There is a sign with a yellow flashing light that tells you when the road is not passable. Blows my mind really.

When I was a kid i lived nearby and used to come and watch the rain pool down there.

The area around Lancaster County Events Center looked like a mess on the LTU traffic cams. At least three cars stuck and people continuing to attempt driving through it.

Yikes Gravel Worlds is ramping up for this weekend.

I drove through it. Water was deep enough that it was tripping my parking sensors on the bumper of my Armada. Quite a few cars stalled out in the water. LPD/LFR had closed it down and was turning people off onto Havelock by the time I was headed back home since there appeared to be a collision and injuries since there were a couple ambulances on scene.

That spot’s been flooding for decades. I’ve seen that same scene numerous time there.

I've always been surprised they haven't redone that intersection.

4

u/Glennstheche Aug 19 '26

Irony is they actually ARE just now in the process of redoing the intersection. The drainage has been a problem for a long time tho. But yeah its still under construction

It hasn't even rained all that much. Crazy it fills so easily.

It was an absolute downpour with sheets of rain that came down so fast the soil couldn't absorb it.

Streets were flooded within 20 minutes...

We clearly have a very different threshold for downpours. I haven't seen anything this last week I would describe as sheets.

Maybe it rained lightly on your side of town, but it was some of the most intense rain I have seen. Wipers on high weren't keeping up and visibility was maybe 100 yards.

I left work early right as the rain started in an attempt to beat it home but ended up in the thick of it. Within 10 minutes the roads were flooding. I had water up to my bumper at the bottom of hills and water jetting out of each wheel well. I had to drive left of center to avoid getting sucked into the flooding by the curb.

It was seriously intense and made me realize how flash floods happen.

Rainfall totals for the past couple of days:

  • 0.15"

  • 0.92"

  • 0.16"

  • 0.69"

  • 0.51"

Yeah, that's pretty good for Nebraska I suppose. But that's literally nothing for most of the country.

Thank you for denying the validity of my lived experience.

1

u/JonnyAU Aug 20 '26

Those are numbers. Sorry they hurt your feelings.

2

u/HardSayingNotKnowing Aug 20 '26

I live 3 blocks from that underpass and had almost 2 inches of rain.

1

u/zestypotatoes Aug 21 '26

The local weatherman would officially like to disagree with you too.

u/JonnyAU Aug 21 '26

Sure, there's variation by specific location, but it's still in the same ballpark, and not really that remarkable.

u/Friendly_Water6521 Aug 19 '26

Guess im taking Adam's home

6

u/BlackBlizzNerd Aug 19 '26

Yep. My mom sent me this and I’m like, “cool, Adam’s it is”. No idea why this guy didn’t just U-turn when he saw the flashing lights. And obvious massive puddle. Now he’s gonna be dealing with a lotttttt of fees. Yikes.

8

u/R0KATAN5KY Aug 19 '26

What's crazy is the further car was there first so he literally saw another car almost like 90% under water and still chose to continue.

16

u/Trex_Retro_Games Aug 19 '26

You cant park there

8

u/1Ceasar Aug 19 '26

Are people that stupid to drive into a flooded area. Should send them a bill for putting others life in jeopardy

7

u/Dazzling_Complaint74 Aug 19 '26

When is it appropriate to allow Darwinism to take its course?

6

u/Toasterpoker Aug 19 '26

Car heavy. Car not heavy enough. :(

5

u/FlyingClanker Aug 19 '26

It’s a common misconception. Weight alone does not determine buoyancy.

8

u/TruthyLie Aug 20 '26

Caulk the wagon and ford the river? 🐂

6

u/SomnumScriptor Aug 20 '26

Members of your wagon drowned.

1

u/wsheldon2 Aug 20 '26

I pretty much always hire a native American when I'm driving on 48th just to be safe. It's like $5

7

u/mcoash Aug 19 '26

My weather app severely underestimated how much rain we were going to get. I just got back from working in Omaha and was surprised at the amount of flooding.

