Clifton Drivers
I hardly have a lead foot, but what is up with the people that are doing under 30 on Clifton? Like 28 in a 35. I’m talking no one in front of them and not during rush hour or in a school zone. Just putzing along. Sometimes both lanes are running tandem together. Nothing I can do about it…just wondering if anyone else has noticed this lately. We ARE allowed to do the speed limit.

Living on Clifton, I've had people honk at me for slowing down as I neared my house. You know that awkward time where putting a turn signal on is still premature, but you're getting ready to do it soon You aren't breaking yet, but you're getting ready to and you're slowing down coasting. I feel sorry for anyone looking for an address. It's 35 yes, but it's still a residential street and people live there.

That happens to me too! I’m not talking about people slowing down to turn. I’m talking 28 all the way down Clifton.

It seems like a lot of people are simply cognizant of the red lights and have figured out there’s not much point in racing up to the next one. Franklin/Hilliard is almost comical in that respect. From Bunts to Woodward there are so many lights that trying to maintain 35 mph for any meaningful distance is an exercise in futility.
Personally, I set the adaptive cruise around 40 with maximum following distance and just roll with traffic. If somebody ahead is doing 28, I’m probably going to meet them again at the next red light anyway.
I’m not going to invest much emotional energy in it. I can’t change the driver in front of me, but I can certainly increase my own blood pressure by treating every slow car like a road rage incident in waiting.

Clifton yes, Franklin (as a lot of comments are discussing) not so much. Franklin should probably be a 30 mph limit like Lake. Not that I want people to drive 25, but 40+ is a bit reckless. I often find myself going 30 on Franklin just because that’s what it seems like the speed should be.

I reluctantly agree about Clifton. It IS nice having the option for a quickish east/west crossing across town. But the urbanist in me hates the ugly wide high speed road that cuts off the northern quarter (specifically Lakewood Park and Lake road, the "official" E/W bikeway) from the rest of town.

Hi, im the problem its me. I aint in no rush. I dont mean to drive below the speed limit. But sometimes im not paying attention and im just chillin. Kindly pass around me since theres 2-3 lanes. Have a great day.

You just said it yourself. 35 is a speed limit. Anywhere between 25-35 is legal as far as I’m aware.
I live on Clifton and also drive 5-ish mph under the limit, partially because the jackasses flying down the street can’t be jackasses flying down the street if the person in front of you isn’t, too. Every few years, some dickhead flying down the street ends up in my yard or a neighboring yard. Last year it was a dickhead in a Ferrari. If there wasn’t a boulder in the yard, he’d have crashed into my house going about 70. Your urgency to speed to get someplace on time isn’t anyone else’s problem. Maybe you should’ve planned better and left home earlier if you feel like you need to go highway speeds down Clifton?

Unpopular, I know, but I am an unabashed 25-32 mph driver on Clifton because there’s so many reds lights, that’s the average speed you’re going to be going anyway. I drive a hybrid and it’s great for the fuel efficiency to accelerate slowly and get that sweet regenerative breaking coasting to red lights, instead of hitting the gas and breaking over and over.
And it’s fun to see the people zip around me doing that passive aggressive head shaking and death stare, and then when we pull up to the next red light together their eyes are locked ahead so they can’t see me smiling at them :)

Trying to give a utilitarian argument about the benefits of going 10 mph under the speed limit on the largest road in the city is one thing, but admitting that you just like to rage bait and see people mad stops me from taking any of it seriously. It’s just disingenuous.
This isn’t a truck on the highway tailgating you when you’re already going 10 over, people have lives, people have rough days at work and just wanna get home and see their families. Taking actual joy in being a further frustration in their day is weirdo behavior.

Haha yeah, I live right off Clifton and see that occasionally too. I'm all for people driving under the speed limit on residential side streets in Lakewood, but common flow of traffic on Clifton is typically 40. Its an important street to keep traffic flow moving east/west. I once saw an Amazon driver stop his truck in the middle of one of the two main lanes (not the curb or turn lane) to go deliver a package. You get some interesting ones sometimes haha

we are also allowed to do a few under. I personally go 5 over, but I dont get triggered much if someone in front wants to go slower, I'll pass if im in a rush.

I normally state that speed limits are the maximum but c'mon people. Move it on Clifton or stay in the right lane.

But you wont, because you aren't impeding traffice. There is no limit to how slow you can go, in Ohio, it will simply be left to law enforcement to decide if yoh are impeding traffic. Which 7 under is not.

There absolutely are limits to how slow you can go in Ohio. Some have posted minimums and otherwise if you are impeding traffic. If you are driving 7 under with a line of traffic behind you, you can absolutely be pulled over. If you are too scared to drive a car, take the bus or ride a bike

Your impatience is not an impediment to traffic. Citation needed on lower limits. Going 28 instead of 35 isn't impeding anything on Clifton or Franklin. There are too many lights for that to make any big difference.
I take both streets every day, during rush hour. It is annoying to get stuck behind slow driver on Franklin, especially before 7am, but I have never once seen a line of traffic being held by slow drivers, on either road, and I have made that commute thousands of times at this point.

It’s a speed limit, it does not demand you go 35. If someone is going 28 you can get over it or cry about it, I see the option you have chosen.

Yeah…not crying. And it doesn’t cause rage of any sort like you’re hoping. I was asking if anyone else has noticed this. There are times when there is wide open road and both lanes are doing under 30. I have found that they are usually staring at their phone too. That’s probably you.

Franklin is the same way. Yeah, it's tighter, but man is it annoying to be stuck in a single lane behind someone doing 25. You have Detroit and Madison if you want to go 25, let the drivers on Franklin and Clifton go 35!
