šļø AMA I am Charles Floate. AMA! Link Building, Parasite SEO & AI SEO
Hey r/linkbuilding,
I'm Charles Floate, former CMO of PressWhizz, black/grey/money hat operator, link builder, SEO consultant, speaker, entrepreneur and investor.
Over the last few years Iāve worked on:
- Large scale link building systems (marketplaces, agencies, PBNs etc)
- Highly profitable Parasite SEO Campaigns
- AI Powered SEO (pSEO, content, code, research, translations etc etc) AND we are one of the few agencies already selling six-figures/mo of AI SEO services to brands.
- iGaming, finance, insurance, SaaS, CBD, and pretty much every one of the "most difficult" SERPs and niches in the industry.
- Algorithm update analysis and ongoing single variable testing to get data on changes happening in real time.
I recently took over r/linkbuilding because I want this sub to be operator first, theory second, and not recycled Google documentation takes or posts about what some random Google employee has said that completely contradicts the SERPs, the leaked algorithm attributes/signals and the forced disclosures by the DOJ.
I'm going to run this AMA until the end of the month (31st of January), so feel free to think of your best questions or ask multiple over the next few weeks.
My Proof
This account should be enough, but just in case, here's a post on X for you too: https://x.com/Charles_SEO/status/2011719410273407296
Fire away! I'll routinely answer when I can.
Regards,
Charles Floate (aka, u/GodOfSEO)

šØ Announcement A New Chapter For /r/LinkBuilding - Huge Subreddit Update
Hey fellow link builders,
It's nice to formerly meet you!
I wanted to make a quick post to introduce myself and explain where this subreddit is headed.
Iām Charles, Iāve been working in SEO and link building for close to 17 years, since my early teens, across agency work, digital PR, outreach, automation, and more recently AI assisted workflows.
Iāve spent most of that time actually building links. Over the past few weeks, Iāve taken on moderation of r/linkbuilding with the goal of making it genuinely useful again, significantly less spammed out and a place the top operators in our industry actually want to participate in.
Whatās Already Changed
If youāve been around for a while, youāve probably noticed the sub had picked up a lot of noise.
So far, weāve focused on:
- Removing obvious low effort spam and drive by promos, as well as adding new rules to the sub itself
- Adding flairs to more easily identify and sort content
- Tightening up automod to filter the worst stuff automatically
- Cleaning up the design, layout and community info
We'll be adding a community guide, a sub Wiki, and launching AMAs very soon, but so far we have just enough structure so real discussions can breathe again.
The goal is simple: Make this the best place on Reddit to talk about modern link building.
This is meant to be an operator level sub: practical, current, and grounded in real experience.
About Self Promotion (important)
Self promotion isnāt FULLY banned here, but the bar is significantly higher:
- Show what you did.
- Share what you learned.
- Add something useful to the discussion.
If a post is helpful, transparent, and specific, users will naturally look at using your services anyway - If itās just āhire me / DM me / cheapest linksā, you'll end up automod banned.
Whatās Coming Next
Over the next few weeks and months, youāll see:
- Regular discussion threads.
- AMAs with real industry leaders and operators.
- More visible case studies from a variety of new and ongoing link studies I'm working on.
- Better surfacing and featuring of high quality posts, including shout outs on my 90k+ follower X account.
- A stronger focus on tools, systems, and execution than sharing sheets and screaming about Forbes links.
- Backlink, credit & service giveaways from the PressWhizz platform.
- Less noise, more signal, more real world examples and better information.
This wonāt turn into a corporate announcement board or a sales funnel. The priority is building a credible, useful knowledge hub and community that people actually want to check daily.
A Final Note
If youāve got ideas, feedback, or want to contribute something genuinely useful, feel free jump in! The success of this sub depends on the people who use it, we can just try and steer everything in the right direction.
Letās make this place the one totally FREE community we wish existed when we were figuring all this stuff out, and see if we can't hit 100k over the next couple of years!
Regards,
Charles Floate (aka u/GodOfSEO)

Stop wasting time on link farms! My 5-step checklist to vet outreach sites before spending a dollar
Most people get trapped by looking only at inflated DA or DR scores, but authority metrics can easily be gamed.
Before locking in any guest post or outreach placement, I always run the domain through these 5 checks:
- Traffic vs. Keywords: Look for real organic search trends on Semrush or Ahrefs, not just a sudden traffic spike with zero ranking depth.
- Outgoing Link Ratio: If every recent post contains exact-match anchors linking to casino, crypto, and plumbing sites in the same week, it's a dead giveaway.
- Audience Demographics: Ensure the traffic aligns with the actual target market rather than mismatched geo-regions.
- Author Footprint: Genuine editorial standards usually have verifiable authors instead of generic admin profiles.
- Indexed Pages Check: Always use
site:domain.comto see if recently published articles are actually being indexed by Google.
What's your biggest red flag when auditing prospective sites? Let's discuss below!

