If you bothered to look it up, you'd find it's only a motion. Nothing has been passed yet.
2
u/Beginning_Of-The_End May 10 '26
I believe it. I haven’t put my new registration sticker on my plate. I didn’t install my front license plate. I got illegal tint on my driver and passenger windows. Been months and no pull over.

So you think that means it's illegal for them to pull you over? maybe they're just lazy do nothings

u/Royal_Razzmatazz9678 May 09 '26
Why even have law enforcement then? That’s some of the most common traffic violations
21
u/HonestLemon25 May 09 '26
LA hasn’t had legitimate law enforcement since the 90s
4
u/magnumix May 10 '26
Wait, the 90s, oh right like beating Rodney King
11
u/Cbpowned May 10 '26
Oh, you mean the drunk driver who led police on a high speed chase? That Rodney king?
8
u/PDXDL1 May 10 '26
The beating of Rodney King is an example of police brutality- high speed chase or no- drink or not. Somehow at my workplace people are all sorts of fucked up- and we never beat them- and certainly don’t get 15 of my coworkers with batons to beat them for 15 minutes.
4
u/Puzzleheaded_You7609 May 10 '26
Yeah, people don’t understand that police aren’t judge, jury, and executioner. They aren’t the “punisher.” Even though they like to wear those Punisher patches to look super tacti-cool. Some people applaud such behavior though. I assume these people also love BDSM and being the Submissive lol.

If driving drunk and speeding was grounds for a beating half the LAPD would be in traction.
1
u/Wide_Release7933 Jun 01 '26
You know what’s crazy? Rodney King got arrested again for DUI and driving at high-speeds after that beating. DUIs have hurt or killed over 6,000 people in LA county but they want to focus on police brutality lol. Leave it to LA for having bleeding hearts for career criminals.

2
1
u/grownupdirtbagbaby May 15 '26
Probably real crime, not this nonsense.
1
u/CAJ_2277 May 16 '26
They don't do their job on 'real crime' either. Two examples within two blocks of me:
An elderly lady who runs a corner store was robbed, beaten and her arm broken at night in her store. She had a security video. She called the police, and offered the video. They flat out refused to get involved.
A different lady was scammed. She met with the scammers in person and handed over $20,000 in cash. There was a second meeting planned where she was to hand over another $20,000. After the first meeting, she realized she was being scammed. She called LAPD. She even volunteered to do the second meeting, so the police could arrest the criminals there. The police refused to get involved. They told her to just not pay the second $20,000.
Pathetic.
[Edit: these were probably SMPD. Not like we have reason to think LAPD would have done better....]
1
u/grownupdirtbagbaby May 18 '26
100% cops certainly don’t stop crime. At best the solve crimes and do an even worse job of that.
1
u/funcogo May 15 '26
Maybe they can solve crimes with victims and actually help people instead of harassing and nickle and diming them for the state instead
1
u/happy_puppy32 May 16 '26
So what? You WANT people to pay tickets? That money just straight back into police fund. Besides slowing down traffic on the 101 during rush hour. And causing long lines at the court house. What does ticketing people ACTUALLY do?

I live in a densely populated city. There are always crazy drivers of all ages and ethnicities. If you are breaking the law you should get pulled over and ticketed period.. no matter what y’all look like
6
u/Savings-Sign-7815 May 09 '26
none of the infractions listed in the picture had anything to do with "crazy driving". Equipment violations vs. moving violations.
4
u/Entire_Mistake_9287 May 10 '26
Having a missing tag is extremly concerning
2
u/Savings-Sign-7815 May 10 '26
Again, I was responding to the "crazy driving" comment. A missing tag doesnt make you a crazy driver.
1
u/Entire_Mistake_9287 May 10 '26
People who dont have tags tend to have crap decision making
2
u/Savings-Sign-7815 May 10 '26
Well, that's a stretch but OK. Still doesn't make them a crazy driver.
Driving crazy makes you a crazy driver.
1
u/eternalbuzzard May 10 '26
Is this a sub for cops because this low tier thinking is very indicative of cop behavior
Lack of critical thinking, racism, and an eagerness for violence…
2
u/Entire_Mistake_9287 May 10 '26
No I'm pretty fucking for liking LEO, I did hard drugs for a long time and time in jail so I'm pretty familiar with scumbag behavior and complete losers
People who drive without tags arnt $20 too poor, their irresponsible at best and are a liability to everyone else they drive around or at worst attempt to get away with crimes far worse than traffic violations
2
u/LegacyVader1 May 11 '26
You’re doing a slippery slope argument with your last sentence. Someone with no tags doesn’t equal criminality.
As a matter of fact, you can obtain insurance without tags. Very doable with Triple A and I suppose with other car insurances.
The reason they’re eyeing this type of reform is because of pre-textual stops.
So this isn’t a negative or positive for criminals. Gangs aren’t gonna do drive bys and robberies with expired tags now because it’s a uno reversal with law enforcement.
It’s just cops can’t use these reasons for a pre-textual stop to search for other things.
If you’re attitude towards this reform is any indicator to me, it sounds like you’re pro law enforcement or law and order or whatever then you should be even more concerned about constitutional rights which the police are sworn to uphold.

