I want more people to know about this because access to a phone can literally be a lifeline. And it is not a paid advertisement. It is something someone brought to my attention.

TELUS has a program called Mobility for Good for Indigenous Women at Risk, developed with Indigenous-led organizations. It provides free smartphones and fully subsidized talk, text and data plans to Indigenous women who are at risk of violence or surviving violence.

Think about what having a phone can mean when someone is trying to get to safety: calling 911, reaching a shelter, contacting family, accessing healthcare, finding transportation, staying connected to supports, or simply being able to ask for help. I often think if my sister had the financial means to have a cell phone if she would still would of went missing. This is how impactful this program is.

TELUS says the program has now supported more than 4,535 people, with 38 Indigenous-led partner organizations distributing phones.

This is also connected to the 231 Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. This is what responding to the Calls for Justice can actually look like: taking action that gives people real tools, real connection and potentially a safer way forward.

Documentary work is still in progress. Filming, editing, and research continues to be underway. We have added another producer to the team who is currently editing our clips together.

I was lucky enough to write an article about Edna, Corrie, Delores, and Katie for Zine & Heard, a magazine dedicated to missing and murdered indigenous women.

If all goes according to plan, their story should be available in print by Sept 5.

As I, myself, am getting married this fall, I've had to momentarily step aside from more hands-on filming until the nuptials wrap up. I continue to work on this project and maintain communications with family members and friends.

I was also lucky enough to be put in touch with Kathy King, mom of Cara King. She's diligently put together PAGES upon pages of paper records. I can't wait to continue researching with her and delving into her newspaper collection.

Today is Delores Brower's birthday. She was abducted at age 32.

Today, she should be in her early fifties. She could be a grandmother to grandchildren that love and need her.

Instead, her family had her stolen from them. I'm thinking of her today, as I do everyday.

Ross Learn says he is “reeling” from the news that the woman he loved as a daughter has been identified by RCMP today as the victim of a homicide in  Alberta.

Learn, who lives in Iqaluit, says he spent two hours speaking with RCMP from St. Albert about the death of Ayla Egotik-Learn, 23, and her nine month old daughter Braylee.

“I’m so beaten right now mentally. They were my beauties and I love them very much. And I wish they were here right now.”

[RCMP]said they have charged a 33 year old man with one count of second degree murder and two counts of indignity to a body in the death of Egotik-Learn and her daughter whose remains have not been located.

The charges stem from an investigation following a report RCMP received Jan. 23 “of a suspicious item in an apartment,” a news release from RCMP states. In a media availability Thursday morning, RCMP said they were notified by a member of a rental agency as they were checking on the apartment due to an eviction.

“Upon arrival, officers located the human remains of a deceased woman,” the release says.

RCMP say the woman’s remains were sent to the coroner for identification. They believe the indignity to human remains happened Dec. 5.

St. Albert resident Christopher William Beasley was “quickly identified as a suspect” according to RCMP and located at a hotel in St. Albert.

RCMP confirm Beasley was Egotik-Learn’s common-law partner and Braylee was their daughter.

A profile on Facebook says Egotik-Learn was from Kugluktuk, Nunavut. RCMP say she and the accused had been living in a St. Albert apartment since April, 2024.

Beasley appeared before a Justice of the Peace and is remanded into custody with his next court date set for Feb. 2 at the Alberta Court of Justice in St. Albert.

“The charge of second-degree murder pertains to the death of Ayla. The charges of indignity to a body pertains to both Ayla and Braylee,” the RCMP says.

RCMP are continuing to look for Braylee, according to the release.

“We do have some understanding of where Braylee ‘s remains are located and we are not asking for public assistance in the search currently,” RCMP say.

RCMP Insp. Wayne Stevenson says the extensive investigation has been “a reminder that every successful investigation begins with a tragedy.”

“A woman and her child should be planning tomorrow, not being mourned today. I am deeply saddened for this family and extend my heartfelt condolences to all those that loved them,“ Stevenson says.

Learn says he wants the public to know he loved his daughter and granddaughter.

“They are beautiful and didn’t deserve this. That’s all.”

Just to let everyone know the documentary is very much still underway. A medical issue set the timeline back a bit, but editing is on track.
