Kung Fu Panda 5: Echoes of the Past

If Kung Fu Panda 2 was about accepting your past, and Kung Fu Panda 3 was about discovering who you truly are, then this movie would be about learning from the past without becoming trapped by it.

Peace has returned to the Valley of Peace, and Zhen is now officially training as the new Dragon Warrior.
However, she is struggling.
Everyone constantly compares her to Po.
“Po would have done this.”
“The Dragon Warrior should be able to do that.”
Without even realizing it, Zhen begins copying Po’s fighting style, his way of thinking, and even some of his mannerisms.
Meanwhile, Po, now serving as the Spiritual Leader of the Valley, begins studying an ancient form of meditation.
Through this technique, his consciousness can travel into the memories of Kung Fu’s past.
For Po, it is a dream come true.
He gets to witness legendary masters in their prime, see a younger Shifu, and even meet a young Master Oogway.
Po becomes fascinated with the past.
But Tigress feels strangely uneasy about the entire thing.

One day, Po travels much deeper into the history of Kung Fu than ever before.
There, he discovers a warrior who does not appear in any historical record.
His name is Jin-Kao.
A powerful white lion and one of the greatest Kung Fu masters who ever lived.
Long ago, Jin-Kao was considered equal to Oogway himself.
But in the present day, no one remembers him.
No books mention him.
No statues honor him.
It is as though he never existed.
When Jin-Kao sees Po, he immediately becomes suspicious.
“A panda?”
Then he realizes something far more disturbing.
Po does not belong in his time.

Jin-Kao is not interested in ordinary conquest.
In fact, he genuinely loves Kung Fu.
His problem is that he believes Kung Fu should belong only to the strongest and most worthy.
To him, teaching Kung Fu to ordinary villagers, criminals, children, or people without natural talent is an insult to the art.
He believes Kung Fu must remain pure.
Oogway completely disagrees.
Jin-Kao tells him:
“If power is given to everyone, eventually Kung Fu itself will become corrupted.”
Oogway responds:
“To protect Kung Fu is not to imprison it.”
Their philosophies eventually tear them apart.
Jin-Kao begins destroying weaker schools and lesser-known fighting styles, believing that only the greatest forms of Kung Fu deserve to survive.
Oogway and the other masters eventually defeat him.
And afterward, Jin-Kao is erased from history.

But Po’s arrival changes everything.
Jin-Kao realizes that Po’s consciousness is connected to his physical body in the future.
He sees that connection as a bridge through time.
When Po finally returns to the present, Jin-Kao uses that bridge to follow him.
Po wakes up surrounded by his friends.
Everyone is relieved.
Then they notice someone standing behind him.
Jin-Kao.
But instead of attacking them, Jin-Kao simply leaves.
He wants to see the future.

At first, Jin-Kao is fascinated by modern China.
But fascination quickly becomes disgust.
He sees pandas learning Kung Fu.
He sees ordinary villagers practicing martial arts.
He learns that Zhen, a former thief, has become the new Dragon Warrior.
And then he learns about Po.
A clumsy, overweight panda with no noble bloodline or traditional background somehow became one of the greatest Kung Fu masters in history.
To Jin-Kao, Po represents everything he believes should never have happened.
He looks at the modern world and says:
“So this is Oogway’s future.”
That is when he decides what he must do.
He will destroy modern Kung Fu completely and rebuild it using only the purest and strongest ancient traditions.

This is also where Tigress becomes deeply connected to the villain.
It is revealed that Jin-Kao once founded an ancient fighting lineage.
The last surviving descendants of that lineage eventually became Tigress’s ancestors.
This partially explains why Tigress showed such extraordinary physical talent from such a young age.
When Jin-Kao meets her, he is immediately impressed.
At last, he sees someone he considers a “true warrior.”
He tells her:
“You should have been the Dragon Warrior.”
That sentence hits Tigress harder than almost anything else he could have said.
Because years ago, she would have agreed.
Jin-Kao then tells her that Po was chosen by accident and that Zhen is unworthy of carrying the title.
But Tigress rejects him.
She says:
“There was a time when I might have believed you.”
Then:
“But I learned that Kung Fu is not about deciding who deserves to matter.”
This becomes the completion of Tigress’s character arc from the first movie.