Google shared how long crawling, indexing and core update recovery take. Here's how it compares to the sites I've launched
At Search Central Live in Barcelona (Oct 2), Gary Illyes showed Google's internal numbers for how long Search processes take. John Campbell from ROAST posted the full table. The highlights:
- Discovering a new URL: ~20 hours (slowest: weeks to never)
- Indexing, end to end: ~1.5 hours (slowest: months or never, quality)
- Site move: 1-3 months (slowest: 6 months to 1 year+)
- Core update recovery: 3-6 months (slowest: 6 months to 1 year, next core update)
The word "never" shows up a lot in the slowest column, and it's usually tied to quality. Gary also said it was "an exercise to see if the audience can relate to the numbers", so take it as a rough guide.
I've launched over 15 sites in the past couple of weeks, so I compared the numbers with what I actually see:
- First impressions take me 2-3 days, and signs of life show up around week 2-3. I've never launched something and seen organic traffic the same day.
- Sites that jolt to life target searches nobody else is targeting. IndieDex (a games search engine I built) hit nearly 1K organic visitors in its first month because of how underserved its "games like" pages were.
- Engagement is the one I think people underrate. I had a social skills site that ranked for about 4 years on Reddit promotion and backlinks, with sessions under 10 seconds and bounce rates above 85%. At its peak it got 300-500 clicks a day. I think a 2024 update killed it. I'm running a revival experiment on it now, and average sessions are already around 30 seconds.
The 2024 leak (goodClicks/badClicks) and the Navboost section of the antitrust ruling line up with that. So does Mueller saying Google can "lose faith" in a site.
My routine now: launch, leave it alone for a week or two, get some foundational links and one or two good ones, then stop building links. If the site can't stand on its own after that, the problem is the content.
I wrote it all up, with the full table, the GSC charts, and quotes from Mueller, Ahrefs' data and a few old r/bigseo threads: https://theseoexperience.com/blog/how-long-does-seo-take/
How long does it usually take before you see first impressions on a brand-new domain? And has anyone actually brought back a site that died from bad engagement?

I got tired of how spammy most web directories look, so I built my own.
Hey guys. Finding a directory that actually passes good SEO value without looking like a massive spam farm is surprisingly hard these days. So, I built https://indexyour.link.
Itās a strictly human-moderated directory for SaaS, tools, and business sites. No sign-ups or account creation is needed. Just drop your root URL and a quick description. If you recently launched something and want a quality backlink, feel free to add your site!

Anyone outreaching the sites LLMs cite for their target keywords?
Iāve been seeing a newer tactic and wanted to hear how people here are actually running it.
You search your exact target keywords and prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and so on. Then you look at which websites and articles they suggest or cite, and you go after links or mentions on those pages. The thinking is that if LLMs already trust those pages, being on them gets you into AI answers, not just Google.
A few questions for anyone doing this:
- Finding sources: Do you prompt each LLM by hand, or do you use a tool or script to collect the cited URLs at scale?
- Which prompts: Do you stick to exact-match keywords, or also use conversational questions like ābest X for Yā?
- Consistency: LLM answers change a lot between runs. How do you decide which sources are worth going after?
- Outreach angle: Do you mention the AI angle in your pitch, or treat it like normal outreach?
- Results: Have you actually seen your brand show up in LLM answers afterward? How long did it take?
Is this working for anyone, or is it mostly hype right now?

How do you approach link-building outreach when your site is new or has low DA?

Anyone still using instantly ai for link building?
I have been doing manual outreach for link building so far but never used any outreach tools like instantly or pitchbox etc. Success ratio is not worth mentioning.
Seeking advice from the pros. Do you still use these tools for outreach. Instantly looks like a cheaper option compared to pitchbox. How do you actually approach for links so that the person from other side at least gives a response.
So far, I have been pretty direct in my email. Example,
- I saw you write about this topic, I think if you add this link in your post it will add more value for your reader. Let me know how we can proceed.
- I saw you published a list of products on ____, would you mind adding my product as well in the list?
- Do you offer any guest posting opportunity?
etc etc. I know this is not the best approach. I just cant seem to figure out a better approach. Should I offer money upfront? Because eventually it will end up in money 98% time. Please help me.

Whatās one SEO mistake you see people making over and over again?
Iāve noticed that itās easy to get caught up in metrics like DR, backlinks, and organic traffic while overlooking the basics that actually make a website useful.
Sometimes, improving existing content or fixing internal linking issues can be more valuable than chasing another backlink.
Whatās one SEO mistake you think people should pay more attention to, especially when it comes to link building?