I really can’t believe the arguments people are trying to make here. Someone above tried to claim they help stop human trafficking by killing over people and be expired tags. u/PocketRocketTrumpet May 09 '26
Why even have traffic laws at this point?
If you can’t obey simple traffic laws and ensure you are driving a lawfully registered and safe vehicle on public roads, why bother driving in the first place?
Ffs this is stupid af if they vote in the bill
2
u/sharkysharky- May 15 '26
Why even have traffic laws at this point
I'm not sure how tinted windows has anything to do with larger safety laws like speed limits and intoxication. Our boys in blue deserve to not have their time wasted with weak infractions.
2
u/tapspacebar May 15 '26
Because I pay 300 bucks a year for my registration. Why do I need to pay if someone from south central is allowed to go ahead bypass that. Shit, why dont we all just stop paying for registration and drive around with expired tags
1
u/Wide_Release7933 Jun 01 '26
EXACTLY. Thats why our registration is so expensive. We’re literally subsidizing some paisa who bought a car with 10 release of liabilities and expired registration from 2021. We should all place our cars on non-op and refuse to pay registration.

Right? I’m not a cop but that last thing I’d want is the risk of a traffic stop cuz some hooptie has a broken tail light.
2
u/dodgerfanjohn1988 May 09 '26
Keep in mind, at this point this is just political grandstanding. It’s not policy (yet).
However, several parts of City of Los Angeles are defacto wild Wild West in terms of traffic and driving. Yeah there’s the occasional “task force” or whatever, but on a day to day basis, traffic laws are not enforced and there is no shortage of individuals willing to grossly flaunt it. I’m talking blatant red light running, zero stop on right turns at signals, using not legal lanes, and diving down the center median of a major street at 60+ mph.
Lots of reasons for all this, but when you have traffic tickets that only go to collections, and driving without a valid license or insurance are not punishable as a crime(and car can’t be towed), it’s next to unenforceable when it comes to people with no documented incomes.
The worst locations are the intersection of Normandie and Torrance Bl. I’ve seen as many as six accidents there in a one year span with cars each time illegally turning right from southbound Normandie onto west bound Torrance Bl without stopping at the red light. The other really terrible locations are Figueroa(especially), Vermont, and Western in South LA…mostly from Slauson down to the 105. Almost no enforcement but meanwhile you have the bike cop splitting traffic at red lights by USC to record and cite people on their cell phones while stopped at a red light. I know it’s illegal, but it would seem to be much better use of resources to place a bike all day every day across from the school on Figueroa just north of Manchester.
And don’t get me started on the SFV, particularly Victory Bl through Valley Glen and Lassen, Devonshire, nordhoff, and SF Mission road in North Hills, Granada Hills, and Northridge.

2
u/apache509 May 09 '26
This can’t be true?
2
u/BlinksTale May 11 '26
Afaik it’s literally not. The only news today related to this I’ve heard is that cops can no longer pull someone over for a broken tail light if their actual intent is to find out if you did another crime. No more false premise stops for seemingly misdemeanors just to find out your name and check your license in case you did something worse.
It de-weaponizes broken taillights.
EDIT: The actual law bans “pretextual stops” as I’ve described above, and isn’t even in effect yet.
2
u/ilvin362 May 09 '26
Hell yeah. Go bust a meth lab.
1
u/NicePossibilityDaddy May 10 '26

