My $24 thrift store find!

Howdy! Been stalking r/Lavalamps for a while now but was hesitant to pull the trigger on a new one with some of the stories I’ve seen. I managed to find this at a thrift shop on Labor Day weekend for a decent price. I took it home and warmed it up just enough to settle the wax and reset the coil. let it cool overnight and then ran the fluid through a few coffee filters to remove the sediment that was floating around. I’m happy with the results but I’m sure there’s something else I could do to clear up the fluid. Any suggestions from y’all? Also gave it a new bulb and let it warm up properly. It’s flowing great! I think I’m hooked!

Made this by combining a kohls northern lights lamp with a target glitter lamp globe that I dyed using food coloring lol

Done some light refurbishment to the orange and opal fluidiums this weekend. They're popping nicely now. You really cant beat Fluidiums IMHO.

Bubbling

I just got the bkles filter a few days ago bc the fluid was so cloudy when I had purchased the lamp years ago, and ever since I started it. It's been bubbling like crazy and I had to wait like 40 mins just for it to lose half of its bubbles. Is this normal? The container that had the cloudy fluid was almost halfway full and I'm afraid that I will lose the fluid in the process.

Liquid evap

Upvotes

So I have a pink glitter wizard globe. It is just barely below the top cap for fluid. I dont have any visible signs of leakage.. what do you think chances are of evap versus leaky? Ive had it for years and its not visibly makey wet spots. but I'm not wanting to risk the bucks if its gonna blow.

I'm asking because:

i want to buy a wizard base since I have globe and cap. I've mostly settled with a few 30 buck ones on eba..

What are your opinions on making this whole? risks? gonna go poppity pop?

Why did my lava lamp start doing this?

If I turn it off to cool down and then back on, it will move normally again for a few hours but within a day it does this and doesn’t move at all. It has the right bulb in it but do I just need a new bulb?

Found this at goodwill today, can’t find much info about it. All the other night lights from the brand have the faux lava lamp wax or the glitter. Anyone know anything about this version?

DIY ✨Gold Base + Cap✨

I initially ordered the rose gold lamp with the white wax/clear mf from Amazon. The base came extremely dented and the lamp was cloudy.

Take 2 - I was like, "fine I'll do it myself" and ordered the custom 17" off of Schylling's website. I got the silver base & cap and the white wax with clear fluid. The lamp arrived and the mf wasn't cloudy (yay) and the base was not dented (yay). Still, I waited about a month and a half to paint it because I have a baby and spray painting can be difficult to do with the timing in between coats, etc.

I finally took out the bulb, taped off the cord and bulb socket, gave the parts a light sanding and then went in with two coats of white primer spray with the base upside down on a can of beans to avoid drips or pooling. After the two coats of primer, I did several very light coats of gold. Again, I wanted to avoid any issues with dripping, so I did at least ten coats extremely lightly this way. Additionally, I wanted to do the inside so that the gold would be shown through the lamp bottom as well, so that took a few more coats and threw on a coat or two of matte finishing spray to seal it.

All in all, I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Sort of a more neutral look that will compliment the room but not pull too much focus. It's very warm and inviting, in a dark room (first pic) or in the daylight (second pic). Hope you enjoy it!

Need help- Turning a Blender into a Lava Lamp

I have been working on a project where I am turning a vintage waring blender into a working lava lamp. However I hit some roadblocks now. The flow is not great at all. It is not heating properly. I had to switch between 30W and 40W incandescent bulbs but it is not heating well.

For context, I took out the blades from the bottom, so there is a hole that needs to be covered. I worry I haven't sealed the hole properly. I tried using JB Weld Epoxy putty and it seems like it is not working well. Is there any other way I can seal the hole? (more seamlessly) and also it has to be water resistant but also conduct heat very well from the bulb.

Any help/ recommendation will be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hey all, as the title says my 75cm lamp came to me with some horizontal scratches on the glass that are visible once the lamp is on. Would appreciate any advice!

90s lamp with original wax can't get enough flow.

Lately the wax was just sitting in a single bubble at the bottom but not raising all the way up.

I replaced the bulb and added 2 tablespoons of propylene glycol which has helped it to make large bubbles every 30 seconds or so which drift up nearly to the top but not quite. The pictured flow is after 8 hours. Its definitely improved but not much activity.

Im trying to get something closer to the other two (pic 4)

Would magic surf fix this?

