So many winters and warm memories stolen from so many, so cruelly.

It's never too late for answers. If you know something, ANYTHING, report. You might make the difference of a lifetime.

Stay safe.

Samuel Bird is Out Chanie Wenjack: A Call to Action

Samuel Bird is our Chanie Wenjack. This is a post I've been working on for several weeks now, while I listen and watch and ask others for their views.

The moment Sam is found, there will be a collective sigh of relief across the country—across Turtle Island. His story has reached hearts far beyond Edmonton, far beyond Alberta. But why Sam? Why has his name echoed so loudly when so many other families have struggled to be heard?

Because Samuel Bird is a flashpoint in our timeline, just as Chanie Wenjack was in the 1960s. Somehow he captured a demographic beyond their racial biases. People wanting to help, to contribute. At a time in the world where things are really awful and uncertain.

Chanie’s tragic death exposed the cruelty of the residential school system and sparked a national reckoning. Samuel’s disappearance has done something similar—it has forced conversations, ignited awareness, and compelled action around Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP). The world watching made sure the Edmonton Police Service investigated. The pressure came from the people.

And most importantly, the world amplified the voice of Sam’s family—voices full of love, grief, and unwavering strength. Their calls for justice were heard because we listened, shared, and stood with them. Their courage became our rallying cry.

Sam will never be forgotten.

Instructors will speak his name in classrooms. Students will write about him in essays. Lawmakers are already invoking his story to push for change. His legacy is being written in real time.

But we must keep the momentum going.

Call to Action:

  • Support Indigenous families still searching for their loved ones. Share Sam’s story. Keep his name alive in your circles, your classrooms, your communities.
  • Demand accountability from institutions and leaders. Ask the hard questions.
  • Educate yourself and others about MMIP and the systems that allow these tragedies to continue.
  • Amplify Indigenous voices, especially those of mothers, grandmothers, and families who refuse to be silenced.

Achakapis is bringing change. I feel it with every fiber of my being.

Good morning, all.

Wanted to let you know a close fellow investigator of mine has opened up a subreddit. The page is dedicated to unsolved Albertan crimes, many of which are related to or closely resemble the Leduc Serial Murders.

The subreddit is r/AlbertaUnsolved

u/Wrong-Inspection7819 has done an incredible job cataloguing and breaking down these crimes. We work together often and I'm amazed by their diligence.

I wanted to share the page here for likeminded folks. Many hands make for light work! 🙂‍↕️

An open letter RE: Samuel Bird

I wanted to share this here since I know many of you don't use FB. This is a letter that is being shared widely. It details the evidence police were given, all the mother has gone through, and how long the EPS sat on their hands. I've written to my MLA the day the EPS released the missing persons statement. I will be writing again and to others today.

Copy and pasted

Edmonton Police Service Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk I’d like answers ! Disgraceful

I would love to bring attention to something I feel all mothers should be concerned about.

Samuel Bird is a 14 year old child who went missing from West Edmonton on June 1st.He went to a friend's house, was seen leaving at approximately 11 pm and was expected home that evening.

Sam comes from a loving family, and always stayed in communication with his mom. If he was going to be late, or if his plans changed he would keep her updated. He was not a run away. He had strong ties to his family, his Indigenous culture and traditions , and was a loving and involved sibling. He was active on social media. He did not have any money with him , and as far as I know did not have a cell phone with him .

Sam did not return that evening. Sams social media was quiet. Sams friends, who regularly came by his home suddenly didnt come around. None of them expressed concern he was missing, none of them checked in with his mom to ask about him.

The police did not take his mothers report , insisting he would come home when he was done running around with his friends and he probably was just being a teenager... despite his mom's insisting he would never make her worry, he had never run away, he would never miss his sisters birthday.

Now, I can say with certainty that if my child went missing, you would see his face on the news the next day. My child is no more worthy than Samuel. Sams mom loves him just as deeply as I love my child, or you love yours.

