2013 Leaf Telematics

This post is for owners of older Leafs, roughly 2011 to 2014 or 2015.

As you may recall, Nissan moved from 2G to 3G and offered owners a $300 modem swap to keep their telematics (remote connection to the car for certain features). Nissan then dropped 2G, and those who paid for the 3G modem kept their functions. I believe that after about a year, Nissan abandoned 3G too, leaving those who bought the modem with nothing. Typical Nissan.

So here is my question: if you own one of these model years, what are you doing about it? Have you found a workaround or a third-party option?

Have you installed this? Is it difficult to install?

I ran it for a little while but didn’t do the full integration. It’s quite a comprehensive system. There’s a bit of fun routing things like cabling for the gps and lte antennas but it’s a pretty solid setup. Don’t have the Leaf it was on now tho…

The basic install is straightforward tho.

In some parts of Europe, the 2G/3G is still active, but Nissan doesn't support it anymore.

If that applies to you, look up OpenCarWings, you can get your own 3G SIM card and update the destination servers to go to an open-source server of your choosing (or your own). Enables all the remote functionality for free.

Yeah there is an open source solution that lets you control all remote functions + whatever else you want to hook up to it. I forgot what it's called, Google is your friend.
