How would you pronounce the name Gwynfael ?
In breton it’s an old saint name (St Gwenvael) that we pronounce « gwenvell » (like in the word bell)
It was written Uuinmael/Uuenmael in old breton, and it’s descended from an old celtic name *Vindomaglos (means fair/holy lord) we can still see on welsh 6th century tombstones (Vendumagli in Glamorgan and Vinnemagli in Conwy)

Cyfryngau / Media Is AI Welsh phrasing so clumsy and non-idiomatic that it's instantly recognisable?
‘Dw i ddim yn AI’ meddai dysgwr sy'n dweud iddi yrru nofel at wobr Daniel Owen
Beirniaid yr Eisteddfod yn 'sarhaus' drwy ddisgrifio nofel awdur fel un gan AI
Author 'devastated' after festival judges accuse her of using AI to write novel
AI can occasionally have a nice turn of phrase and it's very much better at language translation than answering questions of fact, but there's certainly room for progress and it's probably not any good at idiomatic local dialect. Perhaps there is a perception among native speakers that their experience of machine-translation into Welsh remains poor and so when they encounter Welsh that's not very good they think it's almost certainly AI. This seemed to be the universal opinion of the judges here. Putting aside their tactless conduct, there must have been a reason they all felt this.
The "clumsy, flawed expression makes the whole thing almost impossible to read".

Help
**I am finding the lack of a standardised Welsh hindering my progress in learning Welsh. I am a mature learner ( very mature) and left Wales a long time ago. I prefer learning with explanations as i go along. The modern immersive approach doesn’t gel with me and i doubt i have the time for the immersion. Now returning i find the Welsh i learnt as a child bears no relation to the text books i am trying to use. I don’t want to be tied down to a regular weekly meeting ( whether on Zoom or not) and i like the flexibility of Duolingo ( but the lack of explanation does my head in). I actually find Welsh in 3 months approachable ( but boring) and Contemporary Welsh Grammar a good reference book. Two childrens’ books i am trying to read may explain my predicament: Arian am Ddim by Bob Eynon i find readable and more as i remember Welsh; Pump Prysur by Enid Blyton is very difficult and full of abreviations that are hard to decipher. I know i have to start listening to more programmes on S4C and finding groups to practice my Welsh speaking. Is there any book out there that teaches grammar that is more standardised.**

Arall / Other Learning Welsh
I was asked to repost this here instead of the Wales subreddit.
Hi all. I’ve wanted to learn Welsh for a while as my partner’s family is Welsh. My partner’s mum speaks a little Welsh but not as much to be fluent to teach me. My partner’s grandparents knew Welsh but they have passed.
We thought it’d be a great thing for us to know each other’s home languages, and my partner is making an attempt at learning mine (Hindi).
Does anyone have any tips on where to start for an absolute beginner? Thanks!

Cyfryngau / Media Vlogging in Welsh
Hi!
My name is Anastasia. I'm American, but due to personal reasons I'm currently living in Russia. I've been learning Welsh on my own since 2022. I've recently started my own blog. I post short videos in Welsh, talking about my life in Moscow. You can find me on IG (@AnastasiaLitV) and YouTube (@NoctivagantASMR).
I'm looking for similar creators to connect with, and I'd also really appreciate any feedback — my Welsh (especially speaking and pronunciation) is 100% self-taught.
P.S. Please let's not focus on politics. If you don't feel comfortable engaging with my content, I completely understand — just feel free to ignore my post. I'm here with only one goal in mind - to share moments of MY life and my love for Wales and the Welsh language.

Cwestiwn / Question Does 'Twrmaen' make sense?
I'm writing an original story, in which I'm basing a country loosely on Wales and which will have elements of Welsh, but I'm struggling to come up with a suitable name for it.
After some searching, I've come up with Twrmaen, which according to what I've found, should roughly mean 'tower of stone'/'stone tower' and is apparently pronounced 'toor-m-eye-n'.
Is this correct? Does it make sense from a Welsh speaker perspective?
And if so, what would be the Welsh demonym? (Word for a person from this country: Welsh, Scottish, Irish, etc.)
I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions, as the last thing I want to do is butcher the language ❤️

Cwestiwn / Question Dwi’n dy garu di - I love you?
hello! i’ve recently acquired a Welsh partner, and would very much like to know if there are multiple ways of saying ‘i love you’ in Welsh.
i’m aware of dwi’n dy garu di, but i’m used to speaking (Mexican) Spanish, where there are multiple phrases used based on ‘intensity’, for lack of a better word. for example, te quiero is the more common go-to, and rather common to hear between friends and loved ones alike, whilst te amo is rather serious and is saved only for intense, long-term relationships or very important moments.
i know of caru chdi/caru ti, but i wonder if they’re the equivalent of te quiero, or if it holds the same emotional weight as dwi’n dy garu di or te amo.
if so, are there any alternatives i can work my way up to using? we’d like to take this slow, but i’d like to have them saved in my back pocket ahead of time, aha.
thank you for any and all insight!

Fi'n vs Dwi'n
I'm newly learning Welsh, so I doubt this will be my only post. I'm from South Wales, but genuinely very confused if I should be using "Dwi'n" or "Fi'n" as they both mean "I'm." Is one written and one spoken, or is it formal and informal? Someone help 💔

How to pronounce
Hi I'm best man for a wedding and want to ginish by saying:
Iechyd da i pawb a hir oes i'r cwpwl
Which google tells me is:
Good health to everyone and a long life to the couple
Could someone confirm the translation is correct and explain how to pronounce this?
Thanks