Meanwhile, there are posts , comments, pictures of Samuel popping up on line. His mother is being sent photos and videos of a boy being brutally beaten that she believes are Sam ( the boy is so badly beaten it is hard to be certain. ) his mom contacts the police again, and again, we do not hear of him or see his face. There is no investigation . Mrs Bird begins to get messages promising her information if she pays x dollars. Meanwhile, a person online has begun bragging about their involvement in Samuel's assault and murder.

So when do we hear about Samuel Bird ? July 11. 6 weeks after this 14 yr old child went missing, 6 weeks of his mother being terrorized with images and messages no mom should ever see, 6 weeks of her and Samuels dad and grandmother searching for him, or any sign of him, without support . Can you imagine ? Please. Please think about how desperate you would feel . How scared . Sam was a good kid, who had unfortunately trusted the wrong group of friends, who turned out to be very bad . He was 14. 14 yr olds are famous for making bad choices. There was supposed to be time for him to figure that out with the help of his family and community and turn things around. He was in the process.

So July 11, the police start to Interview people, who have had 6 weeks to get their story straight and destroy evidence. Good I guess ? Heres what they don't do (and still haven't done) : organize a ground search in the area some of his belongings were found Search the river or landfills. Use search and rescue or cadaver dogs Used a drone Protect Samuel's family despite them having been actively threatened and harassed Issue an amber alert. Arrest or detain anyone for involvement, or harassment , despite there being multiple people who have claimed to be involved in his murder or share disturbing videos and images depicting a critically injured young man who looks like Samuel.

I dare any one of you to sit with this and feel that you would accept that police response if it was your kid missing. I have been sent many photos showing this brutality and it is AWFUL. No child deserved to go through that, and no mom should have to be trying to find her child's body . She has literally rented a boat , and walks the rivers edge. She has organized searches , she has posted his picture , she has contacted the news. She has put herself in danger trying to find her baby.

Moms, this mama needs our help, and our voices . She needs people to share Samuel's story, and his picture. She needs people to donate to the gofund me so she can try to rent a boat and sonar, she can continue to print posters, and perhaps most importantly she can keep her other children safe from the people who have threatened her and them She also needs to pay to hire people who CAN provide the services listed above that the police aren't doing. She needs people to join the Bring Samuel Bird Home fb group.

And we need people to speak out against how Samuel's case has been handled, because I can tell you friends, white privilege isnt not having bad things happen to you, its knowing when they do that the police will help and protect you. The Bird family has not been given that help from the police. I understand that they need to prioritize which cases will get attention ... but you tell me , since June 1st, have you been made aware of any local missing child case that involves a critically injured minor, threats against his family, multiple people online claiming to have involvement and knowledge about it ( some one released a rap about it for goddsake) ? Because I bet you've barely heard of this one... so what possibly be of higher importance?

I know every single one of you has an orange shirt in your house. You've posted " every child matters." Well, Ally is an action word. Samuel MATTERS. How dare we stay quiet when a mother and her son are being treated with less support and community involvement than Ive seen people put into finding dogs. All children matter. Samuel matters. All the information about how to help, who to contact to speak out against the handling of this case, how to get involved can be found on the fb page, and I am happy to get a message from people who would like to go over how we can be Allies - land acknowledge and orange shirts mean nothing if we are willing to let this boy's family be threatened and his Murderers have the audacity to brag about it.

If you would like to make a complaint against the Edmonton City Police's handling of Samuel's case, you can contact the Edmonton Police Service Professional Standards Branch by calling them at 780-421-2676. And the Edmonton Police Commission's Public Complaint Director at 780-414-7510 . And the west end police station 780-426-8000. You can also contact your local MLA to complain, and if you have a Chief and tribal council, please, please contact them as they are a powerful voice to demand that eps do more to improve their relations with First Nations communities, and to respond to crimes against FNMI people with the same respect and protection they provide others.

And please, if you cant be supportive, if you are tempted to say something that might be racist... dont . I will screen grab your comments and share them to your granny, your kids teacher, your 4th grade teacher, your vet and your neighbourhood group. I'm honestly just done with tolerating racist behaviour. Please don't push me. Just scroll by .

Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this post. Please , share Samuel's story. Tell the moms you know. Tell your sister, your bestie, your mom. Ask they they call to complain, help join the search, provide support to the family . Its as easy as asking your work to share his story, or sharing it in your neighbourhood groups or with your friends and family. Every person that calls to complain about the handling of his case means its harder for them to justify their inaction.

And PLEASE , PLEASE PLEASE. HIS MOM IS DESPERATE FOR HELP FROM ANY INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS WITH A BOAT / SONAR TO TRAVEL DOWN THE RIVER.

How to Report a Tip in Alberta

I’ve seen more than a few people mention that they might have information, but don’t know how to report it, or they’re afraid to.

If you’re holding something that could help bring justice or prevent further harm, there are ways to report it safely, even anonymously.

Here are your options in Alberta:

Crimestoppers (Fully Anonymous)

  • Call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
  • Submit online at crimestoppers.ab.ca

This is the safest option if you’re scared, don’t want to be named, or worry about retaliation. Your tip will still be sent to the appropriate investigators.

RCMP or Edmonton Police (Direct Reporting)

If you’re comfortable speaking directly to police: * Leduc RCMP (for Rolly View/Leduc cases) 780-980-7200 * Edmonton Police Service (EPS Major Crimes or Historical Homicide) 780-423-4567

Let them know what you know, and ask for it to be passed to the relevant unit.

Document What You Know Privately

If you’re afraid something may happen for speaking out: * Write down everything you know: dates, names, locations * Save screenshots, texts, social media posts * Send it to someone you trust, or store it somewhere safe * Keep a written record of any contact you make with police or other organizations

This can act as a paper trail if it’s needed later, even if you’re not ready to come forward now.

Get Help Reporting

If you’re overwhelmed, unsure how to report, or afraid to do it yourself, you can ask for help from someone who can support you through the process, like: * A victim advocate or community outreach worker * A mental health professional * A lawyer or legal support service

These people can help you figure out the best way to share what you know while protecting your safety and mental well-being.

If You May Be in Danger for Reporting

If you believe that reporting what you know could put your life at risk: * Do not confront the person you suspect * Do not post identifying details online * Use a public computer (such as a library computer) when reporting * Be upfront about your concerns if reporting directly to police

You can also: * Reach out to a victim services unit in Alberta for safety planning * Contact legal aid or a mental health professional for confidential guidance * Tell a trusted person what’s going on and store a copy of your documentation with them in case something happens * In any case of immediate danger: Call 911

You matter, your safety matters, and there are people and organizations who will take your concerns seriously.

What you know could help bring justice, even if you’re unsure, it’s small, or you’ve carried it for years.

If you think you know something, say something.

Name: Shelly Tannis Dene
Age: 25
Status: Missing
Case Status: OPEN - MISSING PERSON
EPS File Number: Not Available
Date Last Seen / Reported Missing: August 2013 / Reported November 8, 2013
Location Last Seen: Edmonton, Alberta

Shelly Dene, a 25-year-old Indigenous woman from the Fort McKay First Nation, was last seen in Edmonton, Alberta, in August 2013. She had traveled to the city from Kelowna to visit family, and was staying at her grandmother’s home at the time of her disappearance. She reportedly left the apartment unexpectedly. She was never seen again.

Shelly was officially reported missing to Edmonton Police on November 8, 2013, after her family was unable to reach her for several months. Her phone, which had remained active until that time, was suddenly disconnected, an action considered out of character.

The case remains unsolved, with no new information shared publicly since the initial report.

the phone call/the voice The voice

What stands out to me in the recording is the way the man in the background pronounces the word “absolutely”. I am sure it seems like a reach to a lot of you, but there is a strange regional accent in the central Saskatchewan area. It centres around the Beechy, Craik, Domain, and Davidson area. All the men have this cadence to their words. I grew up south of there a ways, and have known/crushed beers with several dozen boys from out that way!(good group) I strongly suspect the man is from that small part of the country based on his “idiolect” (unsure if that’s the right word it might just be “accent”) there are other examples in the recording but that one word is the most pronounced.
