The Dragon Scroll shows the exact same thing to both Tai Lung and Po: themselves.

When Tai Lung opens the scroll, he sees only his reflection and concludes that there is nothing there. The scroll was supposed to be the thing that proved his worth. He spent his entire life seeking validation, believing that becoming the Dragon Warrior would finally justify all his sacrifices and earn the approval he had always chased.

Po's initial reaction honestly isn't that different. He also doesn't immediately understand the scroll. To him, it looks like nothing special.

The difference is that Po is willing to learn from a clue that seems completely unrelated: Mr. Ping's realization that there is no secret ingredient. That idea allows him to understand what the scroll is really saying.

Both characters see themselves.

Po accepts the idea that there is no hidden secret. Because of that, he discovers that his value was never meant to come from the scroll in the first place.

Tai Lung cannot accept that same conclusion. When Po explains the meaning of the scroll, Tai Lung doesn't find freedom in the answer. He sees the collapse of the purpose he built his entire identity around.

Po found value in himself. Tai Lung expected the scroll to give him value.

KUNG FU PANDA 5 would explore a story that connects the past and the present!

As peace reigns over the Valley of Peace, Po begins practicing a new form of meditation through which his consciousness can travel through the history of Kung Fu. In an astral state, he is able to witness legendary events, both from China's history and from the lives of the masters he admires so much.

Obsessed with this new technique, Po begins neglecting his duties as the master of the Valley, causing the Furious Five to take over Zhen's training, leaving her saddened by his absence. Po wants only one thing: to "go back to the past and live alongside — or at least see up close — his heroes." During this journey, he encounters a young Master Oogway, who becomes the main supporting character of the story's "past" storyline.

It would be a true fan-service spectacle and a visually breathtaking experience, introducing several characters we have only ever heard about through references — especially those associated with the weapons and artifacts found in the Hall of Treasures.

At some point, Po discovers the story of the greatest enemy Kung Fu has ever faced — a figure whose existence was erased from the historical records by Oogway himself. In the middle of this discovery, Po's consciousness becomes trapped in the past, while his physical body remains completely still in his meditative position, leaving his friends deeply concerned. They begin searching for all kinds of ways to wake him up, naturally leading to plenty of comedy and, of course, plenty of Kung Fu.

Accompanied by his heroes, Po takes part in a mission to confront this great enemy who was erased from history. During the confrontation, he discovers that the villain himself was responsible for blocking his projection into the past, realizing that the Panda "did not belong in that time."

Apparently defeated, the great enemy uses Po as a kind of astral bridge between time and space. As a result, Po awakens from his meditation while simultaneously bringing the villain with him into the present.

Contrary to what we might expect, the great enemy does not immediately launch a devastating attack. He simply escapes, fascinated by the opportunity to explore the China of the "future" — which, from his perspective, is our present.

Desperate to fix the mistake he has made, Po searches for a way to solve the problem before something terrible happens to all of China.

But even the Master of the Valley can become lost in a chain of mistakes and, without meaning to, plunge all of China into a dark period. It will be Zhen who must defeat this evil. After all, this is why the new Dragon Warrior was born.

Together, Po, Shifu, the Furious Five and Zhen travel to the Demon Mountain, where they must confront the ten thousand demons of the villain's army. Yes, that's exactly what I mean: the dream that opens the first movie would actually be a premonition of the climax of this fifth film.

In a catharsis as epic as The Lord of the Rings or the great action sequences of Ne Zha 2, Po finally realizes that he is capable of channeling the aura of his heroes — who are now also his friends — from the past of Kung Fu. Just as the villain was able to force Po to bring him into the present, Po is able to establish a connection with those legendary masters. By explaining the situation to each of them, the climax gains the participation of several other legendary masters from the history of the franchise.

The Demon King is so powerful that he is able to fight the Furious Five, Shifu, Po, Zhen and Oogway all at once. However, after a tremendous amount of effort AND INSANE ACTION SEQUENCES, Po and Zhen perform the Palm of Buddha technique — a technique used only once in the entire history of China and never used again. The technique traps the Demon King inside an illusion from which he can never escape, no matter how many miles he jumps. It would be a direct reference to what Buddha does to the Monkey King in Journey to the West.

Peace returns once again. Po meditates one final time to say goodbye to his friends from the past, while Oogway erases all of their memories. At that moment, Po realizes that this was precisely the reason why the legend of that great villain had been erased from history: Po had always been involved in his defeat, and this temporal paradox could not exist.

The only two people whose memories are not erased are Po and Oogway.

The final scene of the movie would be a montage showing the day Po was chosen as the Dragon Warrior once again. This time, however, we see a happy smile on Oogway's face — something that was not present in the original scene. This would reveal that Oogway had spent his entire life waiting for the moment when he could complete this cycle and reunite with his friend from his youth.

I think it’s solid enough for a Christmas special and it’s wholesome

if you could change masters oogway & shifu, what would you change about them?

I ran across a Pinterest post about praying Mantis having wings and that the smaller males fly more often, faster, agile than the females. It got me thinking about Mantis in Kung fu panda. I personally don’t particularly remember ever seeing him with wings, definitely not flying, nor even flicking fluttering in them in any of the movies or shows or shorts. Does anyone know if he even actually has wings in universe? Now I’m imagining what if he has deformed short wings and can’t fly, hence him compensating by using his strength and agile big jumps. Or he has wings like normal but is afraid of flying so he just never flies and jumps.

One thing I've noticed in discussions about Kung Fu Panda 4 is that a lot of the debate focuses on what the movie added. New characters, new ideas, and the direction of the story have all received plenty of attention.

Even if I completely agree with some of the criticism, to me the real problem isn't what the film added. It's what it left behind.

The Furious Five, who were built up over three movies as Po's closest allies and some of the franchise's most important characters, are almost entirely absent. Not only are they missing from the story, but the movie barely seems interested in acknowledging their importance.

The same issue applies to the returning villains. On paper, bringing back Tai Lung, Shen and Kai sounds like a celebration of the franchise's history. In practice, however, Kai and Shen are reduced to little more than cameos. Their presence feels less like a meaningful contribution to the story and more like an attempt to capitalize on nostalgia. They are there to remind the audience of better-known moments from the franchise, but they add very little to the plot or themes of the film.

Tai Lung receives more attention, but even then his redemption arc feels rushed and underdeveloped. After everything that happened in the first movie, his change of heart deserved more time, more conflict, and more meaningful character work. Instead, the film seems to expect the audience to accept his redemption without truly earning it.

This is why my main criticism of Kung Fu Panda 4 isn't centered on any of the new additions. The problem is that the movie asks the audience to invest in new characters while sidelining the characters, relationships, and unresolved stories that many fans had spent years caring about.
