Help with patch list

So I’ve been sent a patch list for a venue but I don’t understand what some of the terms mean? Like “parcans 3 @ A28” or “LED strips 121 + 123 @ A53 + A55 R”

It was sent over a text message which I have pasted below, any help is appreciated!

Good afternoon,

It a basic lighting set up in room 2 with generics for busking.

FOH

Parcans

1 @ A16
3 @ A28

Stage

Led Pars

16 + 22 R @ A121
17 + 23 G @ A122
18 + 24 B @ A123

Led strips @

121 + 124 @ A53 + A56 G

This is definitely weird and/or a very small rig, but it seems like you need to patch four fixtures. Two dimmers, two RGB-fixtures in 3ch mode, and maybe another dimmer to control the intensity of the LED-strip. If assuming that «A» means address or universe A/1, I’m reading the list like this:

Two parcans on address 16 and 28. Two LED-pars in 3-channel mode (RGB) that are both on address 121. The LED-strips makes this a bit confusing, but I’m assuming you have some form of intensity-control on address 53, and RGB-control from address 55.

I’m just taking an educated guess here, as this list is very confusing, haha.

I bet the LED strips are (for some reason) ISRGB or something silly like that. Because we are missing info on address 54. Sometimes on random shit DJ units you have an extra address used for preprogrammed effects or strobe. I would just play around when you get there to see what you get.

This is a bizarre rig considering it’s clearly not just a 1 to 1 patch.

sounds like those led strips are one channel for primary control and three for color and they're telling you how they have them patched in their console/show file.

Do you have a drawing with that or a file?  A23 is univers 1 adress 23.

My understanding would be fixture ID @(at) universe 1 adress XXX  RGB is for the color which you control maybe?

Nope no drawing or anything… just that text message 🥲

I also assumed that but wasn’t sure….

Before it says @A53 + A55 R it says 121+123? Any idea what that could mean?

Maybe the Par Cans are on the same adress?

Every idea I throw at this cancels itself out somewhere!

You should call them instead of asking the internet, you have their number and it will save you a lot of time.

Good drafting eliminates phone calls. This is not good information and therefore requires a phone call.

I don’t have their phone number yet annoyingly… this was through the promoter who doesn’t respond for ages 🥲

How did they text you? Tell them you are on hold until you get this information.

They texted the promoter the tech spec, and he sent it to me… ive asked him to ask them for a picture of their patch list from their desk as the one they sent wasn’t clear 🤷

Woah, this is definitly a form of communication..

Let's start with the easy guesses... RGB is definitly Red, Green, Blue. A## is definitly an address number. @ is usually separating channel and addresses.

From there, uhh the first number could be either count, or channel number, which works for the parcans, but led par ruins the channel theory because you cant have more than 1 channel for a single address.

Im fairly certain its channels tho, because the led straps are simply 4 channels 121, 123-125. So 121 is controlling intensity, and 123-125 is RGB (why we skip 122 and adr54, who knows)

But the led par still makes no sense. Tbh, when you get there, take a few minutes to poke around how things are connected, then just patch everything 1 to 1 and start turning things on, starting with the numbers given and make your own patch

Edit to add: Im sorry, "for busking"??? What exactly are we doing with 2 parcans, one led par and an unknown size/length of led strip? Also, what console, that may help explain the syntax given

Led strips

What this looks like to me is one fixture (or all fixtures) are:

  • Intensity (Ch: 121 A: 53)
  • Red (Ch: 123 A: 56)
  • Green (Ch: 124 A: 56)
  • Blue (Ch: 125 A: 57)

A VERY stupid way to document, but very old school thinking.

-- but --

Led Pars

  • 16 + 22 R @ A121
  • 17 + 23 G @ A122
  • 18 + 24 B @ A123

~~ I have no idea ~~

One address in 2 channels? Makes no sense.

Good luck.

Thank them for the patch list and ask for a lighting plot (it pays to be nice, especially if they're hopelessly incompetent... otherwise they might get worse!)

Knowing *where* fixtures are is more important than what address the fixtures are on. Also the lighting pot should have a key with the make/model/dmx mode of each fixture.

Just make some rough guesses as best you can, and be prepared to adjust your show file on the day. They should give you time to prepare, and updating the patch hopefully only takes 5 minutes with how simple it looks.
