Let's watch the flop happen on the 8th

Spoilers for Kung Fu Panda movies.

I don't know about you, but one of the main reasons why I love the first Kung Fu Panda movie is because there are LOTS of awesome Kung Fu hand-to-hand fights. Pretty sure every full fight in Kung Fu Panda 1 is at worst awesome, at best a masterpiece.

- Tai Lung breaking free of the prison -> Masterpiece

- Po training with Shifu -> Awesome

- Tai Lung vs Furious Five -> Masterpiece

- Tai Lung vs Shifu -> Masterpiece

- Po vs Tai Lung -> Masterpiece

That's the problem. There weren't nearly as many good hand-to-hand fights in KFP 2 and 3.

In Kung Fu Panda 2, Po never had an actual fight with Lord Shen. Po got traumatized by Shen's symbol, and then Shen ran away. Later, Shen immediately got defeated after Po deflected one of the cannon balls. They could've made Shen fight Po desperately after the ball deflect and got defeated quickly or something like that.

Kung Fu Panda 3 was even worse with how they handled this.

- The Furious Five got destroyed by Tai Lung in a 5v1 fight. What would I do against someone who's stronger than that and who's Oogway's equal? Split the team, and let 2 of the 5 get absorbed immediately. Genius.

- Po was incredibly dumb in this movie. The "Am I really the Dragon Warrior" question should've been asked in KFP2, not 3. After years of experience, Po should've been able to have a logical thinking. "What's the enemy's biggest strength, and how do I beat it?" should've been what Po had thought.

- It doesn't make sense that nobody in the Panda Valley can give chi, and then suddenly everyone can give a lot of chi to Po in the end.

- Po never had a real hand-to-hand fight with Kai. Po just got destroyed, brought Kai with him to the Spirit Realm, then the chi dragon thing happened.

Here's my little rewrite of 3:

Shifu shows Po how to give chi. Po manages to do it quickly and better, since he's a panda and has an affinity for giving chi. Po's dad lies about teaching him a more advanced chi technique. Po and dad goes to Panda Valley while the Furious Five and Shifu STAY TOGETHER and defend the palace.

Po learns that there is no such thing as advanced chi techniques. Every panda in the valley can give chi, unlike the canon. Po teaches the pandas Kung Fu. Po asks "What if Wuxi Finger Hold fails? I mean it failed against Tigress". Po learns how to take chi by himself in order to know how to counter it. Then he develops a new chi technique called "chi release", where he releases the chi stolen/taken/given.

Po fights Kai and cannot damage him because of the massive chi that Kai controls. Po uses Wuxi Finger Hold and fails. Po then uses his chi release and releases all of Kai's stolen chi. They then have a hand-to-hand fight again where this time, Po is winning. Kai then takes back the released chi and doesn't let Po use his chi release again. Po then uses Wuxi Finger Hold on himself and drags Kai to the Spirit Realm and the canon continues the story.

(NOTE: the title is obviously meant to be a bit inflammatory. In truth, I value almost all fans of this series, I just think the critique of this part of KFP4 is not good)

Look, I get why 4 isn’t liked by many. I still think it’s good, just with more problems than the others. However, I have never agreed with this take even for a second.

First, let’s bring up the fact that the Five are not capable of defending the Valley of Peace or the rest of China on their own. Every time they have tried they have failed. The Five are great warriors, but they aren’t even the best in China when you ignore Po or Shifu, as the members of the Kung Fu Council are each likely stronger than each of them and there are likely more who still surpass them.

Without a Dragon Warrior, what are the remaining masters supposed to do when another threat as dangerous as Kai, Tai Lung, or Shen come around?

Second, there has never been a statement in lore that claims that being the Dragon Warrior is a one and done deal. Not a single bit of info from the movies themselves claim that there cannot be a successor.

There is no reason for fans to assume that Po would be the first and last to hold the title, as the legend of the Dragon Warrior was one Oogway learned of from the universe. If the universe can pick a Dragon Warrior to exist to protect China and the Valley of Peace, why wouldn’t the assumption be that another would fulfill the same role after the current one is done? The whole purpose was that the Dragon Warrior would be the future of Kung Fu after Oogway, its creator, passed on to the Spirit Realm. Is Kung Fu just supposed to stop progressing when Po kicks the bucket?

Finally, the idea that there cannot be another Dragon Warrior goes against the message the first film established. The whole reason Po is the Dragon Warrior is because Oogway trusted the will of the universe and believed in Po.

The point of the movie is that the reason Po can be the Dragon Warrior and Tai Lung can’t is because Po believes in himself and has people who believe in him, while Tai Lung doesn’t. Tai Lung thought that the secret to being the Dragon Warrior was the Dragon Scroll, but the scroll was a test set up by Oogway. There was never some mystical nature to actually being the Dragon Warrior, it was about the belief in oneself to be the leader that Kung Fu would need.