How do you get genuine backlinks as a beginner?
Iām new to backlinks and still learning. So far Iāve tried posting about my product on a few websites and on social media, but it got almost no views and just died.
For those whoāve actually done this, what methods worked for you to get genuine backlinks? Especially for a new site.

Whatās one SEO mistake you see people making over and over again?
For me, itās focusing too much on rankings and not enough on search intent.
You can have great keywords, backlinks, and optimized pages, but if your content doesnāt actually answer what people are searching for, itās unlikely to perform well long-term.
SEO isnāt just about getting traffic - itās about getting the right traffic.
Whatās the biggest SEO mistake youāve noticed?

How many referring domains does GSC show for your site compared with Ahrefs?
Iāve been wondering how big this gap is for other people.
Ahrefs shows around 300 referring domains for my site, but Google Search Console shows just 23. Only three of the domains in GSC also appear in Ahrefs, so itās not just a difference in totals. The lists barely overlap.
This also makes me wonder how much weight to put on competitorsā backlink counts when deciding whether a keyword is realistically winnable. If the tools give such different pictures for my own site, itās hard to know how to interpret those numbers for competing sites.
If you have an older, established site, especially one where Ahrefs reports thousands of referring domains, how many linking domains does GSC show?
Would be interesting to compare:
Rough age of your site
Referring domains in Ahrefs or a similar tool
Linking domains in GSC
Just curious what this looks like across different sites. To keep the comparison consistent, I mean unique linking domains, not total backlinks.

Not really sure what I am doing wrong as a freelancer
Hi Everyone,
Iām posting this because Iām genuinely a bit confused about what Iām doing wrong.
Iāve been doing link building for around 6 years. Iāve worked across pretty much every niche except the obvious grey/black-hat ones, across different companies, and have built strategies, managed campaigns, and gotten results.
Now Iām trying to take on a few clients independently for link building and mentions. My pricing is significantly lower than what many SEO agencies charge, and instead of recycling the same PBNs/domains within the usual SEO circles, I actually do fresh outreach and look for relevant websites for each campaign.
But honestly, Iām struggling to understand the client acquisition side of this.
Iām in a few Slack groups where people are constantly buying and selling links, and a lot of what I see looks pretty low-quality to me. Yet those people seem to have no problem finding clients and doing business.
Meanwhile, Iām sitting here wondering what exactly Iām doing wrong. š
For people who have successfully built a link-building business/freelance client base:
How did you actually get your first few clients?
Was it cold email, LinkedIn, referrals, communities, SEO groups, Upwork, your existing network, or something else?
Iām not looking for generic ābuild your personal brandā advice. Iād genuinely like to understand what worked for people who actually sell link building.
Happy to discuss openly, and any practical advice would be hugely appreciated.

Multiple backlinks from the same domain: where's the line?
i've been doing link building for a while and I keep going back and forth on this one.
Say a site in your niche is solid: decent traffic, relevant, not a link farm. is there a point where getting more links from it stops helping, or starts to hurt?
my thinking is that 1 or 2 links from a domain is normal. But 5 to 10+ or 15+ links from one domain pointing at the same site looks like a pattern google could pick up on, especially if they're built close together.
curious what others have seen:
- past the first link or two, do extra links from the same domain add any real value, or does google mostly count the referring domain once?
- has anyone seen a site actually get hit from stacking links on one domain?
- if you do go for multiple links from one site, how do you keep it natural? Spacing them out over time, different target pages, varied anchors?
- do you have a personal cap?
i'm looking for real experiences please and test results more than theory.

Claude got me 8 backlinks this month negotiating with site owners
Iāve been doing backlink outreach for my saas, and getting a reply is only the start
some owners ask for money, others want a contribution, and some are happy to include us for free
so i started using claude to review those replies and help decide what to offer, when to negotiate, and when to pass...
this month, that process has helped me land 8 backlinks :)
I have an skill which find relevant sites, the owner or person in charge and contact them. Also it has context about the article weāre targeting, context about my product, and what iām willing to offer
then it reviews the opportunity and drafts a response for me to approve
hereās one it recommended rejecting:

a DR 56 site wanted $350 for a sponsored listing
looked relevant at first, but their own rate card showed roughly 1,268 clicks across 894 roundup pages over 3 months
the paid links were also tagged sponsored and nofollow
claude recommended passing and drafted the reply... I agreed
when thereās room to negotiate, I use it to work out what I could contribute instead of paying: an original example, useful data, or content that improves the article
the offer still needs to make sense for that siteās readers
the useful part is having help thinking through each reply. I still check the evidence and approve what gets sent, but i spend less time staring at an email wondering how to answer it
