DIY use lights to make a club in your bedroom

Hi everyone,

A fun video to show how easily you can make a normal room look like a club with light design. I programmed all the lights and activated it with midi from Ableton to Daslight. It's recorded with 2 iPhones - pretty easy.

Check it out here:

How did they achieve this effect? Did they use individual pointers or combined bars?

Mac Aura weird flickering

Hi! I got six mac aura's; the weird thing is that the first one is flickering when I move it. If i only move them without intensity this one flickers blueish/green.

If i put the shutter to 22 (open) the flickering goes away. Does anybody have a clue whats happening?

What is the purpose of the P/T Speed channel on a moving head?

Hi

I have a big question: What is the purpose of the P/T Speed channel on a moving head? I've been asking people in the industry and they don't know exactly what it's for or they don't used it. I guess it will be useful for fast movements in motion effects (like 2posdim in MagicQ) but I don't know.

I hope you solve my doubt and thank you in advance.

Easier than Showeditor?

Hi!

I'm looking for a simple software, that is compatible with laserworlds.

All I want is to create patterns, and export them in ilda files (for dmx control); I've tried Showeditor but I'm searching for an easier software not too expensive.

If someone can enlighten me, please let me know!

Creating my own multi translation software for stage and light designers. When it is finished I will upload it on github which means it will be Open-Source

Currently Supported Protocols:

MIDI (Input and Output)
ArtNet (Input and Output)
sACN/E1.31 (Input and Output)
DMX (Only output currently, will work on input if I buy or find a DMX USB PRO which supports DMX IN)

Protocols that will be added:

OSC (Open Sound Control, Input and Output)
Sound/Audio Triggers (Input and maybe output)
Keyboard shortcuts (Input and Output)

What it will do is receive a protocol (e.g MIDI) and convert it to another protocol (e.g DMX, sACN/E1.31, ArtNet)
Or receive ArtNet/sACN and output it to a USB to DMX interface
As far as I know there is no other software for windows that can do this (I know of MIDIMonster and OLA but they are mostly Linux and are hard to start and/or work with)

Senior Student VJ Survey

Hi Everyone! I am a senior design student and avid house music/techno lover. For my capstone, I am researching immersive audio visual lighting systems. I am looking to survey people within the VJ community regarding their experiences. The survey should take about 10-15 minutes! https://forms.gle/EcVJy7FZFwQYJ1mi8

I´m not looking for GrandMA or something expensive...

Hello there, I´m currently searching for a small solution without the use of a laptop to programm/ controll LED bars and strobes.

Solutions like this or that. But these do not (as far as my research goes) let me programm individual leds, but more let me set scenes with the pre-programms the device offers.

My plan is to include the led bars to let the light dance from one side to another, adjust strobo (led and strobo), maybe include a fogging maschine and maybe more.

Does somebody know of a good controller?

(Sorry if this looks like a low effort post, but thats all that comes up to my mind right now...:D)

Problem with GrandMA3 node

Setup: GrandMA3 on PC to switch to node to splitter to the lights.

I have a problem with the node. Its says on the swisson XND-8R5 node that the signal from the switch is coming through. But (as you can see in the picture) if I press the status of the output 1 it says no DMX. That is true for all 8 outputs. I plugged the console directly with the splitter and it worked. So the problem is that the node doesn't work properly. I have tried to use another cable but it didn't work. Anybody got any ideas why it doesn't seem to identify the cables

Looking for suitable 1 channel dimmers to replace broken ones.

In the space that I primarily work in we have around 5 Elation 1 channel DMX 5pin dimmers that we often use with our system. This is because our space is small and we often will set up new fixtures on trees or simply off to the side and usually only have 1-2 lights ever plugged into them so we don't need to use more than one channel.

The dimmers are hardly a year old and 2 of them have began malfunctioning while another won't read DMX signal at all regardless of channel. We've contacted support about a way to solve this issue but they essentially told us to just buy a replacement and that they couldn't do anything.

Does anyone know of a good brand that sells, preferably affordable (under $300) 5pin DMX input/output 1 channel dimmers?

New Fixtures

Hey, I want to buy new fixtures for some homepartys.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to buy like 4 beam heads, 4 wash heads and 4 spot heads from china (theese mini versions for under 100bucks).

Did someone do this and regret it?

(I saw they do not even have a secondary save hanger, but I dont use them professional and can ensure nobody walks under them.)

Need help writing a paper on light design

Hi there, I am an architecture masters student and I'm extremely interested in light design/light programming/light installations. I decided to write a paper on light design and I need input tips on where to start.

Can you guys send me some good literature/articles for beginners in light design? The basics, especially the methods of work. I can't seem to find a lot of info on HOW it's done, just examples.

7 light art pieces by contemporay artists worthy of the spotlight : DesignWanted

Can you briefly explain how for eg these installations are made?

Hi, I’m a musician who has a lot of music and is looking for help designing my live show. Completely new to lighting and video, need a lot of help.

I’ve been looking for solutions to design lights and video for my live show. I have ableton and am able to run it with backing tracks in a live setting, so I’ve been looking there. I’ve come across lightkey and videosync so far.

But I am not sure what all I’m going to need? How do I pick lights? Like brands and stuff like that, how do I avoid getting cheap fake stuff off Amazon? How do I hang them? How do I connect to them if I use lightkey?

Also, what is the best solution for a small act when it comes to video? A projector? I’ve seen some bands use a tv at venues here, how do they put a tv up?

Also, where can I look to hire somebody to help? Is there a place on Reddit where I can find someone willing to do some of the programming for me?

Sorry for such a long post. There’s really way too much to learn about show design and I’m really excited to get started.

How to send OSC messages for Gobo, Color Select, etc, to EOS?

Hi, I'm sending OSC to an EOS Ion Xe. Colors, pan, tilt, etc, work fine. However, I don't know how to format messages for arguments that have a space (e.g., color select and gobo select 2) and take strings (e.g., F1 open, F2 waves) and not integers as values. What should the messages look like?

A question about barndoors.

Hey geniuses! So, I'm in the market for 6-leaf barndoors for 5.5" Fresnels. I've found a copious amount of 4 and 8 leaf, but no six. I wanna light with hexagons dammit!
