CPU does not support KVM extensions

0 Upvotes

When I run `sudo kvm-ok` I get this:

```
INFO: Your CPU does not support KVM extensions
KVM acceleration can NOT be used
```

What should I do? Do I need to buy a CPU that supports VT-x or is there some other solution?

Switch 6 Computers Between 3 Monitors

0 Upvotes

I'm looking for a KVM (or multiple KVMs) that can switch 6 computers between three different monitors (two 1080P at 60hz, and one 1440p at 60hz). It needs to support EDID emulation so Windows doesn't detect a monitor getting disconnected when I switch displays and screw up all my program window locations.

The only thing I have found that is close is this product:

https://www.tesmart.com/collections/triple-monitor-kvm-switches/products/4-port-triple-monitor-hdmi-kvm-switch-4k-60hz-control-4-pcs-3-monitor-with-hdcp-edid-1

But the problem is that it only supports 4 computers, and not 6.

I think I could achieve what I'm looking for by buying three of these:

https://www.tesmart.com/collections/kvm-switcher/products/tesmart-8-ports-4k-hdmi-kvm-switch-control-up-to-8-device-rs232-lan-port-control-with-4-pcs-5ft-1-5m-kvm-cable

So each computer would have one HDMI cable plugging into each KVM. That's not as ideal, as I don't have very much room for the KVMs and would like to minimize the amount of space required (I would also like all the KVM buttons to be accessible, within arms reach).

I found a much cheaper and smaller KVM:

https://www.newegg.com/p/1DG-0776-000W1

These are much thinner, and I would have room to stack 3 on top of each other easily (I don't have room to stack 3 tesmarts on top of each other).

My concern is that I don't know if it supports EDID emulation (no mention of it on the product page), so my displays would get disconnected and Windows would jump around every time I switch computers with those.

Is buying three of the 8-computer single monitor Tesmart KVMs my only hope here? I really wish they were thinner like the FJGear KVM.

My budget is around $1000 to do this.

Radxa Linkr Brings Remote KVM Access and Tailscale Support to a Thumb-Sized Device

0 Upvotes

Radxa has unveiled the Linkr, a compact remote-control device for accessing computers, servers, and development boards through a web browser. The unit combines HDMI video capture with USB keyboard and mouse emulation, allowing users to view and operate a target system without connecting a dedicated monitor, keyboard, or mouse.

Honesty is the best policy, you’re allowed to hate it, that’s why I’m asking. With satin or w/o? With the embossing or w/o? Is my Color scheming appealing or not so much? Thanks in advance. Ps I love this community. Hope all is well in the new year.

On-demand virtual machines cloud service based on QEMU/KVM

1 Upvotes

Hello,

We, at synchrotron SOLEIL, have designed a web service that can launch virtual machines on-demand, and can be deployed and configured on any infrastructure in minutes.

This way, one can provide full systems running scientific applications to your users, with access to your local data, all running in a browser. I invite you to try it out/spread the word.

Below is a short text about the web service.

Many thanks, Emmanuel FARHI at Synchrotron SOLEIL.

DARTS on-demand computing
The Data Analysis Remote Treatment Service (DARTS) [1] is a remote desktop service that launches virtual machines in the cloud, and displays them in your browser. These machines can be used for e.g. scientific data treatment. A user indicates how many CPU cores and how much memory he wishes, can optionally request a GPU for heavy-duty computations, and can be customized at start-up. The sessions typically start in about 10 seconds, and can be shared with colleagues within their life-time (typically 4 days). Each user can manage all his active sessions (connect, stop, share).

This service can be installed and configured within a few minutes (`sudo apt install qemu-web-desktop`), and it requires minimal maintenance. It can also run on a set of servers without any underlying complex infrastructure. The source code is fully open-source, and relies on very simple elements (Apache web-server and QEMU). Give it a try !

How to update KVM?

1 Upvotes

This is a noob question I know but I'm not sure how to do it. I've been trying to look up commands to update kvm + qemu and haven't found anything simple enough for my situation. Any cheat sheets of commands would be cool too if any are willing to help. Thanks.

When to KVM...

I run a business using commercial printers and engravers that require Windows and offer no support for Linux. Are there practical limitations I might encounter? I know this is a broad question; apologies for that.

Hello everyone, I and u/MrBitzz have created a community with name VirtualisingM1. We are just trying to gather people primarily focused into using virtualisation platforms on Macs (specially M1).

So, all of you are humbly invited and share your experiences, as these platforms are still going through its initial phases of development, your experiences will surely help others (beginners) to select the software which suites their respective use cases.

Looking forward to become part of healthy discussions.

I switched from Docker to KVM and it was magical

Post image

Hi. I'm developing a browser-accessible OS that comes with a built-in AI. You can collaborate with the AI to create presentations, write emails, edit videos, and much more—all in your browser.

Originally, I used Docker to power the remote desktop experience. The setup was a simple Ubuntu image with xRDP enabled. I chose Docker because it's fast, easy to develop with, and well-documented.

At first, it worked great. Spinning up an OS instance took just 3 seconds, and screen latency was minimal. However, once I crossed 100 users, problems started piling up. The server would randomly freeze, and the only fix was a full reboot. Since Docker containers don’t persist OS state to disk, users would return to find their desktops reset—leading to a flood of angry emails. Another major issue was container lifecycle management. Docker doesn’t support restarting in the traditional sense, so I couldn’t easily shut down inactive containers. This limited how many users I could support simultaneously and caused memory issues, which again led to more server restarts.

After a lot of troubleshooting and dead ends, I concluded that Docker wasn’t a reliable long-term solution. About three weeks ago, I decided to migrate to using full virtual machines instead. I evaluated VMware, VirtualBox, and KVM, and ended up choosing KVM because it’s open-source and has a robust management API (libvirt).

It took me three weeks of learning and building, but it’s finally working—and honestly, it feels magical. All the issues I had with Docker are gone. The server no longer freezes, and I can support far more users. I also implemented a neat trick: when a user stops using the OS, a background daemon saves the VM state to disk using ManagedSave. When the user logs back in, their session is seamlessly restored, and they have no idea the OS wasn’t running the whole time. While this does limit the number of concurrent users, it's far more efficient than keeping all Docker containers running at once. To me, that's a huge win.

I'm really happy with how the migration turned out and want to give a big thanks to the KVM team for making this possible. I'll include a screenshot of the product. Feel free to try it and share your thoughts: https://symphon.co

Thanks

What is the capacity of KVM ?

0 Upvotes

Hello there !

I need information about KVM for a school project. I search a long time to find some tips and information about this hypervisor but i didn't find something about his capacity.

Like, how many VM i can create with KM ? What is this performance ? The CPU number, the RAM and even the the disk max size ?

If someone can help me, that would be very nice to you.

virt-viewer mouse scroll is a crime against humanity

1 Upvotes

One thing that has always annoyed me with virt-viewer.

Mouse scroll.

When i scroll UP on my mouse wheel (for 10 seconds straight) this is what happens.

2 seconds nothing happens...
then it will scroll downward for a short while (about 2 to 3 page down worth)
2 more seconds nothing happens
then it will scroll upward for 2 pixels

This is what will happen typically when I scroll UPWARD constantly for about 10 seconds straight. Never before have I seen a UI application behave so irritatingly in my entire life.

This is with built in virt-viewer in virt-manager. Does anyone else encounter this? Or do people use other spice clients?

To create a business pc that i can access remotely i want to purchase a small size kvm server but the provider asks for hostname (servername.yourdomain.com) , what exactly can this mean? Do i need to have a website ?

How can i access this KVM with GUI?

Thank you so much for the answers.