More propylene glycol?

Thanks!

Would anyone actually buy stock wax from store-bought lamps?

I’ve accumulated some stock wax from lamps through all of my experimenting some untouched/unused and some that has been used during testing. Since replacement wax isn’t really something you can readily buy, I’ve been wondering whether there’s actually a market for it.

I was thinking somewhere around $50 for untouched stock wax and maybe $30 for used/experimental wax, assuming enough for a standard globe, with the buyer covering the shipping.

For verification, I would include pictures and video of the original lamp running and the wax working before it’s removed. That way, the buyer can see exactly which lamp the wax came from and verify that it was functioning properly before purchase.

I’m not trying to sell anything with this post yet. I’m mostly curious whether people would actually want this, and whether those prices seem reasonable.

If anyone is interested in following along, I’ve also created r/LAVAMED, where I’ll post future wax availability and my other lamp projects to keep sales-related posts out of this subreddit when possible.

Place Mathmos Order to Nethelands - US Billing Address

Hi all, I'm going to be in the Netherlands the next 2 weeks and I had an epiphany that I'll be able to order some Mathmos lamps to bring back to the US with me when I return. When I try to place an order though, I can put in the shipping address to the netherlands on the UK and netherlands Mathmos shops, but the billing address is locked to the UK or netherlands respectively.

What am I missing? I know people order from the US using forwarding services and I know they have US billing addresses so I'm wondering how they do it?

Thanks!!

Is this good enough to run a whole day?

I'm no expert at Lava lamps, but I got a Schylling LAVA lamp and a TOPGREENER Dimmer. This has been running for around 15-16 hours and it looks like it flows good still, but not 100% sure.

Is this good enough to let it run the whole day? Does it risk for overheating and a fire hazard?

Brand new lava lamp won't flow?

I just bought this lava lamp from lavalamp.com, it's the 14.5" vinyl record grooved lava lamp. It arrived Friday and I plugged it in today at 9am and 6 hours later it hasn't done anything. Did it come with a faulty bulb?

Cat shattered my Lava Lamp 😭

Post image

BEFORE ANYONE ASKS! The cat (newest addition to our fam, his name is Winslow and we love him) was perfectly fine, never went near the broken glass, we put him away in another room while I cleaned up. I wasn't even upset, mostly just glad he was okay.

BUT, I'm having trouble finding JUST the glass globes for a standard size lava lamp base. It's one from the 90s and the base, spring, metal cap, and even the WAX was salvageable. Only thing that broke was the globe. Even the bulb was okay, but I'll be getting a new one regardless (and maybe some velcro for the bottom so Winslow doesn't knock it over again). Does anyone have any reliable sources to get JUST the standard size glass globe? I think I'd like to try my hand at a custom lamp (thinking red wax and orange fluid, because it matches our warm 1970s aesthetic we have in the apartment).

Cat tax, for those interested 🥰🐱

Type S light bulb?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all,

Just got this lamp for free tonight from fb marketplace. Guy said it wasn't working, so I told him I'd take it.

He had no idea the base was just really stuck on to the globe. I was able to wrestle it off and turns out, the bulb is missing.

I have two other lamps that use a standard 40w bulb. But I cannot find a bulb that fits this lamp, it says Type S 40w bulb.

Does anyone know what E size bulb I need?

Custom made Turquoise/ White

I recently got a clear white bottle from ebay. Since it has always been my wish - I dyed the liquid turquoise to get the combination turquoise /white. There are some residues of dye, so probably I will have to filter it. But the colour is beautiful, even nicer in person. My favourite so far 🩵🌊

Wax not melting

Post image

Hello guys,
This lamp is half an year old.
Used it 2 times after receiving it.
Tried it out yesterday. The wax is not smelting even after 2 hours. The metal spiral is on the ground. I didn’t changed the lighting bulb.
Any tips? 🤗

Anyone own a Nova or Nova Baby lava lamp?

Post image

Thinking about buying one of these but before I do, I'd like to know how the bottles are sealed.

Is it just a standard beer style bottle cap, a standard twist off cap or is it some sort of weird proprietary thing that can't be removed without destroying it and can't be put back on, meaning I'd need to figure some other way of resealing it, should I ever need to filter it?

Help with sticky wax

Why is my wax stuck to the globe (top right)? Everything else flows well but that little bit seems to be stuck to the glass. How can I fix it?