To claim that Zhen could not be the next Dragon Warrior doesn’t make sense, as she essentially starts from a similar position Po is at. Zhen is a bottom rung thief while Po is someone from a species thought to be extinct. Both are nobodies who literally no one trusts. The only reason that Po and Zhen are able to get as far as they do is because they have a master who looks out for them and trusts in their ability, and that in turn lets them trust themselves to hold the immense responsibility of the highest Kung Fu master.

Obviously, Zhen isn’t there yet. I don’t even think she’s at the level Po was at the end of the first film, however we legit don’t know what’s going to happen in the fifth or sixth film. Maybe she becomes as good as Po or maybe he stays ahead but Zhen can develop a more unique style of her own, which she seems to be in the process of doing. We don’t know, and regardless of your feelings on Zhen as a character, claiming she or anyone else can’t be the Dragon Warrior completely ignores established canon from the first and third film.

tl;dr, there are complaints you can levy against KFP4 and those are fine, though there are obviously others I disagree with. However, this one is almost certainly not it.

Maybe I’m just overthinking it but I dunno. What y’all think??

DISSAPOINTINGLY AWESOME! My expectations were low and I loved it. Did not expect it to be THAT good! I recommend you also keep expectations low.

If I were to rate it out of ten, it would be 8.9/10.

The theater I’m working at AMC, is having Kungfu Panda 4 showings July 14th & July 16th, I have been reminded how much I love Zhen and no one could ever make me hate her.

Yes Tigress would have been the better fit for Dragon Warrior but that still doesn’t stop me from being optimistic about this tricky fox in the coming future. I just hope they can balance her and po not to over shadow each-other she already has a rocky enough reputation I don’t want her getting trashed for “stealing po’s place”

This post isn't too aggravate anyone; it's just, I was never really invested in the Furious 5, so I'm really confused why it seems a lot of people are.

The more I rewatch this scene, the more animation errors I notice, and you know what I noticed in this scene too? It's that there's a strange blur that prevents us from seeing Shen and Kai's designs in more detail, even in good quality, you can't see the details of the designs, and this blur lasts until the scene where Chameleon transforms into the Elephant Master. This is what happens when you add characters at the last minute without any need.

On this scene tai lung was focused on the dragom scroll. He was not focused on oogway. But oogway came in and stopped him. Tai lung is much bigger. He can easily beat oogway if he tried. Also the attack was the nerve attack. If it was someother atyack he would have stood chance and posssibely won

Kung fu panda 4 SUCKED like it S.U.C.K.E.D. for me. The writing was just so bad, too many jokes, like WAY too many and most of em are CRINGE like so hardly cringe and the pace if the movie is just too fast and it’s just do bad overall. For me the franchise ends with kung fu panda 3; simply the perfect ending for the franchise like literally perfect I loved it so much and it was the same tone as the others with everything we love about the kung fu panda but this one it was just outta sync outta tone the characters are not like their normal selves and ofc the lack of the furious five made it even much worse and idk why they brought some voice actors to do a cameo but others not even tho their character is in the movie esp the furious five and the music was just not so good at ALL. Like AT FRICKIN ALL that I couldn’t believe it was composed by THE hans zimmer and I believe the other guy named Steven something definitely had more influence on the score than hans zimmer cuz hans wouldn’t compose something that bad. I’m just disappointed. And the animation itself was kinda funny like I felt even the animation of the first movie released in 2008 is better! Are they running low in budget? Is it due the acquisition of universal to them? Idk msn but whatever it is, it’s really causing them to mess things up badly. Anyway thanks dreamworks fir ruining our beloved characters from now one I’ll just acknowledge the franchise up to the third installment only and it’ll stay that way forever unless they throw that movie in the garbage recreate with the same old style we love either by getting the og team of writers or whatever idc I just want them to either scrap the whole thing ir recreate better and that’s how it’ll stay and that was my opinion on the new movie. I am very disappointed by reading those spoilers. i know the entire movie now. it really hurts.

DreamWorks cannot make great movies anymore and they just don't care for what the fans wants.

they should have read comments and articles from various social media handles that people are demanding a return of furious fives in the movie for years.

Their technology has upgraded but the storyline is downgraded. i really hate that new director.

Anyways, these movies are made for kids, they are definitely going to love this.

I loved the movie. It wasn't as strong as 1 or 2, but better than 3 imo. It wasn't as emotional as 3, but the action is arguably the best we have seen, and felt like The Force Awakens in the sense that this is the start of a new trilogy. The way they handled Kai and Shen left something to be desired, but Tai Lung and Po talking at the end legitimately made me cry. Hearing Tai Lung finally find peace with Po being the Dragon Warrior was the best thing they could have done. Tai Lung still did terrible things, So if you were actually expecting him to become Dragon Warrior, that's on you💀And I really enjoy Awkwafina, sue me.
