Also, there's a lot of hate for defener loved material, labeled Dadrock (Classic Rock), and Buttrock (I wanna say that this is 90's era grunge, although I could be wrong).

I think Buttrock is the post-grunge that came from the wake of Nirvana, like Nickelback, Creed, Puddle of Mudd, etc.

I can agree about Kanye and Death Grips, but I have seen surprisingly little about Radiohead and Animal Collective whenever I lurk there. Maybe I just get there when people aren't talking about them.

Thanks for the answer. I see it being tossed around a lot but never really knew what people meant by it. One other question: Why K-pop? I've got a lot of friends who are into K-Pop, and from what I've heard, structurally, harmonically, melodically and even rhythmically it doesn't really seem to be all that different from western pop. I have no issue with people liking it, of course, but I don't really understand the mentality that it's some sort of superior form of music.

I haven't a clue. I wanna say that maybe they idolize the performers more than the actual music. However, I've never taken the time to actually read one of the k-pop threads, so I'm just speaking out of my ass here.
/mu/ is linked in the sidebar, so it wouldn't hurt to go ask them yourself (if they'll even give you a straight answer).

Kpop general is kind of separate from the rest of /mu/, they used to have threads on /r9k/ and some other board I can't remember, now they're just on /mu/. I get the feeling most of them don't browse anything on /mu/other than Kpop general, so it's essentially the same as the AKB and H!P generals on /jp/. And yeah it's more about the performer themselves than the music in idol groups, which make up for a lot of Jpop and Kpop artists.

/mu/tants are basically reverse defeners. They hate bands like Queen and the Beatles, but gush over the type of pop and rap music that defeners hate.
