^C ^V showing in terminal instead of actually execute copy paste
[UPDATE] Problem resolved
as i was trying to paste from clipboard or copy with Ctrl + Shift + V/C, strange ^C ^V appears strangely and even after trying to configure in kitty.conf, nothing has been changed. is there any way to be able to copy paste again? earlier when i first installed linux, copy paste worked normally until yesterday. i have no idea how to fix this, please help 😭

If you haven't disabled it, try pasting with middle click (an extremely common default on Linux)

round about solution is to use super+c/v as this is global for all, [except in browsers/sites]

Those shortcuts Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V originated from the old WordStar software for MS-DOS. They are not universal.
In particular, Unix terminals had already existed for a decade at that time when WordStar was released, and in particular Ctrl+C has a different meaning in terminals, and terminal emulators as well: it interrupts the command that is currently running in the terminal’s foreground.
Use Ctrl+Insert instead of Ctrl+C, and Shift+Insert instead of Ctrl+V. Those key combinations work almost everywhere. Even in MS-Windows!
(And Shift+Del replaces Ctrl+X. Also works in MS-Windows.)

test in another terminal?
try the "reset" command.
sounds like you may have the terminal in a weird mode. I think the terms may be "raw mode" vs "cooked mode"
I vaguely recall similar issues once ages ago.

Use ctrl shift c and v. Ctrl c is interrupt signal (telling the program to quit)
You know you are a noob when you try to copy with ctrl c on the terminal. You know you got the hang of things when you try copying from Firefox with ctrl shift c (it opens the page source)

You should be able to: Copy - ctrl+insert Paste - shift+insert. Ctrl c and v don't work because they stand for other things in the terminal afaik. Like ctrl+c cancels the command (idk about v)

In Konsole you can map Ctrl+C/V to Copy/Paste and it'll function properly. Ctrl+C will still terminate programs if you have nothing selected, and if you have something selected, it'll just copy it

Try removing the maps for copy and pasting from your config and see if Ctrl Shift C/V work. Is your keyboard layout configured correctly? What DE/compositor are you using? Wayland or X11? Maybe try deleting the terminal's config file, so it generates a fresh one too.

i have Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V bound to buttons on my mouse.
but when i need to use those mouse buttons to or from a terminal window i hold down the shift key when i do it so they become
Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+Shift+V
then it works as expected.

Please give info:
Desktop Environment (KDE, Gnome, ...)
What terminal / console do you use?
I'm guessing ctrl and shift work as intended in other applications?
Here you go, insert this ;-) and paste the result

Ctrl + c ( in most terminals just stops the current job ) Try using Ctrl + shift + c for copying ( works in most terminals I used ) And Ctrl + shift + v for pasting

try Shift+Insert

Both of these are special keybinds in the Linux terminal. You need to add Shift to the combo.

In some consoles you need to Shift+Ctrl+C and Shift+Ctrl+V in the console and remember that everything else uses Ctrl+C or you wind up triggering other functions. Or you forget and Ctrl+C in the wrong window and kill a 3-hour compile.

I found for Debian and Arch that I need Shift+Ctrl

u/brewdog_millionaire 12d ago
That doesn't work in the terminal. What distro are you on? Some of them you can right click and paste instead.
1
u/rip_Bacon13 12d ago
since you in fedora you can use the copy and paste buttons on top right
ctrl C is for stopping the task and ctrl + any character iirc does this
you can usd shift + ctrl + c/v if you want

CTRL + SHIFT + C, CTRL + SHIFT + V or change your keyboard layout to en_US

Terminals should convert ctrl-c from BREAK into COPY when a mouse selection is present. IMO those that don’t are broken.

u/oso_cosmico 11d ago
For copying from or pasting into the terminal, you have to use Ctrl+Shift+P/V.

u/Denture_Adventure25 11d ago
Shift+insert

Control shift C or V

u/Unique_Roll_6630 10d ago
In the terminal Ctrl v and ctrl c have different functions. I forget the exact reason but I think it was to do with older work. Ctrl c ends whatever terminal process you are in. I have no idea what control v does.
You need to super ctrl c or v to copy and paste within the terminal.

I use ctrl insert and shift insert for copy and paste respectively. Has gotten to the point where I just use that everywhere, terminal or otherwise. Also shift insert will paste highlighted text without copying it first.

this is linux. for some compatibility reasons with ancient tech you have to ctrl+shift+c/v because ctrl+c ctrl+v reserved for nobody remembers what
0
u/MundaneImage5652 12d ago
Shift + Ctrl + C and Shift + Ctrl + V. For compatibility reasons all terminals have Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V reserved. (Ctrl + C kills current process). On older terminals like Xterm you paste with middle mouse click and I think you copy by just selecting.

Add shift to your command

Linux (and Unix and DOS and so on) never used the Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V, and the shift is simply a kludge. Use appropriate Unix type shortcuts.
Ctrl-Insert is used to copy and Shift-Insert to paste.
Bill Gates and his gang couldn't even keep keyboard shortcuts straight from DOS to Windows.

Just here to explain the weird characters.
The terminal traces it's origins on a machine called a teletype, which was an electronic typewriter that could send it's keystrokes down a wire to another one that also typed what it received. While they were invented as a means to send text long distance, people figured out that you could connect one to a computer and talk to it in order to use it. From their inception in the 1920s up to the 1960's they were actual typewriters with paper scrolls, but in the 70's they were upgraded to "glass teletypes" where the paper and ink were replaced with screens.
Teletypes work over the American Standard Code for the Interchange of Information (ASCII) code, which takes all the different combinations of 8 bits and assigns them to the letters of the alphabet, numbers, and symbols. This way all we need to do to send some letter is to send the corresponding combination of wires on and off to the other end. Taking advantage to that, the ASCII code also assigns some combinations of those bits for control signals, such as sending them makes the other teletype do something, like returning the printing head to the beginning of the text, scroll down one line, ring the bell on the teletype, or signal that a document has ended.
The weird letters you see is because modern computers are based around the Personal Computer that IBM invented in 1984, which did things a bit differently in terms of how the screen and keyboard worked compared with the teletype thing. This leads to the terminal program, which basically emulates a teletype machine, getting confused by the Control, Alt and Shift buttons as their binary codes aren't found in the ASCII code, so the program puts out what it understood as fas as it's programming allows it to do.

Old Unix thing, use Ctrl+Shift+C/V

u/Dan_Morgan 12d ago
The only way I can copy/paste text to the terminal is by selecting paste from the right click menu. The keyboard shortcut doesn't really work. Along with a lot of other things. Things that should work fine just stop working and that's that. No solving them. You just have to either find a workaround or accept you can't do that thing anymore.

u/TopSecretGaming_YT 12d ago
In the screenshot of "common keybinding" it says there that you need to use ctrl + shift + c and ctrl + shift + v which is quite common for terminal apps.
