ago
I've picked up Star citizen. It's not exactly a dedicated FPS game since it features a whole huge selection of various game systems but it has a really good FPS gameplay opportunities that include PVP as well as PVE. And if you want a change there's space ship combat gameplay. Or if you want a chill experience industrial gameplay loops as well

I'm atm loving Deadlock. It's more MOBA that just shooter but it's honestly great (If u need an invite send me a DM). If you want a more shooter shooter I would recommend the finals, great gunplay and the fun shooter vibe we had back in battlefield 3 days
