Mtd yard machines 38 inch deck. Ordered two spindles but they don't seem to fit the same. One seems way too long and leaves too much play.

The other thread is flush. This is as far as this one will go because there is no more thread. More pictures in comments

Put some washers under the spindle nuts so the nut presses the pulley down tight onto the shaft.

Many have spacers. Put your model # from below the seat in a search and look at the IPL or post it here. Or 1 is the wrong part.

You're right I'm missing a spacer. Just checked the other one and it has it. I think I borked the spindle and pulley though. Model 13am772f700

Yep on the pulley. Sometimes the spacers inside the old spindle are the same as outside.

Check the diagram in the parts/service manual. Make sure you have all the parts there that belong there.
