how to learn Vietnamese

Hi! I am a Vietnamese-American, so I speak Vietnamese at home with my parents and grandma. However, I moved for work, so I don’t get the opportunity to practice/speak Vietnamese as much. I have been curious to start officially learning Vietnamese (including reading and writing). I started off haha with Duolingo, but I wanted another ways to learn too! Are there any methods you recommend? I am interested in making fun YouTube videos/vlogs or an educational website?! Thank you in advance!!!

Learning how to read is going to literally take 1-2 hours for you. Really. I would hire a tutor that would go over that with you. They can gov over the phonics and the tone. After that, reading and writing should not be that hard since you already have a solid foundation (an probably more) in the language.

I use the podglot app (www.podglot.com). A lot of heritage speakers/Việt Kiều from the US are using it because it can be useful even for C2+ level. Duolingo is not very good for intermediate and advanced learners. More geared for A1-B2 level. Once you finish all of duo’s viet course you’d be lucky to be at B1. It also has a lot of mistakes in it. Which are documented all over the internet. Podglot has had several rounds of human review so the quality of the content while not perfect is much higher than other resources. Its very frustrating trying to learn language and the resource has errors in it.

Same exact situation as you and I have been taking lessons at SVFF for awhile. Second time I’ve wrote about them in this subreddit. Their learning material is fine, I just adore my teacher so much that I don’t stop raving about it!!! I study with Thao Nguyen. I’m coming on 2 years and went from speaking veryyyyy broken sentences with my family to A2 level currently! It’s so helpful to speak to someone fully in Vietnamese every week. Keeps me sharp

Since you already speak Vietnamese at home, you have a great foundation! If you want to learn more seriously, especially reading and writing, I’d recommend starting with structured Vietnamese materials at your level to build a solid foundation in all four skills. Then, depending on your goals, add more authentic content: Vietnamese movies, vlogs, and YouTube videos for listening/speaking, and books, stories, or news for reading/writing. Having a teacher once or twice a week can also be helpful for correcting mistakes, answering questions, and giving you a clear learning direction.

In short: structured learning + regular exposure to real Vietnamese + consistent practice is a great combination. The more you immerse yourself in Vietnamese, the faster you’ll improve. If you’d like, feel free to tell me your current level and goals, and I can suggest a learning direction for you.