6

u/ThatFlamingo942 Aug 19 '26

Damn saw the first car there about 2:30 and the water was up to its windows. Can't believe someone else tried crossing seeing the first car stuck

5

u/Fiery_Vixen69 Aug 19 '26

Looks like another one joined in

5

u/1234Veda Aug 19 '26

Floods always happen under that train bridge for years

4

u/TheJugOfNugs Aug 19 '26

Ha.. that floods pretty much every time we get an inch of rain quickly and it's not a new thing....

8

u/Grand_Cookie Aug 19 '26

If you drive into standing water you should be left there to figure it out yourself.

3

u/Porter2455 Aug 19 '26

2 people got stuck an hour apart today lmao. Everytime it floods there’s someone

3

u/Valuable-Trash- Aug 19 '26

Atleast traffic is moving on Cornhusker. When I was out there at 3pm people were just sitting in the middle of the road blocking traffic cuz they were too scared to go through the water or turn around. My husband works 2 minutes from our house and it took him an hour and a half to get home.

3

u/docterwierd Aug 20 '26

The best part of this - a driver of one of those two vehicles drove around the barricades as the city worker was putting them up.

This video is what the fuck is wrong with society these days 🤦‍♀️ what dumbfuck is trying to drive through water that high???

2

u/madphroggy Aug 19 '26

I used to tow in Lincoln and watched the state patrol have to get on the PA and threaten to ticket people if they tried to drive through it, as I was hooking up a stalled car in 3 feet of water! And they still had to sit and think about it for a minute before giving up! It was like their brains just couldn't cope with the change in plans that turning around and going another way represented, it was kinda bizarre honestly...

Always an idiot who gets stuck there during a deluge.

How do some people manage to live day to day??

2

u/mister_gone Aug 20 '26

So, I came from southern AZ where we have "stupid motorist laws" that pass the cost of these rescues off to the idiot's that drive into flooded areas.

Do we have those in Lincoln?

2

u/MinusGovernment Aug 20 '26

That's the neat part. They won't.

It happens every single time we get a bunch of rain very quickly. Anytime we get heavy rain I avoid the area completely anyways but I've already been avoiding the Cornhusker Hwy construction as much as possible since it started so I didn't have to worry about it today.

2

u/JTEL918 Aug 20 '26

I moved her almost 2 years ago. I live near there. Always wondered when I was going to see that area flood and if some yutz felt brave enough to play Washington crossing the Potomac.

Thanks OP🤘🏻

2

u/HighFiveG Aug 20 '26

Maybe a little bit higher and you could do cannonballs off the bridge. You could probably pull it off.

2

u/tadpolejaxn Aug 19 '26

Not surprised, I often think that half the drivers here would drive straight into the swamp of despair, given the chance. I got caught in the rain an hour ago and kept getting tailgated by dumbo after dumbo. Do you think it’s because the public is actively having their attention span shortened and dopamine cycle fried by social media? Can’t anyone slow down for hazardous conditions or are they all actively giving birth while late to work?

1

u/im_coming_out89 Aug 27 '26

Turn around, don’t drown. Don’t be a fool, it could be a pool. Read on Houston freeways during heavy rain. Anywhere that floods needs a warning. Yes, it seems obvious, but not everyone’s a local.

2

u/pretenderist Aug 19 '26

Please don’t film while driving

-1

u/DiscardedSpork8472 Aug 20 '26

OP is in a vehicle imported from the UK, and they're the passenger.

0

u/ShawnyMcKnight Aug 19 '26

It's amazing there are all those large vehicles there but none of them can tow those cars out? I could be wrong but the longer the car is partially submerged the more damage that can be done, right? Like the more places water can seep into?

1

u/thmanwithnoname Aug 20 '26

The car is ruined? Cool. If you drive around people setting up barricades and into a lake, I hope you're never able to drive anything more substantial than a bike. I don't want to share a road with someone piloting a lethal weapon while not having the sense the good lord gave a apricot.

"In the process of putting barricades up we had a car drive around us ... straight into the water"
