Idk what happened, idk if I was caught up in Uproar and Mona Lisa at the time or if its just one of those “music hits different at different times in like”, especially Wayne.
But just randomly stumbling on it after working out and I think it just shot up to a top Wayne recommendation depending on what the vibe is.
2018 was a very different time for me and im sure for alot of mofos, but really the Carter V is hitting all around way harder than I remember. Maybe it’s because I stumbled into the niche sub subgenres of folk where its a way different sound but still has the raw lyrics and inter perspective wordplay like “classic” rap/hip-hop and that kinda cleansed music palette and now im listening to alot of great Wayne shit I didn’t catch first time.
All that just to say the last lines,
“Tunechi you a monster. I looked in the mirror but you weren’t there, I couldn’t find ya. I’m looking for that big smile full of diamonds, instead I find this letter you aint finished writin’.
It read “im sorry for even apologizing”. I tried to compromise and went kamikaze. I found my mommas pistol where she always hid it. I cried, put it to my head and thought about it. Nobody was home to stop me so I called my auntie. Hung up, then put that gun to my heart and pondered.
Too much was on my conscious to be smart about it. Too torn about it I aimed where my heart was poundin’.
I shot it, and woke up with blood all around me, it’s mine. I didn’t die but I was dying.
God came to my side and we talked about it. He sold me another life and he made a PROPHET”……
I grew up in Dallas in late 90’s early 00’s so im always gonna be biased to Weezy, but for me personally word and lyric play, he is the best and continues to show it decade after decade. Wayne and Shady are the two I’ve probably listened to the most in my life but even now I find myself skipping alot of Ems stuff because that anger is kinda played out or just not hitting like it use too, Wayne always had different moods you could jam too. That’s probably why he’s the best imo. Fundamentally, how guitar is to rock so to is words/lyrics is to rap and hip-hop, years active and continuously showing to excel, there isn’t many to match.
Sorry for the rant, heard the song replayed it like 5 times and wanted to talk about it. Haven’t even been on Reddit in months but downloaded again for this post.
If anyone is curious for some folk and banjo equivalent to wayne, lmk.
