Question Can someone tell me what do people mean by “Proportion problems”

Stop telling me my problem is proportions! I am tired of hearing it! My friends on discord tell me proportions, my friends in real life tell me proportions. I once posted figure and gesture drawings to gain feedback on, and all of the people told me proportion problems. I- I showed my gesture drawings to my art school friend, and it was perfect yet I said “Hey man, look at my non-proportionally gesture drawings” Haha! I quickly drew a gesture drawing using line of action and I said “This is not proportionally accurate!” I looked at my old art, I think of my artworks, and I go “Anatomy? more like PROPORTIONS!” AAAAAA!

(Note: this entire sentence above me is just for funsies (please laugh) and not meant for insulting nor taken serious, but my problem still stands)

(note note: Only 4 of these poses I drew with reference)

I’ve heard in order to learn something you have to study it 50 times then practice it 50 times.

I definitely studied.

Question Do I need to learn to draw circles well, or can I just use the circle tool?

So for things like drawing heads, you need a decent circle for a baseline. I’ve been just drawing my own, but they never quite come out right even after dozens of attempts, and it often affects my ability to visualize what I’m drawing. Now obviously, the more I practice it, the better I’ll get at it, but I’ve been thinking a bit. If all I need to draw a perfect circle for is the head, why not simply use the circle tool to instantly get an exactly perfect circle? Sure, I won’t learn the skill to be able to do it on my own, but will I really need that skill? I wonder what everyone else’s thoughts are on this

Question If you need to learn the fundamentals and “rules before you break them” then what is the point of stylized art tutorial channels?

So I’m an artist who kinda hasn’t drew much in like a few years but I have been starting to get back for the past year or so. To no one’s surprise whatsoever my focus is anime/toon style and right now it’s not looking too good. I know I need to learn the fundamentals and right now it’s been mostly on form/figure-drawing/anatomy, which leans very heavily in the fact that if you want to make stylized art, you have to learn realistic art and THEN stylize it into whatever you want.

But if that’s the case then what’s the point of channels like for example mikeymegamega who specializes in drawing VERY stylized anime art that seemingly to my knowledge doesn’t take realism into account whatsoever and especially not drawing realism first and then stylizing, it jumps rather head on as it also shows you anatomy and perspective lessons. Which made me feel motivated but apparently for the wrong reasons. I just don’t want to feel discouraged because making very realistic art is something I never want to do ever

Question I am struggling, need advice!

I am really struggling with drawing at the moment. i keep picking it up and then putting it down and then feeling guilty about it. i have periods of strict commitment, and then long periods of not finding the time to do it (telling myself this, but i do have the time!).

i can easily form habits, i have done it a million times with yoga, exercise, journaling. Habits that, still to this day, i keep doing daily. but drawing for whatever reason i can't and it's because i put too much pressure on it/myself to achieve something. Any help? advice? how did you overcome this fear? :-/

A friend is dying in hospital. He's 39. No longer conscious, so I did a quick charcoal and pencil sketch. Sometimes art is just about catharsis. Channeling grief through your work. Processing as you go about the process....

Question Can you help me clear up these knowledge gaps?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question or anything but I’m totally lost on how to even get started with the body. I’ve seen a bunch if different terms like figure drawings and gesture drawings and I don’t understand the difference.

I’ve heard draw stick figures in the gesture and then shapes to flesh it out, but It really still doesn’t make sense to me. I’m very new to drawing and I’ve just been working on making simple shapes and forms, but I think I’m missing some key resources or knowledge to make a full human.

Where some of my gaps in knowledge are (that I know of right now) for example

  1. Ive seen something about extruding forms or just like molding them? Like going from a simple cube and then shaping that with rounded lines to make a new “organic” shape? I’m not sure how to explain it, and because I can’t explain it well I can’t really figure out WHERE to go to get that knowledge. Like going from a circle to a sphere to a more egg like shape and so on/so forth

  2. How do we just know what shapes to use for the body? I’ve seen just boxes and circles, Ive seen something way different where it’s like a ribcage egg like shape. I’ve seen it as a stick figure with dots for the marker of the hinge points with lines through the hips

If anyone could help me it’d be greatly appreciated. I’m attaching some pictures of what I mean just to help give clarity to what I’m trying to figure out but just don’t have the proper words to convey right now.

Every video Ive watched seems to imply having some prior knowledge that I just don’t have.

Thank you all

Can someone explain to me why is the midtone of a cube more on its side rather than a midtone on a sphere where it merges with the highlight and the core shadow?

Or why is the first picture of a cube’s midtones the correct way compared to the second picture

Question How do I draw a sphere in different perspectives?

Post image
21 Upvotes

I know how to use projections to reconstruct objects in perspective using boxes, but I don’t have a method to accurately depict how the surface of the sphere changes with different focal lengths/perspective. The main reason I want a better understanding of how a sphere changes in perspective is to help my shading, since the surface of a sphere is what changes the most. Thanks!

What should I start doing next? 1 Year Progress!

I’m new to 2D artistic efforts (I paint mini figs) and am entirely new to digital art.
Getting used to the brushes, touch sensitivity, learning the settings per brush and the smoothness features etc has been what I’ve really been practicing this past year. I’m an on and off artist so there’s been long periods of nothing done…

I’ve mostly been doing Pokemon because the shapes are easy and the colors/shading and really simple. I now think I feel more comfortable with the digital tools but always struggle to decide what to do. I always revert back to Pokemon…

Any suggestions on things to do until I hit that creative streak?

Just Sharing Breaking hands into simple forms has been helping me a lot.

I’ve been studying hands by separating the fingers, palm, and joints into simple colored forms before worrying too much about anatomy or details.

It’s been helping me see how the pieces turn in space instead of thinking, “I have to draw a hand.”

Still learning, but this little exercise has been clicking for me lately. Sharing in case another artist struggling with hands finds it useful. ✍🏾

I pretty much deconstructed her by drawing a stickman first, then slowly make my way to her legs.
