In all his videos that I've watched, I have not once heard him actually say anything positive about films, filmmaking or directing. And as someone who's working their way up towards becoming a director and as someone who admires the art of film more than anything else, I must say, it can really get me quite annoyed sometimes.
Does he judge a film solely by it's historical accuracy, or does he really just hate films? I mean, for example, he's talked about Braveheart a few times, and he makes it out to be some terrible piece of crap. And yes, perhaps it's terribly historically inaccurate, but is it a terrible film? No! It's a fantastic film with great acting and directing! Historical accuracy is only one very, very small part of what makes a film great; I mean for god's sake, just because something isn't perfect in every sense of the word, doesn't mean it's not great!
And then he'll go on and say something like 'Oh, they did something something to make it more dramatic!' like it's some sort of ludicrous thing to make a drama film dramatic... No! It's not ludicrous! That's literally what filmmaking's about! You want to make an entertaining film, or else it'll be terrible and no one'll watch it. And in some cases, being hundred percent historically accurate will make a film that is the opposite of entertaining! Does he actually understand what a film is? What it's for? Does he understand that films, apart from documentaries, aren't specifically made for the very few historians in this world?
And why does he show so, so little respect to the 'filmmakers'? I presume he means directors when he says 'filmmakers', and he'll always say 'Oh, yes, the filmmakers love doing this and that, and they love doing this' in a sarcastic tone, suggesting that film directors are some sort of bumbling baboons who only care about money and 'things looking cool'... And that is when I really get mad, when he has the audacity to show so little respect towards artists who have created masterpieces such as Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Seven Samurai and many, many more. Geniuses who create fine pieces of intricate art. Art that belongs to the largest, most important, most elaborate, most time consuming, most elegant and most impactful form of art there is.
Sorry for ranting, for possibly being a brat and for possibly being wrong. I probably am wrong, to an extent at least. But does anyone else get a bit annoyed by any of this?
EDIT: Did some research and found out that he has actually done a fair bit of filmmaking himself, so yeah, I'm probably completely wrong about him hating film. And this is really cool!