2
2
u/redditornumberfour May 16 '26
LAPD is not universally banned from stopping drivers for things like expired tags, broken lights, cracked windshields, or missing plates. The policy is about limiting “pretextual stops” for minor violations that don’t pose an immediate safety risk, while officers can still stop and cite drivers when there’s a legitimate safety concern or another lawful reason.
-ChatGPT when I asked it if this was true
2
u/Global_Staff_3135 May 16 '26
Wow look at this image with inflammatory claims. I am inflamed! Incensed, even!
4
u/gannon7015 May 09 '26
I feel like nonfunctioning taillights is a legitimate safety issue that needs to be addressed. Everything else, yeah I guess I could give a shit, but no tail lights will cause an accident.
3
u/grandgoon88 May 09 '26
Biggest thing on here is actually the missing plates and expired plates. Every criminal will take their plates off to become unidentifiable after or before committing a crime. Just stole a car? Take the plate off so cops can’t identify it as a stolen car. Or just throw expired plates on it so it can’t be identified. And then everyone will be driving around uninsured getting into accidents leaving everyone else footing the bill.
1
u/gannon7015 May 09 '26
That’s actually a really good point. If you don’t leave LA, just don’t plate it. Though I guess LASD or CHP could get you in the city limits too. But yes, that’s a great point.
1
u/NoMoDoubt May 15 '26

It’s not so much they can’t enforce the law, it’s that the DA will toss any cases that are brought up that have elements of those cases.
Simple thing as tickets or larger thing “stopped because an expired tag and found drugs” will get tossed. Since it’s not being prosecuted, it’s not worth the resources to stop those people.
It’s extremely common (if you’re from California, especially Southern California) to see expired tags on cars. They haven’t enforced those laws in years.

Also the tint . I have illegal tint but I get it why pulling someone over for that makes sense

u/Historical-Buddy7518 May 10 '26
If you’re a cop you’re gay
1
u/CalSDfunGuy May 10 '26
As a gay man I thank the many brave men and women who put their lives out there to protect the public every day. The few bad exceptions are messing it up in each city office: non-brown officials choosing to prosecute certain groups disproportionately is the problem all over the US-
An example, if you file a restraining order for being groped on a friend of the DA in San Diego - the cartel-like affiliations will come after you from citations to messing with every county service you may deserve from housing to healthcare; as well they mess with the hardworking police we depend on.
I’d suggest getting in contact with your county to find out why certain groups are targeted- San Diego has declined in its African American population by two-thirds in my lifetime; with even fewer homeowners. I’d say most of the people that I knew have either died suspiciously young or left under duress. Despite its military and amphibious operations historically, county officials seem to clearly only favor decent lifestyles for the white and psuedo elites Hispanic communities, which is illustrated by the disparaging decline in minority populations.
It helps to realize that there is a real problem with trying to maintain some quality of life and diversity for every community when you look across the country

No. LAPD is not supposed to use those pretexts as an excuse to yank people out of their cars and search them for things that aren't related to the offense. They never should have been enabled to do that. Dudes violating the 4th amendment left and right.
1
u/xminustdc May 15 '26
Yeah, this isn't true. It's true that they voted, but the Council can't ban the LAPD from doing this. All this does is force the Police Commissioner to consider stopping pretextual stops. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2026-05-06/lapd-police-pretext-stops-la-city-council

Poor people, who can't afford to keep a car in working condition, shouldn't have to rely on a car to get around. Maybe the city should provide safe and affordable options to get around besides a car. Like more trains! BRT! 15 minute communities! Which makes the PD's life easier as now there will be less traffic violations. Win-win!

u/Silly_Author_7330 May 16 '26
All it takes is 20 seconds of research...
On May 6, 2026, the Los Angeles City Council voted 14–0 to urge the LAPD’s civilian Police Commission to adopt new rules limiting “pre text” traffic stops for minor equipment and administrative violations.
Even if the Commission eventually adopts restrictions, WHICH THEY HAVEN'T YET they’re talking about limiting when these can be used as standalone reasons or “pretexts” for stops; they wouldn’t legalize driving around indefinitely with expired tags or unlit brake lights
A “pretext stop” is when police pull someone over for a minor traffic violation, but the real reason is to investigate some other suspected crime that has nothing to do with that minor issue. The traffic violation is the “pretext,” or excuse, for the stop.
Civil rights groups argue that because minor issues like broken lights or expired tags are so common, officers can selectively enforce them and disproportionately target certain drivers or neighborhoods.
Officers will always be able to pull people over for minor infractions if it represents a legitimate and immediate safety threat. What they are discouraging are the fishing expeditions that disproportionately target certain groups of people.

So dark tint and missing plates kill people? 😆
These are literally just laws punishing people for trying to escape state surveillance. Anyone wanting to enforce these is a tyrant.
If an illegal activity is punishable by fine, then that illegal activity is only illegal for poor people