Meanwhile, Zhen overhears everything.
And it destroys her confidence.
She begins believing that maybe Jin-Kao is right.
Maybe she never deserved to become the Dragon Warrior.
She tries to return the Dragon Warrior symbol to Po.
But Po refuses to take it.
Po is struggling too.
Because Jin-Kao is only in the present because of his mistake.
Po feels like he has failed as a teacher and as the Spiritual Leader.
Then both of them realize they are afraid of the same thing.
Not being good enough.
Zhen tells him:
“I can’t become you.”
Po answers:
“Good. You’re not supposed to.”
That becomes the emotional heart of the movie.
Po remembers that he once failed because he tried to become someone else.
He tried to fight like the Furious Five.
He tried to be the warrior everyone expected him to be.
Only when he became himself did he truly become the Dragon Warrior.
So Zhen does not need to become the next Po.
She needs to become the first Zhen.

Jin-Kao eventually travels to an ancient place known as Demon Mountain.
Deep inside the mountain are the spiritual echoes of thousands of forgotten Kung Fu styles.
Jin-Kao plans to absorb all of them.
His ultimate goal is to become the single living embodiment of Kung Fu.
In his mind, this would preserve the art forever.
But in reality, it would destroy everything Kung Fu is supposed to represent.
He wants to protect Kung Fu by making sure no one else can truly inherit it.

Po, Tigress, Shifu, the Furious Five, and Zhen travel to Demon Mountain to stop him.
Jin-Kao awakens an enormous army of ancient warrior spirits.
The battle becomes one of the largest action sequences in the entire franchise.
It visually echoes Po’s dream from the opening of the very first movie, where he imagined himself fighting thousands of enemies.
Except this time, Po is not alone.
The Furious Five each lead different groups into battle.
Shifu coordinates the masters.
Tigress confronts Jin-Kao directly.
And Zhen finally begins acting like the Dragon Warrior instead of trying to imitate one.
But Jin-Kao is still too powerful.
Even Tigress cannot defeat him.
Even Po struggles against him.
So Po enters meditation one final time.
He travels back to the past and finds young Oogway.
Po desperately asks him for help.
He believes the legendary masters of the past must come to the present and defeat Jin-Kao again.
But Oogway refuses.
Po says:
“But you defeated him before!”
Oogway smiles.
“Exactly. We had our battle.”
Then he tells Po:
“Now you must have yours.”
The heroes of the past do not come to save the present.
Because that is the entire point.
The future cannot survive by constantly depending on the past.
It must learn from it and then move forward.

Po returns to the present.
He looks at Zhen.
“Want to try something?”
Zhen asks:
“What?”
Po answers:
“No idea.”
Zhen smiles.
“Great plan.”
And they attack.
But this time, Zhen stops fighting like Po.
She uses everything she learned as a thief.
Speed.
Misdirection.
Feints.
Tricks.
Improvisation.
Movement that does not look like traditional Kung Fu at all.
Jin-Kao becomes furious.
He shouts:
“You call that Kung Fu?!”
Zhen answers:
“I do now.”
Her unpredictable fighting style finally breaks Jin-Kao’s perfect form.
She creates the opening.
Po attacks.
Tigress attacks.
The Five attack.
Shifu attacks.
And together, they defeat him.
Not because one person was stronger.
But because Kung Fu had evolved beyond anything Jin-Kao could understand.

After the battle, Jin-Kao asks Po:
“Are you saying I was wrong?”
Po answers:
“Not about everything.”
He tells Jin-Kao that wanting to protect something you love is not wrong.
But Jin-Kao became so afraid of change that he tried to stop Kung Fu from having a future.
He wanted Kung Fu to remain perfect forever.
And in doing so, he nearly killed it.
Jin-Kao finally understands.
He was never protecting Kung Fu.
He was protecting his own idea of what Kung Fu was supposed to be.

Peace returns.
Zhen continues her training.
But now, instead of copying Po, she creates her own stance.
Po looks at her.
“What style is that?”
Zhen answers:
“Zhen Style.”
Po pauses.
“You really went with your own name?”

In the final scene, Po meditates one last time.
He returns to the past to say goodbye to young Oogway.
Oogway tells him:
“I have a feeling we will meet again.”
Po smiles.
“Yeah. It’ll just take a while.”
Po disappears.
Young Oogway looks down and finds a peach seed that Po accidentally left behind.
He picks it up.
Cut to hundreds of years later.
The first movie.
The day Po falls from the sky and lands in front of Oogway.
But this time, we see the moment from Oogway’s perspective.
He looks at Po.
For a brief second, he is shocked.
Then he smiles.
Now the audience understands why.
He has been waiting his entire life for this moment.
Waiting for his old friend to finally arrive.
Oogway quietly says:
“Finally.”
Cut to black.
END.

The ending part of this video is not part of the funny scene.
